The encoded FBG can be used as an optical fiber tag to distinguish data transmission cables. Encoded information can be acquired from the backscattered optical signal in the fiber, and the local spectrum of the internal grating fragments can be used to enlarge the encoding capacity or encrypt the encoded FBG.
