研究目的
To investigate the linear dependence of absorbance on concentration as assumed by Beer’s law and to derive Beer’s law from dispersion theory, showing that absorbance is only approximately proportional to concentration even in the absence of chemical interactions and instrumental errors.
研究成果
The study establishes a connection between Maxwell’s equations, dispersion relations, and Beer’s law, deriving the latter from the former using an approximation by Lorentz. It shows that while Beer’s law is a good approximation for weak oscillators and low concentrations, deviations occur for stronger oscillators and higher concentrations due to the non-additive nature of absorbance.
研究不足
The study is theoretical and does not involve experimental validation. The approximations used may not hold for all materials, especially those with strong oscillators or at high concentrations.
