Investigating the effect of shielding gas flow on the welding process of laser-arc hybrid welding (LAHW) and metal inert-gas welding (MIG).

The process stability of MIG under high gas flow rate is poorer than that of LAHW. The force of gas flow Fg can hinder the droplet transfer, whether MIG or LAHW. But the vaporization-induced recoil force Fv in LAHW helps to reduce this kind of hindrance and keep the process stability. The shielded gas flow mode in the main welding area cannot be changed significantly by increasing the shielding gas flow rate, while high gas flow rate can increase the area of high argon concentration and benefit the spread of molten metal.

1:Experimental Design and Method Selection
The study used computational fluid dynamics analysis (CFD) and high-speed photography to investigate the influence of shielding gas on the welding process of LAHW and MIG.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources
The material used was 6 mm thick 6N01 aluminum and the filler metal was ER5356 with the 1.2 mm diameter. The chemical compositions of the base metal and welding wire were provided.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials
The LAHW system was composed of an IPG YLS-4000 fiber laser, a KEMPPI KempArc-450 pulse welding machine and an ABB IRB-2600 industrial robot. A Photron FASTCAM SA4 high-speed camera was used to observe the welding process.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow
The welding parameters of LAHW and MIG were given. The CFD analysis for the zone of red circle was carried out. The high-speed camera was used to observe the welding process, and a NI DAQ system was used to acquire the voltage and current of welding process.
5:Data Analysis Methods
The microscopic morphology was observed by a Carl Zeiss Stemi 2000-C stereomicroscope. The CFD analysis was calculated by ANSYS R18.0 software.
