Scaling effects on the optical properties of patterned nano-layered shape memory films
摘要: Nano-layered films of PVAc/PU systems were fabricated by forced assembly coextrusion method. The bulk shape memory properties of PVAc/PU systems were utilized to program nanoscale patterns such as diffraction grating which exhibit iridescence after patterning. A hot embossing process has been utilized to imprint diffraction grating patterns as nano-scale information onto the surface of the thin multilayer films. Three levels of hierarchy i.e. layer thickness, spacing and heights of patterns, governs the functionality of the patterned multilayer film. The time and temperature dependent viscoelastic shape memory behavior determines the opto-mechanical tunability of the film. Mechanical switching of the patterns also leads to optical switching of the films which corresponds to their efficiency of information retrieval. The recovery of patterns as well as the diffractive property depends on the layer thickness (l) of films and heights of patterns (h0). The results illustrate that the higher ratio of h0/l better is the recovery of the grating patterns and the corresponding diffractive properties. This scaling effect enables versatile applications in information security by tuning the layer structure of the multilayer shape memory films.

Differentiable Monte Carlo ray tracing through edge sampling
摘要: Gradient-based methods are becoming increasingly important for computer graphics, machine learning, and computer vision. The ability to compute gradients is crucial to optimization, inverse problems, and deep learning. In rendering, the gradient is required with respect to variables such as camera parameters, light sources, scene geometry, or material appearance. However, computing the gradient of rendering is challenging because the rendering integral includes visibility terms that are not differentiable. Previous work on differentiable rendering has focused on approximate solutions. They often do not handle secondary effects such as shadows or global illumination, or they do not provide the gradient with respect to variables other than pixel coordinates. We introduce a general-purpose differentiable ray tracer, which, to our knowledge, is the first comprehensive solution that is able to compute derivatives of scalar functions over a rendered image with respect to arbitrary scene parameters such as camera pose, scene geometry, materials, and lighting parameters. The key to our method is a novel edge sampling algorithm that directly samples the Dirac delta functions introduced by the derivatives of the discontinuous integrand. We also develop efficient importance sampling methods based on spatial hierarchies. Our method can generate gradients in times running from seconds to minutes depending on scene complexity and desired precision. We interface our differentiable ray tracer with the deep learning library PyTorch and show prototype applications in inverse rendering and the generation of adversarial examples for neural networks.

A Simplified Approach for Obtaining Optical Properties of VO <sub/>2</sub> Thin Films, and Demonstration of Infrared Shape-Shifting Devices
摘要: Micrometer-sized VO2-based devices with integrated resistive heaters of different configurations are fabricated. Quality of the VO2 films is confirmed by measuring the characteristic drop in transmittance and negative differential emissivity for these films. A two-interface model for optical transmittance, reflectance, and absorbance is presented. This method and analytic model presents an advantage over most typically used approaches in that it does not require direct measurements of the material’s optical constants to estimate transmittance. By combining the substrate and the VO2 film into one layer with a reduced optical admittance, the two-interface model is reduced to a single-layer model. Moreover, the present work demonstrates the implementation of the developed VO2-based devices in adaptive camouflage and shape-converting applications. Electrical pulses are used to program different emissivity states to convert geometric shapes inside a fully integrated VO2-based electro-optical window. This results in the reconfiguring of thermal images to either create new shapes, or shift from one to another.

摘要: Sharing schemes are emerging in residential and business sectors to reduce the purchase and operation cost of individuals. This paper proposes a framework to support the operational management of a shared EV fleet. An optimization algorithm is developed to coordinate the charging and reservation assignment using mixed integer programming. The integration with local PV production and battery storage is taken into account. A booking algorithm is also developed to determine whether a reservation can be accepted or not. Monte Carlo simulation is performed in the case study to demonstrate an application of the proposed framework with the Swedish travel patterns. The result provides an overview about the utilization rate of the fleet with different number of EVs, which can support the investment decision of an EV sharing community. The result also shows that the EVs and battery are effectively coordinated to minimize the total cost, satisfy the reservations and comply with grid limits.

摘要: Low-latency applications such as augmented reality, cognitive assistance, and context-aware computation are better supported by augmenting cloud networks with cloudlet enabled edge computing solution. This overcomes the high-transmission latency arising from the edge devices in the access segment to cloud servers located in the core. In this talk, we will review our recently proposed hybrid cost-optimization framework for optimal cloudlet placement over existing passive optical access networks, subject to capacity and latency constraints. In our work, we formulate a mixed-integer non-linear program to identify ideal locations (either at the central office (CO), remote node (RN), or in the field) for cloudlet placement over three deployment areas of differing population densities. Our results point to the fact that the installation of more RN and CO-located cloudlets will yield an improved cost optimal solution than the installation of field cloudlets alone, and that the percentage of the incremental energy budget arising from the installation of cloudlets are low.

摘要: The acquisition costs for industrial robots have been steadily decreasing in past years. Nevertheless, they still face significant drawbacks in the required effort for the preparation of complex robot tasks which causes these systems to be rarely present so far in small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) that focus mainly on small volume, high variant manufacturing. In this paper, we propose a camera-based path planning framework that allows the fast preparation and execution of robot tasks in dynamic environments which leads to less planning overhead, fast program generation and reduced cost and hence overcomes the major impediments for the usage of industrial robots for automation in SMEs with focus on low volume and high variant manufacturing. The framework resolves existing problems in different steps. The exact position and orientation of the workpiece are determined from a 3D environment model scanned by an optical sensor. The so retrieved information is used to plan a collision-free path that meets the boundary conditions of the specific robot task. Experiments show the potential and effectiveness of the framework presented here by evaluating a case study.

摘要: Development and improvement of solar forecasting models have been extensively addressed in the past years due to the importance of solar energy as a renewable energy source. This work presents an application and improvement of intra-day solar predictive models based on genetic programming. Forecasts were evaluated in time horizons of 10 minutes up to 180 minutes ahead as future steps at two completely different locations: one in northern hemisphere and another in the southern hemisphere. The improvement strategy was validated in comparison of error metrics to the ones obtained by benchmark methods of solar forecasting. The proposed model results will be presented and validated for each considered location.

The joint weight enumerator of an LCD code and its dual
摘要: A binary linear code is called LCD if it intersects its dual trivially. We show that the coefficients of the joint weight enumerator of such a code with its dual satisfy linear constraints, leading to a new linear programming bound on the size of an LCD code of given length and minimum distance. In addition, we show that this polynomial is, in general, an invariant of a matrix group of dimension 4 and order 12. Also, we sketch a Gleason formula for this weight enumerator.

Automatic robot path integration using three-dimensional vision and offline programming
摘要: In manufacturing industries, offline programming (OLP) platforms provide an independent methodology for robot integration using 3D model simulation away from the actual robot cell and production process, reducing integration time and costs. However, traditional OLP platforms still require prior knowledge of the workpiece position in a predefined environment, which requires complex human operations and specific-purpose designs, highly reducing the autonomy of the systems. The presented approach proposes to overcome these problems by defining a novel automated offline programming system (AOLP), which integrates a flexible and intuitive OLP platform with a state-of-the-art autonomous object pose estimation method, to achieve an environment and model independent platform for automatic robotic manufacturing. The autonomous recognition capabilities of the three-dimensional vision system provide the relative position of the workpiece model in the OLP platform, with robustness against clutter, illumination, and object material. After that, the user-friendly OLP platform allows an efficient and automatic path generation, simulation, robot code generation, and robot execution. The proposed system precision and robustness are analyzed and validated in a real-world environment on four different sets of experiment. Finally, the proposed system's features are discussed and compared with other available solutions for practical industrial manufacturing, showing the advantages of the proposed approach. Overall, despite sensor resolution limitations, the proposed system shows a remarkable precision and promising direction towards highly efficient and productive manufacturing solutions.

An optimization model for quadratic flow thinning – a traffic protection mechanism for FSO networks
摘要: Flow thinning (FT) is an active traffic protection mechanism destined for communication networks with variable capacity of links, for example wireless networks. In FT, end-to-end traffic demands are equipped with dedicated logical tunnels (for example MPLS tunnels) whose maximal capacities are subject to thinning in order to follow the fluctuations of the currently available link capacities. It follows that for each demand the instantaneous traffic realized between its end nodes must accommodate to the current total capacity available on its dedicated tunnels. In the paper we develop an optimization model for network dimensioning for an applicative modification of FT, the so called Quadratic Flow Thinning (QFT), and present a solution algorithm based on the path generation method. We derive relevant pricing problems for basic variants of the QFT mechanism (and for its special case Affine Flow Thinning, AFT), and present a numerical study that illustrates efficiency of the optimization algorithm, as well as compares the network cost for different variants of QFT and AFT.
