To develop a high-throughput and multi-elemental analysis system for single particles using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) combined with bright-field microscopy.

The developed SPLIBS system allows for high-throughput and multi-elemental analysis of single particles with minimal sample preparation. It is capable of studying heterogeneity in particles’ compositions and discriminating particles with similar chemicals, making it a promising tool for environmental risk assessment.

The spatial resolution of the bright-field microscopy limited the particle size to above 3 μm. Smaller particles could be analyzed with a higher NA focal lens.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
The system combines bright-field microscopy for particle identification and LIBS spectroscopy for multi-elemental quantification. Particles were immobilized in ultra-thin polyethylene films to avoid spectral interference and quenching of plasma emissions.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
Particles of copper sulfate, fine sand, and grounded coal cinder with sizes ranging from 3 to 50 μm were used.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
A home-made microscope with a LED flashlight, a Nd:YAG laser for LIBS, polyethylene films for particle immobilization, and a spectrometer (LIBS2500Plus, Ocean Optics, Inc.) for spectrum recording.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
Particles were embedded in polyethylene films, identified under bright-field microscopy, and then targeted by a focused laser for LIBS analysis. The plasma emissions were collected and analyzed.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
Both univariate and multivariate analysis (PCA and SVM) were used for particle discrimination.
