1. The laser power and welding speed strongly affects the joint geometry, while the effect of defocusing distance on joint geometry is not significant. 2. The optimized underwater laser weld can be obtained with the laser power of 2.0 kW, the welding speed of 2.0 m/min and the defocusing distance of 1 mm. 3. The ferrite of the underwater weld is lathy ferrite and dendritic ferrite while that of in-air weld is dendritic ferrite, attributed to the rapid cooling rate.
