  • Contributed Review: The saga of neutrinoless double beta decay search with TeO <sub/>2</sub> thermal detectors

    摘要: Neutrinoless double beta decay (0ν β β) is a direct probe of physics beyond the standard model. Its discovery would demonstrate that the lepton number is not a symmetry of nature and would provide us with unique information on the nature and mass of the neutrinos. Among the experimental techniques employed in the investigation of this rare process, thermal detectors fulfill the requirements for a powerful search, showing an excellent energy resolution and the possibility of scaling to very large masses. In this work, we review the long chain of bolometric experiments based on TeO2 crystals that were and continue to be carried out at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy), searching for 0ν β β of 130Te. We illustrate the progress and improvements achieved in almost thirty years of measurements and compare the various performance and results. We describe the several steps that led to the CUORE detector, the latest of this series and presently in data taking, and we highlight the challenges that a next bolometric experiment will face in order to further improve the sensitivity, especially concerning the background abatement. Finally, we emphasize the advantages of 130Te in the search for 0ν β β with a further future experiment.

  • A comparison of water photo-oxidation and photo-reduction using photoelectrodes surface-modified by deposition of co-catalysts: Insights from photo-electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

    摘要: The purpose of this research paper is to highlight the similarities in the kinetic treatment between water photo-oxidation into molecular oxygen and water photo-reduction into molecular hydrogen, using photoelectrodes surface modified by deposition of co-catalysts. Photo-anodes made of TiO2 nanorods surface-covered by crystals of cobalt Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework (ZIF-67), and photo-cathodes made of Rh:SrTiO3 particles surface-modified by adsorption of molecules of trisdioximate hexa-chlorine cobalt (II) clathrochelate (Co(Cl2Gm)3(BCH3)2), have been prepared and used for water photo-oxidation and photo-reduction experiments, respectively. Both photoelectrodes have been characterized by SEM and cyclic voltammetry under illumination conditions. Charge transfer mechanisms have been investigated by photo-electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (PEIS). It is shown that for both systems, the presence of a co-catalyst increases the charge transfer kinetics, and that the trapping resistance is larger than the charge transfer resistance, at any operating potential.

  • Au as a cocatalyst loaded on solid solution Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 for enhancing photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity

    摘要: Au as a cocatalyst was deposited on the surface of solid solution Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 by a photodeposition method for photocatalytic reduction of CO2. Au particles loaded on the surface of Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 apparently enhanced the photocatalytic activity of CO2 reduction toward CO evolution. The highest rate of CO evolution was obtained over 1.0 wt% Au/Bi0.5Y0.5VO4, reaching 3.5 times of that of bare Bi0.5Y0.5VO4. The improved photocatalytic performance was assigned to the lower overpotential of Au/Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 for CO evolution than that of bare Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 as well as the formation of Schottky barrier, which promotes the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs.

  • PAPR reduction in all-optical OFDM based on time interleaving odd and even subcarriers

    摘要: In this paper, a new all-optical approach for reducing peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in all-optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AO-OFDM) system based on time interleaving odd and even subcarriers (TIOES) is proposed and analytically modeled. In this approach, all subcarriers are initially modulated with higher modulation format such as m-array quadrature amplitude modulation (mQAM) and encoded by return-to-zero (RZ) coder. Then, odd and even subcarriers are temporally interleaved. An analytical model for estimating the impact of the interleaved time on PAPR reduction and induced nonlinear phase noise (NPN) is developed. The effect of reducing PAPR on performance of AO-OFDM system is also numerically investigated using VPItransmissionMaker? commercial software. This system utilizes an optical coupler-based inverse fast Fourier transform/fast Fourier transform. The results reveal that minimum PAPR is occurred when interleaved time between odd and even subcarriers equal to half symbol duration where the PAPR has been reduced by 3 dB. In addition, by employing proposed technique, the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is improved by about 2.5 dB at transmission distance of 800 km as compared with 4QAM AO-OFDM without PAPR technique.

  • Coronary artery calcium scoring with photon-counting CT: first in vivo human experience

    摘要: To evaluate the performance of photon-counting detector (PCD) computed tomography (CT) for coronary artery calcium (CAC) score imaging at standard and reduced radiation doses compared to conventional energy-integrating detector (EID) CT. A dedicated cardiac CT phantom, ten ex vivo human hearts, and ten asymptomatic volunteers underwent matched EID and PCD CT scans at different dose settings without ECG gating. CAC score, contrast, and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were calculated in the cardiac CT phantom. CAC score accuracy and reproducibility was assessed in the ex vivo hearts. Standard radiation dose (120 kVp, reference mAs = 80) in vivo CAC scans were compared against dose-reduced CAC scans (75% dose reduction; reference mAs = 20) for image quality and CAC score reproducibility. Interstudy agreement was assessed by using intraclass correlation (ICC), linear regression, and Bland–Altman analysis with 95% confidence interval limits of agreement (LOA). Calcium-soft tissue contrast and CNR were significantly higher for the PCD CAC scans in the cardiac CT phantom (all P < 0.01). Ex vivo hearts: CAC score reproducibility was significantly higher for the PCD scans at the lowest dose setting (50 mAs) (P = 0.002); score accuracy was similar for both detector systems at all dose settings. In vivo scans: the agreement between standard dose and low dose CAC score was significantly better for the PCD than for the EID with narrower LOA in Bland–Altman analysis, linear regression slopes closer to 1 (0.96 vs. 0.84), and higher ICC values (0.98 vs. 0.93, respectively). Phantom and in vivo human studies showed PCD may significantly improve CAC score image quality and/or reduce CAC score radiation dose while maintaining diagnostic image quality.

  • Utilizing an In Situ Reduction in the Synthesis of BaMoOF5

    摘要: A new molybdenum containing oxyfluoride, BaMoOF5, space group Cmcm with lattice parameters of a = 7.1445(3), b = 6.7894(3), c = 10.1969(4), was synthesized via a mild hydrothermal crystal growth method. The synthesis resulted in high-quality single crystals of the title material, which were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure is discussed in detail.

  • Photosensitizing single-site metal?organic framework enabling visible-light-driven CO2 reduction for syngas production

    摘要: Photocatalytic CO2 reduction into syngas (CO and H2) is one of sustainable strategies for recycling CO2 into value-added products. Herein, a simple and effective two-step self-assembly process was developed to functionalize phosphorescent metal-organic framework (MOF) with single site catalyst. The resulting (Co/Ru)n-UiO-67(bpydc) supplied molecular platform to enable fast multielectron injection from photosensitizers (PSs) to Co-catalyst, leading to the first MOF-based composite photocatalyst for efficient syngas production with a yield of 13600 μmol·g?1 (H2 : CO = 2 : 1) in 16 h, 29.2-fold higher than that of its homogeneous counterpart. The H2/CO ratios can be well controlled by carefully adjusting the molar ratio of PS/catalyst in the MOF platform and the water content in the photocatalytic system. This work provides a prospective strategy for recycling CO2 into H2-rich syngas by merging PSs and single-site catalysts into a MOF platform.

  • Correlation of surface processes with characteristic sensing responses of PdO thin films to ethanol

    摘要: Gas sensing characteristics of PdO nanoflake thin films exposed to ethanol (EtOH) at temperatures below 250 °C was studied. The PdO thin film responds distinctly to 0.15 ppm EtOH in dry air at temperatures above 100 °C. A characteristic valley-shaped response feature develops in the early stage of the exposure to EtOH at 150 °C and above. Formation of the valley feature is a result of the combined effects of two types of surface processes, which successively modify the sensor conductance in the opposite way. Dehydrogenation of adsorbed EtOH induces reduction of preadsorbed oxygen anions and the PdO substrate, resulting in the drop of the conductance. On the other hand, subsequent adsorption of EtOH and oxygen on newly growing Pd nanoclusters, which develop due to the reduction of the PdO substrate, causes the increase in the conductance. The Pd nanoclusters can be later reoxidized in the EtOH gas mixture, thereby modifying the sensing behavior of the PdO sensor. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffusive reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) were used to study adspecies and gaseous species formed in the EtOH gas sensing reactions. On the basis of the characteristic electrical response and chemical characterizations, we proposed the formation mechanism for the characteristic response feature.

  • VO2 microrods synthesized from V2O5 thin films

    摘要: Self-assembled single crystal VO2 microrods (MRs) with a length up to 600 μm have been synthesized on Si and sapphire substrates by the annealing of V2O5 thin films. The nucleation and growth of VO2 MRs from V2O5 thin films were investigated. The morphology and microstructure evolutions of the intermediate phases during the reduction process were characterized by SEM, HRTEM, XPEEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The results have shown that the conversion of V2O5 thin films to VO2 MRs is dominated by a melting-nucleation-growth mechanism. The growth of VO2 MRs can be controlled by V2O5 melting process and a consistent feeding of V2O5 liquids to the growing VO2 MR would lead to ultra-long VO2 MRs. Further, epitaxial growth of VO2 MRs can be induced by using an r-cut sapphire substrate.

  • Enhanced Photoreduction of Chromium(VI) Intercalated Ion Exchange in BiOBr <sub/>0.75</sub> I <sub/>0.25</sub> Layers Structure by Bulk Charge Transfer

    摘要: Owing to its low separating and utilizing efficiency of photo-generated charges in the bulk, the application of photocatalytic technique has been restricted for decades. In this paper, based on interlayer ion-exchange between BiOBr0.75I0.25 layers, we demonstrated a specific interfacial process of photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction by a direct bulk-charge transfer. The results showed that Cr(VI) was effectively converted to nontoxic Cr(III), even under neutral conditions (pH = 7.0). According to ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, the CrO4 2? anion was readily intercalated into the anion lattice layer of BiOBr0.75I0.25 by ion-exchange with OH? in the interlayer, forming a =Bi-O-CrO3 ? complex. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and photoelectron-chemistry measurements further revealed that excitation of =Bi-O- CrO3 ? by irradiation was crucial for photocatalytic detoxification of Cr(VI) under pH 7.0. The excitation of =Bi-O-CrO3 ? in BiOBr0.75I0.25 strengthened the bulk-charge transfer as follows: (i) electron transfer from O-II to CrVI produced CrV and O-I, respectively, via ligand-to-metal charge transfer excitation; and (ii) electron injection from BiOBr0.75I0.25 to [=Bi-O?I-CrVO3 ?]* (or exportation hole to valence band) resulted in the reduction of Cr(V) to Cr(III). After that, the newly formed Cr(III) in the interlayer of BiOBr0.75I0.25 was de-intercalated into solution due to the space charge repulsion between Cr3+ and Bi2O2 2+ slab, resulting in stable Cr(VI) reduction performance in a wide pH range from 2.0 to 7.0.
