  • A method for experimental thermo-mechanical aging of materials submitted to concentrated solar irradiation

    摘要: Concentrated Solar Technology can produce process heat, power and fuels from solar energy in the temperature range 150–1500 °C, bringing the question of the receiver ability to reliably perform over the expected lifetime. Conventional methods commonly used to assess the mechanical stability and lifetime involve in-door laboratory testing, which suffers from the fundamental inability to reproduce the real operating conditions. A previous work introduced an original experimental setup based on acoustic emission named IMPACT (In situ thermo-Mechanical Probe by ACoustic Tracking), designed for an in situ and passive characterization of receiver materials under harsh thermo-mechanical stresses. This paper proposes an original method, based on a modelling approach, to control the sample damage amplification with IMPACT, and assess its relevance through an experimental campaign on two selected materials (SiC and Inconel 625).

  • Parallel in-situ measurement of heliostat aim points in central receiver systems by image processing methods

    摘要: Central Receiver Systems use thousands of heliostats distributed in a field to reflect the solar radiation to a receiver installed at a tower. The large distances between the heliostats and their aim point require a high precision of the heliostat control and drive system to efficiently concentrate the solar radiation and to allow for a safe and reliable plant operation. Precise calibration procedures are needed for the commissioning of open loop systems. Furthermore, the need for cost reduction in the heliostat field motivates for precise and fast calibration systems allowing for savings in the design of the individual heliostats. This work introduces a method for the measurement of true aim points of heliostats in operation. A proposed application is the plug-in system HelioControl, to be used for parallel in-situ calibration of multiple heliostats in operation. The approach aims at extracting the focal spot position of individual heliostats on the receiver domain using image analysis and signal modulation. A centralized remote vision system, installed far from the harsh conditions at the focal area, takes image sequences of the receiver domain. During the measurement, a signal is modulated on different heliostats which is then extracted for the retrieval of the true aim points. This paper describes the theoretical background of the methodology and demonstrates the functionality based on two simulated cases showing the practical advantages introduced with this approach.

    摘要: The energy storage and fossil-backup (fossil-hybridization) systems of a concentrating solar power plant (CSP) provide a continuous production of energy all over the year and satisfy the grid demand even when the sun is not shining. One could ask about the behavior of the energy production, or the levelized energy cost, as a function of the energy storage and of the fossil-hybridization in such plants. This paper tries to answer this question. For this task, there have been performed numerous simulations on a central receiver plant with a fixed nominal power, varying the storage capacity and the level of hybridization. The results showed that these variables impact differently. For the thermal storage, from capacities ranging from 0h to 24h, there is a specific intermediary capacity, 15h, in which the levelized energy cost is minimum. But for the fossil-hybridization, this energy cost always decreases with the increment of the hybrid level. The results also showed that, if a given energy production is supported by a certain level of hybridization, its energy cost would be less than that supported by a storage system. This is due to the relatively high investment costs related to the storage system, and the relatively low cost of fuel.
