摘要: We show that e?cient multilayer optical routing is achievable with long range surface plasmon polaritons (LR-SPP) through an accurate design of vertical directional couplers (VDC). Our theoretical results suggest that by suitably tuning some geometrical parameters, in particular the path length and bend radius, it is possible to obtain a good control on the overall interaction, even in presence of fabrication non-idealities. We present a top-down fabrication process ?ow for LR-SPP multilayer optical circuits, obtained by stacking multiple ultrathin nanometric metal ?lms within a polymeric dielectric background; the overall structure has a good degree of mechanical stability. By pro?ting from the topological advantage given by VDCs, as one of the useful applications of our work, we propose a new optical integrated circuit architecture scheme, capable of connecting two separate circuit paths without in?uencing the geometry or signi?cantly promoting crosstalk with any other path in the middle. The possibility to develop vertically stacked optical integrated circuits upon electronic integrated circuits makes LR-SPPs a good technology for the production of inexpensive and high-density network systems.

Coupling Between Silicon Waveguide and Metal-Dielectric-Metal Plasmonic Waveguide with Lens-Funnel Structure
摘要: Various photonic integrated components have been implemented by ultra-thin silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides; therefore, it is desirable to couple ultra-thin SOI waveguides to plasmonic waveguides. In this paper, we present an ultra-thin SOI waveguide to a metal-dielectric-metal plasmonic waveguide based on a lens-funnel structure consisting of truncated Luneburg lens and metallic parabolic funnel. The lens is implemented by varying the guiding layer thickness. The effect of different parameters of the coupler’s geometry is studied using the finite-difference time-domain method. The 1.13-μm-long coupler improves the average coupling efficiency in the C-band from 66.4 to 82.1%. The numerical simulations indicate that the coupling efficiency is higher than 69% in the entire O, E, S, C, L, and U bands of optical communication.

Femtosecond Laser Written Depressed-Cladding Waveguide 2 × 2, 1 × 2 and 3 × 3 Directional Couplers in Tm3+:YAG Crystal
摘要: Ion-doped crystal-based compact devices capable of beam splitting and coupling are enthralling for a broad range of classical and quantum integrated photonics applications. In this work, we report on the fabrication of depressed-cladding waveguide 2D 2×2, 1×2 and 3D 3×3 directional couplers in Tm3+:YAG crystal by femtosecond laser writing. The performances of the couplers are characterized at 810 nm, showing single-mode guidance, polarization independence, ?nely matched splitting ratios. These results open up new opportunities in the bene?cial fabrication of 3D circuits and devices in crystals.

Insulator-Metal-Insulator-Metal-Insulator and Metal-Insulator-Metal Vertical Directional Couplers with Surface Plasmon Polariton Waveguides
摘要: We propose two vertical directional couplers (VDCs) based on surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waveguides. One is an SPP insulator-metal-insulator-metal-insulator (IMIMI) VDC. The SPP IMIMI VDC is composed of two 45-(cid:2)m-long S bends, an L (cid:2)m-long straight waveguide, a 4-(cid:2)m-long C gap, and a 500-nm-long M gap. The other is an SPP metal-insulator-metal (MIM) VDC. The SPP MIM VDC is composed of two 10-(cid:2)m-long S bends, an L (cid:2)m-long straight waveguide, a 60-nm-long C gap, and a 500-nm-long M gap. Au is used as the metal and a low-loss polymer is used as the insulator in the IMIMI and MIM waveguides. In the SPP IMIMI VDCs, the excited 5.0 (cid:2)m × 4.5 (cid:2)m input S-s0 mode propagates along the S bend_1, propagates and couples along the straight waveguide L, and propagates again along the S bend_2. The losses due to the L region of the SPP IMIMI VDC are 1.33 dB when L = 13 (cid:2)m and 2.26 dB when L = 23 (cid:2)m and the coupling length is ~10 (cid:2)m In the SPP MIM VDCs, the excited 1.7 (cid:2)m × 0.5 (cid:2)m input G-s0 mode propagates along the S bend_1, propagates and couples along the straight waveguide L, and propagates again along the S bend_2. The losses of L of the SPP MIM VDC are 1.50 dB when L = 5 (cid:2)m and 11.20 dB when L = 65 (cid:2)m and the coupling length is ~65 (cid:2)m. The SPP IMIMI and MIM VDCs can be a potential step in the process of integration from micro-scale to nano-scale.

COUPLED LINE RAT-RACE COUPLER WITH WIDE ADJUSTABLE POWER DIVIDING RATIO AND UNCROSSED INPUT/OUTPUT PORTS
摘要: A novel rat-race coupler with wide adjustable range of power-dividing ratio and uncrossed input/output ports is presented by using coupling adjustable trans-directional (TRD) coupled lines, parallel coupled lines and a 180? phase shifting line. Wide adjustable range of power-dividing ratios is accomplished by varying the coupling of the TRD coupled lines. Moreover, with the combination of the TRD coupled lines and parallel coupled lines, the input and output ports of the rat-race coupler are uncrossed. The structure of the proposed rat-race coupler is analyzed, and the design equations are derived. As an example to validate the feature of the proposed rat-race coupler, a prototype operating at 1.6 GHz is devised, fabricated and measured. The measured results show that the designed coupler has a wide adjustable range (?7 ~ 15 dB) of power dividing ratio with a controlled voltage range of 3.3 to 13.5 V.

Ultra-Compact Tunable Filtering Rat-Race Coupler Based on Half-Mode SIW Evanescent-Mode Cavity Resonators
摘要: In this paper, for the first time, an ultra-compact frequency-tunable filtering rat-race coupler based on half-mode evanescent-mode (EVA) cavity resonators is presented. Employing EVA cavity resonators in the coupler design yields attractive characteristics, such as a wide tuning range and a wide spurious-free range, while also adding filtering functionality to the device. The presented coupler is synthesized as a two pole bandpass filter using the coupling matrix method. Then, the coupling coefficients are mapped to a coupler topology. Design, simulations, and experimental validation are presented. The implemented rat-race coupler has a very compact size [0.14λg × 0.14λg (λg at 885 MHz)] achieving a 92% miniaturization in the structure footprint compared to the conventional planar one. The coupler has an 86% tuning range ranging between 0.885–1.65 GHz. Throughout the tuning range, the coupler shows an equal power splitting ratio and filtering profile with a measured insertion loss and 3-dB fractional bandwidth between 5 and 4.2 dB and 6.8% and 8%, respectively. The measured isolation is better than 30 dB. In addition, the coupler has a measured spurious-free range of 10.2 fo (at the lowest frequency) to 5.45 fo (at the highest frequency).

Contra-Directional Ridge Waveguide Couplers: Design and Applications
摘要: This article presents novel wideband contra-directional couplers based on single conductor ridge waveguide, and their applications. The couplers exhibit wide bandwidths and tight coupling while occupying very small volume due to the compactness of ridge waveguides. The methodology to design the couplers is presented. It is inspired by the even and odd modes used to design TEM coupled lines couplers but implemented with TE modes in this novel approach. The design starts with designing the coupling section in a quadruple-ridge waveguide that supports two independent even and odd TE modes. Proper choice of the cross section allows the designer to achieve the required impedance levels for the required coupling values. An S-band proof of concept prototype of a single coupler was synthesized, fabricated, and tested, demonstrating excellent measured results without any tuning. The couplers can be exploited in versatile applications, such as power sampling, beamforming, or high-power combiners. As an additional proof of concept design, a C-band three-way combiner was also designed and tested, showing the potential of the novel coupler for different applications.

摘要: For further increase of data rate in multimode fiber (MMF) links widely deployed in datacenters, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission technology is expected to be introduced. In this paper, we propose a Y-branched polymer waveguide with graded-index core for optical coupler in the MMF WDM links. The low loss structure of the Y-branched polymer waveguide is designed applying BPM simulation, and designed waveguide structures are actually fabricated using an imprint method to confirm their applicability to a low-loss optical coupler in MMF WDM links.
