研究目的
Investigating the single-electron tunneling in electron energy spectra of diamond tip field emitter due to the Coulomb blockade effect.
研究成果
The behavior observed could be explained by the CB effect occurring during FE in the nanoscale carbon cluster formed on the surface of the diamond tip. This makes the studied systems interesting both for new physics, combining single-electron tunneling with field emission, and for possible technological applications for creation of intense and coherent single-electron sources.
研究不足
The current steps in CV curves could be caused not only by CB, but also due to other reasons related to size-quantization effects.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
Field emission from microscale diamond tips was studied using electron energy spectroscopy. High emission currents were applied to modify the atomic surface structure of pristine diamond tips.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
Diamond tip field emitters were produced by selective oxidation of polycrystalline CVD diamond films.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
Diamond needles, tungsten tip holders, dual beam focused ion beam / scanning electron microscope (FIB/SEM), micro-positioner, contact deposition system, UHV system equipped with an electron energy spectrometer.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
FE was observed from the apex of a needle using an UHV system equipped with an electron energy spectrometer. The FE current and electron energy spectra were measured simultaneously as a function of the applied voltage.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
The measured spectra were used to determine the parameters of the Coulomb blockade (e.g. charging energy) and reveal peculiar features of single-electron effects in field emission systems.
