  • Tailoring Properties of Microcavity In-line Mach-Zehnder Interferometer by the Microcavity Enlargement using Femtosecond Laser

    摘要: This work presents a theoretical analysis and experimental verification of fine-tuning of the spectral response and refractive index (RI) sensitivity of microcavity in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer (μIMZI). The μIMZIs were fabricated using femtosecond (fs) laser micromachining in standard single-mode fibers as circular cavities with a diameter of 60 μm. Next, the structures underwent fs laser post-processing, which included fabrication of an additional cavity with the same diameter but shifted by 15 μm or 30 μm against the center of the initial microcavity. Different depths of the additional structures were investigated. The enlargement of the microcavity allows for tailoring the spectral response, i.e., it shifts the interference pattern by more than 200 nm, with no introduction of any additional losses and distortions in the spectrum. As the additional effect, regardless of the size of the extension, the sensitivity of the enlarged μIMZI was improved by 32%.

  • An optical fiber strain sensor by using of taper based TCF structure

    摘要: We propose an optical fiber strain sensor consisting of a spliced twin-core fiber (TCF). The sensor structure has two fiber tapers, which are weak taper and T-shaped taper. The taper waist of T-shaped taper is about half-size of the weak taper, but the length of the T-shaped taper is also about half-length of the weak taper. In the sensing structure, core mode and cladding modes of the TCF are excited simultaneously. Two tapered regions around the splicing interfaces can play the roles of splitting and combining the modes in the fiber. In experiment, the proposed device has good quality interferometric spectra, and the highest extinction ratio of 20 dB is achieved. When the stress increases from 0 με to 841.5 με, different wavelength sensitivities of 3.31 pm/με and 6.11 pm/με are achieved. Different intensity sensitivities of 7.5 × 10?3 dB/με and 9.9 × 10?3 dB/με are also achieved, respectively. The sensor has shown good test stability and low temperature sensitivity, which is good for precise strain measurement in practical applications.

  • Large-scale fabrication of highly elastic conductors on a broad range of surfaces

    摘要: Recently, a great stretchability progress has been witnessed in elastic electronics. However, such electronics are either costly, toxic, or cannot pattern on a broad range of substrates which limit their large-scale fabrications and applications. Here, to overcome those limitations, an ink comprising liquid metal particles and desirable polymer solutions is developed. The polymer solutions in our ink can be adjusted to print on different surfaces and avoid toxic organic solvents in most cases. The ink can be sintered by small strain (~10%) in room temperature. Using our ink, conductors with high stretchability (380,000 S/m at a strain of 1000%) can be printed in low consumption (liquid metal consumption 3.27 mg/cm2), in large area (bestrew entire surface of a T-shirt) and in high throughputs (~105 cm2 per hour). The ink can be printed on a T-shirt to achieve a smart wearable platform that integrates electronics for strain/electrophysiology/electrochemistry detection, and temperature monitoring/controlling.

  • Wafer-scale Fabrication of Nitrogen-doped Reduced Graphene Oxide with Enhanced Quaternary-N for High-Performance Photodetection

    摘要: We demonstrated a simple and scalable fabrication route of nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) photodetector on 8-inch wafer-scale. The N-rGO was prepared through in-situ plasma-treatment in an acetylene-ammonia atmosphere to achieve n-type semiconductor with substantial formation of quaternary-N substituted into the graphene lattice. The morphology, structural, chemical composition and electrical properties of the N-rGO was carefully characterized and being used for the device fabrication. The N-rGO devices were fabricated in a simple metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) structure with unconventional metal-on-bottom configuration to promote high-performance photodetection. The N-rGO devices exhibited enhanced photoresponsivity as high as 0.68 A W?1 at 1.0 V, which is about two orders of magnitude higher compared to a pristine graphene and wide-band photo-induced response from visible to near-infrared (NIR) region with increasing sensitivity in the order of 785 nm, 632.8 nm and 473 nm excitation wavelengths. We also further demonstrated a symmetric characteristic of photo-induced response to any position of local laser excitation with respect to the electrodes. The excellent features of wafer-scale N-rGO devices suggest a promising route to merge the current silicon technology and two-dimensional materials for future optoelectronic devices.

  • Dispersion flattened extremely high-birefringent kagome lattice elliptic core photonic crystal fiber in THz regime

    摘要: A highly birefringent elliptic porous-core photonic crystal fiber with kagome lattice cladding has been presented for terahertz (THz) wave transmission. The slotted airholes inside the elliptic core effectively disrupt the symmetry of the porous-core which offers extremely high modal birefringence whereas the kagome cladding structure results in significantly low effective material loss (EML). The birefringence of the proposed structure is 9.73 × 10?2 for y-polarized mode at an operating frequency of 1 THz. The suggested structure also provides very flat dispersion over a bandwidth of 300 GHz. It is highly expected that this elliptic core waveguide would be remarkably useful in numerous polarization maintaining THz applications.

  • An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Nanomanipulation of SiO2 Nanoparticles: Design, Fabricationand Feasibility

    摘要: Although some recent developments in nanotechnology made the prospects of a direct mechanical manipulation of micro- or nano-objects quite realistic, there are still several concerns and difficulties that affect such an endeavor. This is probably due to the large base of knowledge that is necessary to approach the problem of handling a nano-object by means of a nano- or micro-device. Therefore, any progress in this field is possible only by means of an integrated and interdisciplinary approach, which takes into account different aspects of the phenomenon. During the actual pioneering phase, there is a certain convenience in handling nano-objects that: (a) have peculiar known characteristics; (b) are easily recognizable, and (c) are interesting to the scientific community. This paper presents the interdisciplinary activities that were necessary to set up an experiment where specifically synthesized SiO2 particles came in contact with the tips of specifically-designed and -fabricated nanomanipulators. SiO2 mesoporous nanoparticles (KCC-1), having a peculiar dendritic structure, have been selected as a suitable nano-object because of the possibility to easily modulate their morphology. The expected contact force has been also calculated by means of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) electro-mechanical simulations.

  • 22.3: Low cost fabrication of high contrast ratio and high transmission wire grid polarizer by nanoimprint lithography

    摘要: This paper proposes a novel approach for low cost fabrication of large area wire grid polarizer (WGP). WGPs regarded as one potential alternative to traditional rear polarizer and DBEF possess the advantages of large contrast ratio (CR), high transmission. To date WGPs can be fabricated through electron beam direct write, which is slow and expensive, therefore not suitable for large area application. With the development of nano-fabrication methods, for instance, nanoimprint lithography (NIL), large area WGP can be made at low cost and fast speed. Furthermore, flexible polarizer can also be made through roll-to-roll (R2R) NIL. In this paper, a WGP with high TM transmission of around 85% and low TE transmission down to 0.2% through the visible light spectra will be realized through nanofabrication. The contrast ratio of the WGP can reach >450 with peak value >3000. For the fabrication process, atom layer deposition (ALD) will be utilized to prepare imprint mask which can achieve highly precise control of expected structure. In this paper, characterization of the designed WGP will also be narrated in the back part, including transmission, CR and the SEM schematic diagram. We believe that low cost fabrication method shows the potential to be adopted for industrial fabrication of polarizer in the future.

    摘要: This work provides Antenna in package (AiP) implemented on Advanced single sided substrates (aS3 package) , which utilizes low-cost substrate and low-cost assembly process. The dipole antenna implemented on aS3 package results in a peak gain of 5 dBi at operating frequency band. The return loss of < - 10 dB bandwidth is from 65 to 81 GHz. The resonant rectangular series-fed patch array implemented on aS3 package results in a peak gain of 8 dBi at operating frequency band. The return loss of < - 10 dB bandwidth is from 76 to 81 GHz. The antenna performance of antenna on aS3 package meets the requirements of 77 GHz automotive radar systems. This work also discuss with the impact of fabrication inaccuracies on the antenna bandwidth and gain. For 77 GHz automotive radar application, the corner analysis of process variation supports correct antenna performance and a short time to market.

  • Large area silicon-air-silicon DBRs for infrared filter applications

    摘要: This paper presents the design, fabrication, and optical characterization of silicon-based thin film Fabry-Pérot filters for spectroscopic sensing applications at short-wave infrared (SWIR: 1.5–2.5 μm) and mid-wave infrared (MWIR: 3–5 μm) wavelengths. Filter performance is enhanced using distributed Bragg reflectors composed of silicon and air-gap layers for enhanced refractive index contrast. A peak-to-peak surface variation of less than 20 nm in the fabricated micromachined structures was achieved across a large spatial area of 1 mm × 1 mm. Spectral measurements on released Fabry-Pérot filters show excellent agreement with optical simulations. The fabricated Fabry-Pérot filters demonstrate peak transmittance values greater than 50% across all spectral ranges, with measured full width at half maximum values in the range of 50 nm rendering them suitable for use in spectral sensing and imaging in the SWIR and MWIR wavelength ranges.
