To demonstrate the realization of short-period quasi-phase matching (QPM) structures in lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) thin-film substrates for efficient second-harmonic generation (SHG).

The successful fabrication and optimization of periodically poled LNOI with micrometer-range poling periods were presented, which is used for the fabrication of periodically poled ridge waveguides. Such PPLNOI waveguides with short poling periods will enable efficient backward SHG and further enhance the prospects of LNOI as a versatile platform for nanoscale integrated nonlinear optics.

The study is limited to LNOI thin-film substrates with a thickness of 600 nm and focuses on achieving periodic poling with periods down to 1 μm. The method's effectiveness for other materials or different thicknesses is not explored.
