  • Fabrication tolerance analysis of grating couplers between optical fibers and silicon waveguide

    摘要: The grating structure and its performance for coupling between fiber and silicon-based waveguide are studied and analyzed. The coupling mechanism is illustrated through the grating Bragg diffraction condition, and the effect of physical parameters and alignment parameters of the grating coupler on the coupling efficiency is analyzed by FDTD (Finite-difference time-domain). The optimum design values of the period, duty cycle, etching depth and alignment parameters of the grating coupler are obtained, and at the same time, the deviation analysis on the optimal size is carried out. We present high-efficiency grating couplers fabricated both in EBL (Electron Beam Lithography) and Deep Silicon Etching through process optimization on device dimension, which can be useful for grating coupler fabrication.

    摘要: This paper proposed an X-band compact 3-dB waveguide coupler with high power capacity and compact structure designed for a SLED pulse compression device and conducted the researches on structure design, theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. The structure of the 3-dB coupler is very simple, which is mainly constructed by two standard rectangular waveguides with a coupling hole connects them. The numerical simulation results show that the reflection coefficient S11 and the transmission coefficient S21 are both smaller than -47dB at the center frequency of 9.3GHz, which means low reflection and high isolation between Port 1 and Port 2. The transmission coefficients S31 and S41 are - 2.99dB and -3.01dB, respectively, which implies good 3-dB coupling characteristic of the device. And the phase difference of the output signals of these two 3-dB coupling ports is exactly 90 degrees. The 3-dB coupler is with higher power capacity because there is no electric field enhancement in the coupling area. When two 45 MW microwave pulses with phase difference of 90 degrees are injected from Port 3 and Port 4, the microwave energy will be composited and output from Port 2. The maximum electric field of 300kV/cm appears in the center of the output waveguide. Under the vacuum condition, the power capacity of the 3-dB coupler is up to 250MW.

  • Efficient coupling of light from dielectric to HIMI plasmonic waveguide

    摘要: This is the ?rst report on the investigation of a hybrid plasmonic tapered coupler injecting light ef?ciently from conventional dielectric waveguide to a hybrid insulator–metal–insulator (HIMI) plasmonic waveguide. The proposed structure gives high transmission ef?ciency and suppresses the re?ection losses signi?cantly. With this tapered coupling mechanism, maximum transmittance and return loss of 98% and 26 dB have been observed, respectively. The coupler also offers very good propagation length (274 μm) along with minimal mode propagation losses (0.016 dB/μm). Apart from that, it offers decent con?nement of light in low dielectric regions up to 32%. The proposed structure is designed in an ultra-short tapered length of 1.0 μm, and the entire structure occupies a footprint area of 1.4 × 2.4 μm2. Proposed hybrid waveguide coupler could be useful for several chip scale applications.

    摘要: This paper presents a compact and low-profile bandpass filter (BPF) built of silica-based post-wall waveguide. The BPF adopts direct-coupled resonator filters based on cylindrical resonators. The filter is highly configurable in shape and allows flexible and compact design. A compact E-band hybrid-coupled diplexer is presented as an application. The dimensions of the BPF and diplexer are 4.0×4.0 mm2 and 9.4×9.9 mm2, respectively. The insertion loss of the lower passband of the diplexer is 1.52 dB at 72.9 GHz and that of the higher passband is 2.0 dB at 82.8 GHz

    摘要: A 2 × 3 substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) H-plane hybrid coupler operating at 28 GHz with constant phase shifting outputs is proposed. This proposed 6-port hybrid junction coupler can equally divide the input power into the three output ports, with a constant relative phase difference +120?, 0?, ?120?. Simulation results indicate that within 5% relative bandwidth, our designs achieve a good impedance matching with high isolation, and equal power division having constant phase shifting.

  • High sensitivity temperature sensor based on liquid filled hole-assisted dual-core fiber

    摘要: A high sensitivity temperature sensor is numerically and experimentally investigated in liquid filled eccentric hole-assisted dual-core fiber (EHADCF). The sensor is constructed by cascading two single mode fibers (SMFs) with an intermediate liquid filled EHADCF segment. The light couples periodically between the center and suspended cores due to small core distance. Refractive index (RI) matching liquid with high thermo-optic coefficient is filled into the air-hole of the EHADCF as the cladding of the suspended core. The dispersion curves of the center and suspended cores of the EHADCF change with the temperature, leading to the shift of the resonance peak. The measured temperature sensitivity of the sensor is -562.4 pm/°C. In addition, the stability of the sensor is also measured. Due to high sensitivity, good stability, compact size and large temperature range, the proposed sensor shows promising potentials for temperature sensing in environment monitoring.

  • Realization of a compact broadband polarization beam splitter using the three-waveguide coupler

    摘要: A compact broadband polarization beam splitter is designed and experimentally demonstrated based on a silicon-nitride-assisted three-waveguide coupler. With the help of coving a layer of silicon nitride on the center bridged silicon waveguide, the phase matching is met for the TM mode but not for the TE mode. The final optimized device length is only 7 μm, and the polarization beam splitter has the high extinction ratios of more than 30 dB for the TE mode and that of more than 20 dB for the TM mode in the wavelength ranging from 1.5 μm to 1.6 μm. And the corresponding insertion losses are less than 0.06 dB and 0.35 dB, respectively. The experimental measurement results also show the polarization beam splitter has good performances.

  • Long Range Multilayer Hybrid Plasmonic Waveguide Components and Integrated Circuit

    摘要: In this work, CMOS compatible hybrid insulator metal insulator (HIMI) planar plasmonic waveguide based components such as, racetrack ring resonator, y-splitter, coupler and dual parabolic profile nano antenna have been proposed and investigated at 1.55 μm operating wavelength for the first time. The proposed components are analyzed at various parametric variations using CST microwave studio. The proposed racetrack ring resonator offers 153.88 nm free spectral range, 0.3232 nm FWHM and 46.57 dB extinction ratio at 0.40 μm radius and 0.49 μm separation length. Y-splitter divides equal power of 46.85% in both output arms and coupler couples till 86.5% power in coupled arm. The dual parabolic profile nano antenna offers a gain, bandwidth and efficiency of 7.99 dB, 203 THz and 84.56 % respectively. Using all the components, HIMI plasmonic integrated circuits have also been designed and investigated for on chip applications. Proposed components work very efficiently in chip scale integrated circuit. This investigation provides groundwork for future chip scale applications.

  • The Critical Adiabatic Linear Tapered Waveguide Combined with a Multimode Waveguide Coupler on an SOI Chip

    摘要: A multimode waveguide interference (MMI) coupler is combined with a critical linear tapered waveguide on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) chip. When the TE0 mode is a critical adiabatic mode conversion from a single-mode waveguide to an extreme linear tapered waveguide combined with an MMI, this linear tapered waveguide is achieved to the maximum divergence angle (i.e., the shortest length). The maximum divergence angle is expressed by θ ≤ 2 tan? 1[(0.35Wmmi ? Ws)/(0.172Lmmi)] under a 1 × 1 MMI combined with this critical linear tapered waveguide. The expression formula is demonstrated by three di?erent widths of a 1 × 1 MMI of 4 μm/8 μm/12 μm combined with the critical linear tapered waveguide. So, the maximum divergence angle is obtained at θ ? 16°/14°/8°, with respect to this linear tapered waveguide loss of 0.022 dB/0.172 dB/0.158 dB, and this linear tapper length is reduced by 93.7%/92.9%/87.5% than the divergence angle θ ? 1°. The output power of a 1 × 1 MMI combined with a critical linear tapered waveguide is enhanced at least 1.5 times under 0.95 above condition.
