The proposed intelligent 2D soft decision method, enabled by k-means clustering, significantly improves the performance of VCSEL-based 112-Gbps PAM-4 and PAM-8 optical interconnections by mitigating level nonlinearity, level-dependent noise, and ISI without the need for training using prior-known sequences. Both simulations and experiments confirm the effectiveness of the method.

The study is limited by the constraints of VCSEL's thermal characteristics and the bandwidth limitations of MMF, which may affect the performance of high-speed optical interconnections. Additionally, the k-means clustering accuracy may be compromised in very noisy conditions.
