To design and fabricate a novel color photodetector (PD) for the further integration of receivers in multi-color visible light communication systems using a 40 nm standard CMOS process without any process modifications.

The work demonstrates the feasibility of fabricating color PDs by using standard CMOS technology and will promote the integration of multi-color VLC systems. The color PDs exhibit wavelength selectivity in the visible range with maximum peaks at 660 nm (red), 585 nm (green) and 465 nm (blue), respectively, and the added 2D polysilicon grating has little effect on the responsivities of the photodiodes.

The spectral response of the color PD is affected by the spectral response of the photodiode besides that of the grating, which may result in a multiple peak response spectrum or an unwanted PD spectral response maximum peak wavelength.
