The work demonstrates that PT symmetry in photonic crystal defect waveguides can lead to protected defect modes and the emergence of edge modes in the complex conjugate frequency regime in one design, and thresholdless PT transitions in another design. These findings offer novel mechanisms for chip-scale light sources and amplifiers.

The study uses exotic values of complex refractive index (nr = 1.0) for the gain and loss rods, which are not commonly available in experimental materials. The conclusions are expected to be extended to experimentally available materials in future studies.
