To develop a methodology for the evaluation of the potential of Mg alloys for laser-based additive manufacturing and to explore the possibility of additively manufacturing Mg alloys.

The melt pools of the EV31 alloy produced by laser surface remelting exhibit uniformly distributed ?ne grains without cracking. Remarkable grain re?nement can be achieved with the applied energy density of 75 J/mm2 and 125 J/mm2. The constitutional supercooling caused by the soluble Zr is most likely the dominant mechanism for grain re?nement of EV31 alloy.

The study focuses on a specific Mg alloy (EV31) and the effects of laser surface remelting. The applicability of the findings to other Mg alloys or manufacturing processes is not explored.
