These compounds are thermally stable and show potential for use as luminescent materials. The energy of excited triplet states of ligand anions was determined, influencing the luminescence intensity of the complexes.

The synthesis process can be slow due to the large thickness of the membrane and low rate of diffusion of lanthanides in mercury. The use of ultrasound to prevent passivation may warm the reaction mixture, potentially leading to undesirable side reactions.
