To investigate the transformation of strontium hexaferrites from excellent photocatalysts to outstanding adsorbents via the inclusion of Mn3+ into the lattice for environmental remediation of organic pollutants.

Manganese doped strontium hexaferrites are highly efficient for the removal of organic pollutants, with SrMn2Fe10O19 being the most active photocatalyst and SrMn5Fe7O19 showing outstanding adsorption capabilities. The incorporation of Mn3+ enhances catalytic performance due to its preference for surface-exposed octahedral sites, and the materials exhibit excellent stability and reusability, making them promising for environmental remediation applications.

The adsorption behavior was selective and observed only at pH 2.5, limiting its applicability to other pH conditions. The formation of Fe2O3 as a second phase in some samples due to high Fe3+ content may affect purity. The decrease in photocatalytic efficiency for PNP with high Mn content (x>2.0) indicates limitations in electron transfer mechanisms.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
Manganese substituted strontium hexaferrites (SrMnxFe12-xO19) were synthesized using chemical co-precipitation method. The synthesized materials were characterized using various techniques including FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, BET surface area analysis, VSM, UV-vis DRS, and XPS. The photocatalytic and adsorption performances were evaluated for the degradation and removal of model pollutants (MO, RDR, PNP) under visible light irradiation using photo-Fenton process.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
Metal salts (Sr(NO3)2, Fe(NO3)3·9H2O, MnCl2·4H2O) and pollutants (MO, RDR, PNP) were obtained from commercial suppliers. Samples were synthesized with varying Mn content (x=0.0 to 5.0).

List of Experimental Equipment and Materials: Equipment included FT-IR spectrometer (Nicolet iS50), X-ray diffractometer (Panalytical’s X’Pert Pro), FE-SEM (Hitachi-SU8010), HR-TEM (FEI Tecnai G2 F20), BET surface area analyzer (Belsorp max), VSM (155 PAR), UV-vis spectrophotometer (JASCO V-750), UV-vis DRS, XPS (ESCA+, Omicron Nanotechnology), and 400W Hg lamp. Materials included strontium nitrate, ferric nitrate, manganese chloride, sodium hydroxide, hydrogen peroxide, methyl orange, remazol deep red, p-nitrophenol.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
Synthesis involved dissolving metal salts in distilled water, adjusting pH to 12 with NaOH, stirring, filtering, washing, drying at 100°C, and annealing at 600°C and 800°C. Catalytic and adsorption experiments involved dispersing catalyst in pollutant solution, adjusting pH, stirring in dark for adsorption-desorption equilibrium, irradiating with visible light after adding H2O2, sampling at intervals, separating catalyst with magnet, and analyzing supernatant with UV-vis spectrophotometer.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
Data analysis included calculation of crystallite size using Debye-Scherrer equation, lattice parameters using Le-Bail refinement, band gap using Tauc relation, degradation efficiency using absorbance measurements, adsorption capacity using equilibrium equations, and kinetic studies using pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order models.
