Plasmonic enhancement for photocatalytic water splitting has been reported with moderate improvement. Noble metals and semiconductors like TiO2 and α-Fe2O3 have been widely studied. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms fully and to achieve practical application through cost reduction and scale-up of plasmonic photocatalyst fabrication.

The enhancement factors reported are not as high as expected, and the mechanisms underlying the enhancement are still not fully understood. Further studies are needed to achieve much higher efficiency.
