研究目的
To determine whether a smartphone adaptor can record laryngoscopic videos of adequate quality for clinical diagnosis and communication among otolaryngologists and assess the impact of recorded exams on patient satisfaction.
研究成果
Smartphone adaptors produce high-quality laryngoscopy videos sufficient for clinical assessment in most cases, though eyepiece is superior for subtle findings. The technology improves patient satisfaction and clinician communication but requires attention to privacy and HIPAA compliance.
研究不足
Sample size was adequate but larger could confirm absence of subsite visualization variation; Likert scale not specifically validated for display quality; results may differ based on pathology; potential privacy issues with smartphone use; study did not assess specific diagnoses or impact on patient care, cost, and workflow.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
A prospective case series study was conducted with institutional review board approval. Flexible laryngoscopy was performed using two visualization techniques: direct eyepiece and smartphone adaptor with video recording. A 5-point Likert scale was used for grading optical quality and patient satisfaction.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
Twenty adult inpatients requiring flexible laryngoscopy were enrolled from a tertiary care medical center. Inclusion criteria: age ≥18 years, indication for diagnostic fiberoptic laryngoscopy. Exclusion criteria: emergent consultations or uncooperative patients.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
Dedicated iPhone 5S smartphones (Apple Inc.), MobileOptx smartphone adaptor (MobileOptx, Philadelphia, PA), flexible laryngoscope.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
After informed consent, laryngoscopy was performed with the adaptor attached, setup time recorded, followed by eyepiece exam. Patients viewed the video and completed a satisfaction survey. Operators and an offsite reviewer graded optical quality and subsite visualization.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
Descriptive statistics for demographics and nominal data; Mann-Whitney U-test for ordinal data analysis.
