To prepare highly-oriented (104) polycrystalline α-Al2O3 transparent ceramics by a templated grain growth (TGG) method using A-plane single-crystal sapphire as the template, and to investigate their optical properties.

Highly-oriented (104) polycrystalline α-Al2O3 transparent ceramics with high optical transparency were successfully prepared using the TGG method. The oriented samples showed significantly higher real in-line transmittance compared to random samples, especially in the UV range. This method has potential applications in producing polycrystalline ceramics with excellent optical transparency from other uniaxial materials without optical axes.
