Investigating the plasmon enhanced ablation for elemental analysis and understanding the mechanisms leading to signal enhancement during nanoparticle enhanced laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (NELIBS).

The plasmonic nature of the signal enhancement during NELIBS has been proven experimentally. The study provides new insights into the reasons leading to NELIBS enhancement, including the correlation between the NELIBS enhancement and the electromagnetic field enhancement, and the negligible difference in the ablated mass with respect to differences in emission intensity with and without plasmon enhanced ablation.

The study focuses on noble metal NPs deposited on metal samples, and the mechanisms of plasmon enhanced ablation are not fully elucidated. The efficiency of plasmon enhanced laser ablation strongly depends on the quality of the NPs deposition on the sample surface.
