研究目的
To evaluate the effects of age, race, and ethnicity on the optic nerve and peripapillary retina using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) three-dimensional (3D) volume scans in normal subjects.
研究成果
All parameters exhibited age-related declines. RNFL, MDB thickness, and MDB area demonstrated racial and ethnic variations, while peripapillary RT and RV did not. The study underscores the importance of factoring in age-related changes and ethnic variations in glaucoma management.
研究不足
1. Cross-sectional study design may introduce individual variability and sampling bias. 2. Uneven distribution of races and ethnicities, with predominantly whites. 3. Categorization of the Asian population may not account for genetic heterogeneity. 4. Recruitment from a university-based glaucoma clinic may not represent the general population.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
A cross-sectional study design was employed to evaluate the effects of age, race, and ethnicity on the optic nerve and peripapillary retina using SD-OCT 3D volume scans.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
272 normal subjects were recruited, including 175 whites, 40 blacks, 40 Asians, and 17 Hispanics. All subjects received RNFL scans and an optic nerve 3D volume scan.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
Spectralis HRA-OCT (Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany) was used for SD-OCT imaging. Custom-designed software was used for calculating neuroretinal rim MDB thickness and area.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
Subjects underwent comprehensive eye examinations, including SD-OCT imaging. The SD-OCT software calculated peripapillary RNFL thickness, RT, and RV. Custom-designed software calculated MDB thickness and area.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
Statistical analyses were performed using SAS 9.4 and R 3.2.3. Descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and multivariate analysis were used to analyze the effects of age, race, and ethnicity on OCT parameters.
