研究目的
To compare aerosol single-scattering albedo (SSA) retrievals from AERONET CIMEL Sun-sky radiometers with in situ aircraft measurements from the LARGE team during the DRAGON-MD and DISCOVER-AQ experiments, and to assess the accuracy and trends of SSA with aerosol optical depth.
研究成果
The mean agreement between AERONET and LARGE SSA measurements was excellent, with differences within stated accuracies. SSA increases with AOD, likely due to factors like hygroscopic growth and changes in aerosol composition. Long-term data from multiple sites show consistent trends, indicating regional variations in aerosol properties.
研究不足
Challenges include ensuring temporal and spatial coincidence, cloud-free conditions for AERONET retrievals, and the need for high aerosol loading for sensitivity. Uncertainties in absorption measurements and potential differences due to humidity effects are noted.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
The study involved comparing column-effective SSA from AERONET retrievals with in situ SSA from aircraft profiles. AERONET data were obtained using CIMEL Sun-sky radiometers, and LARGE data from aircraft instruments including nephelometers and PSAPs. Coincident measurements were made within ±45 minutes and at collocated sites.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
Data were collected during the summer of 2011 from multiple sites in the Baltimore-Washington region, including MDE air quality monitoring sites. Only Level 2 AERONET data (AOD ≥ 0.4 at 440 nm) were used initially, with additional analysis for AOD ≥ 0.
3:4 at 440 nm) were used initially, with additional analysis for AOD ≥ List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
2.
3. List of Experimental Equipment and Materials: CIMEL Sun-sky radiometers (with specific wavelengths), TSI-3563 integrating nephelometer, Radiance Research PSAP, NASA P-3B aircraft.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
Aircraft performed vertical profiles with spirals, measuring scattering and absorption coefficients. AERONET conducted almucantar scans. Data were weighted by aerosol loading for column averages.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
SSA was calculated using equation (1). Differences were analyzed statistically, and trends with AOD were evaluated using binning and modeling approaches.
