  • Improvement of 60 GHz transparent patch antenna array performance through specific double-sided micrometric mesh metal technology

    摘要: This paper presents the performance of optically transparent 4 × 2 microstrip patch antenna arrays operating at 60 GHz and made from double-sided micrometric mesh metal layers. A high level of optical transparency (higher than 80%) over the entire visible light spectrum coupled with a sheet resistance lower than 0.5 Ω/sq of the mesh metal films are achieved. Microwave performance of the transparent antenna arrays has been performed from two different mesh ground plane patterns and compared with those of an opaque antenna array made of double-sided continuous metal films. A gain value equal to 13.6 dBi at 58.0 GHz has been recorded, against 15.6 dBi at 59.7 GHz for the opaque antenna array. The influence of the mesh structure and mesh parameters of the ground plane is investigated and discussed.

Formulas for predicting the sidelobe levels based on the error statistics are well known. These same random errors also cause an error in the axial ratio of a circular polarized array. This paper presents some new expressions for the change in axial ratio as a function of the random errors.

  • Generalized Friis Transmission Equation for Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) Radios

    摘要: Generalization of a Friis transmission equation for orbital angular momentum (OAM) radios is rigorously formulated using the Lorentz reciprocity theorem and a near-and-far-field convolution integral (NFCI). Based on the discretization of NFCIs, we computed the generalized Friis transmission equation to obtain the power-receiving behaviors of practical helicoidal parabolic reflector antennas (HPRAs) with continuously deformed surfaces. A simplified Friis equation is also used for computing the link budget and approximate Rayleigh length of discrete uniform circular arrays (UCAs) composed of 2×2 dipole antennas. The transmission coefficients for the given OAM modes, represented by our equations for the HPRA and UCA, agree very well with commercial numerical simulators. In addition, an mth-order NFCI, which is an orthogonal convolution integral for the mth OAM mode, is proposed to define a figure of merit for the OAM mode purity of transmitting and receiving antennas.

In this paper horizontal dipole array embedded in different dielectric slabs and different slab thickness is considered. Based on which, and radiation patterns are generated. Such patterns are used in point-to-point communications, scan, and non-scan radar applications.

    摘要: A simple and practical technique for reducing the mutual coupling between neighbouring antennas is presented for application in densely packed antenna arrays. This is achieved by locating between the radiation elements a smaller patch with metamaterial decoupling structure (MTM-DS). In this case the radiating elements are circular patches and the MTM-DS is constructed from a hexagonal slit resonator. The consequence of implementing the MTM-DS patch is significant reduction in mutual coupling between adjacent radiating patches by 60%, improvement in impedance match by 200% and substantial increase in the antenna’s fractional bandwidth by 369%. Since the ground plane is unaltered the front-to-back ratio is unaffected too. The proposed technique is easily realizable and can be used effectively in beam scanning applications.

  • PATTERN SYNTHESIS FOR LARGE PLANAR ANTENNA ARRAYS USING A MODIFIED ALTERNATING PROJECTION METHOD

    摘要: A pattern synthesis approach based on a modi?ed alternating projection method for large planar arrays is presented in this paper. In the alternating projection method, pattern synthesis problem is considered as ?nding the intersection between two sets: the speci?cation set and the feasible set. The former contains all the patterns that want to be obtained, while the latter contains all the patterns that can be realized. An element belongs to both sets is a solution to the problem. In this paper, a modi?ed projection operator which varies with the iteration number is introduced because the conventional alternating projection method is known to su?er from low convergence rate and/or trapping on local optimum depending on the starting point. When the planar array has a nonuniform element layout, the unequally spaced elements are interpolated into virtual uniform elements with an interpolation of the least square sense. Then the synthesis problem is converted to the problem of a uniform array. Finally, several examples are presented to validate the advantages of the proposed method. Results show that the modi?ed method is fast and obtains better results than the conventional one.

    摘要: The evolution from 1G through 5G cellular technologies has been fueled mainly by the insatiable need for speed, lower latency, high reliability and enhanced flexibility of use across the wireless ecosystem. Using multiple antennas in conjunction with complex modulation schemes has rendered each generation of cellular technology an enhanced version over its former counterpart. 5G technology aims to exploit previously unchartered higher millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies & larger bandwidths towards realizing the goal of greater data throughput, while simultaneously enhancing data reliability and reducing latency. The small wavelength of mmWave signals makes it possible to design 5G devices using several multi-element phased array antennas with small element-element spacing. However, unlike the antenna designs of 2G/3G/4G devices, 5G multi-element antennas would be integrated with the radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC) board of the 5G device. The tight integration between antennas and RFIC renders the antenna port of the device under test (DUT) inaccessible for physical connections using cables/connectors to test equipment. Since conducted testing with cables is not feasible anymore, radiated over-the-air (OTA) testing becomes mandatory for 5G mmWave device verification. This paper aims to assess the feasibility of candidate OTA test methods for 5G mmWave test requirements. The challenges of testing 5G mmWave devices over-the-air have been elucidated and alternative OTA test solutions for overcoming these challenges have also been discussed.

  • Nanoplasmonics || Plasmonic Nanoantenna Array Design

    摘要: Recently, wireless optical communication system is developing toward the chip level. Optical nanoantenna array in optical communication system is the key component for radiating and receiving light. In this chapter, we propose a sub-wavelength plasmonic nanoantenna with high gain operating at the standard optical communication wavelength of 1550 nm. The designed plasmonic antenna has a good matching with the silicon waveguide in a wide band, and light is fed from the bottom of the nanoantenna via the silicon waveguide. Furthermore, we design two kinds of antenna arrays with the proposed plasmonic nanoantenna, including one- and two-dimensional arrays (1 × 8 and 8 × 8). The radiation characteristics of the antenna arrays are investigated and both arrays have high gains and wide beam steering range without grating lobes.

    摘要: The Kilpisj?rvi Atmospheric Imaging Receiver Array (KAIRA) is a dual array of omnidirectional VHF radio antennas located near Kilpisj?rvi, Finland. It is operated by the Sodankyl? Geophysical Observatory. It makes extensive use of the proven LOFAR antenna and digital signal-processing hardware, and can act as a stand-alone passive receiver, as a receiver for the European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) very high frequency (VHF) incoherent scatter radar in Troms?, or for use in conjunction with other Fenno-Scandinavian VHF experiments. In addition to being a powerful observing instrument in its own right, KAIRA will act as a pathfinder for technologies to be used in the planned EISCAT_3-D phased-array incoherent scatter radar system and participate in very long baseline interferometry experiments. This paper gives an overview of KAIRA, its principal hardware and software components, and its main science objectives. We demonstrate the applicability of the radio astronomy technology to our geoscience application. Furthermore, we present a selection of results from the commissioning phase of this new radio observatory.

    摘要: This work investigates and develops the physical reconfiguration and deployment of a previously designed 2x2 corporate-fed microstrip patch antenna array. The physical reconfiguration of the antenna is achieved using a Miura-ori fold pattern due to its utilization for deployment. Increasing the fold angle impacts the input impedance and beamforming capabilities by changing the element spacing and orientation. The previous design experienced a graceful degradation in electromagnetic performance as the fold angle increased. Further optimization led to a more robust and functional antenna array system. The antenna is enhanced by designing the array with circularly polarized patch elements. The use of circular polarization eliminates the need to study the polarization changes during intermediate folding states and enables pattern reconfigurability. The performance of the circularly polarized array is evaluated over a comprehensive range of angles to evaluate the impact of physical reconfiguration. Results from a simulated circularly polarized array are provided for a 3GHz design.
