  • Tip Packaged High-Temperature Miniature Sensor Based on Suspended Core Optical Fiber

    摘要: Lip control system is an innovative human–computer interface specially designed for people with tetraplegia. This paper presents an evaluation of the lower lip potential to control an input device, according to Fitts’ law (ISO/TS 9241-411:2012 standard). The results show that the lower lip throughput is comparable with the thumb throughput using the same input device under the same conditions. These results establish the baseline for future research studies about the lower lip capacity to operate a computer input device.

    摘要: In this research, we use eye tracking to monitor the attentional behavior of pilots in the cockpit. We built a cockpit monitoring database that serves as a reference for real-time assessment of the pilot’s monitoring strategies, based on numerous flight simulator sessions with eye-tracking recordings. Eye tracking may also be employed as a passive input for assistive system, future studies will also explore the possibility to adapt the notifications’ modality using gaze.

    摘要: Optical See-Through Head-Mounted Displays (OST-HMDs) lose the visibility of virtual contents under bright environment illumination due to their see-through nature. We demonstrate how a liquid crystal (LC) ?lter attached to an OST-HMD can be used to dynamically increase the perceived brightness of virtual content without impacting the perceived brightness of the real scene. We present a prototype OST-HMD that continuously adjusts the opacity of the LC ?lter to attenuate the environment light without users becoming aware of the change. Consequently, virtual content appears to be brighter. The proposed approach is evaluated in psychophysical experiments in three scenes, with 16, 31, and 31 participants, respectively. The participants were asked to compare the magnitude of brightness changes of both real and virtual objects, before and after dimming the LC ?lter over a period of 5, 10, and 20 seconds. The results showed that the participants felt increases in the brightness of virtual objects while they were less conscious of reductions of the real scene luminance. These results provide evidence for the effectiveness of our display design. Our design can be applied to a wide range of OST-HMDs to improve the brightness and hence realism of virtual content in augmented reality applications.

    摘要: Most of visually impaired people use a white walking stick. It extends a touchable region to an extent that may include some obstacles, and then helps them to walk. The wider the touchable region is, the better it seems to be. However, a too long stick is inconvenient in terms of portability. Also the user is liable to hit someone with it. Thus, the touchable region is limited to the periphery of the user, even if he uses a stick. We propose a contactless walking stick system that can be used in place of a white walking stick. Our system consists of a short stick, which has a color ball at its head and vibrators at its three sides, and a depth sensor mounted at a user’s forehead. The depth sensor continuously observes an area on the ?oor to which the user with the color ball, and once an obstacle appears in the area, the stick informs the existence of the obstacle through vibration in the side of it. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of our system, we have conducted experiments. As a result, we have observed that the number of collision can be decreased by 85% in average, although consumed time increases by 45% in average.

  • RGB-D static gesture recognition based on convolutional neural network

    摘要: In the area of human–computer interaction (HCI) and computer vision, gesture recognition has always been a research hotspot. With the appearance of depth camera, gesture recognition using RGB-D camera has gradually become mainstream in this field. However, how to effectively use depth information to construct a robust gesture recognition system is still a problem. In this paper, an RGB-D static gesture recognition method based on fine-tuning Inception V3 is proposed, which can eliminate the steps of gesture segmentation and feature extraction in traditional algorithms. Compared with general CNN algorithms, the authors adopt a two-stage training strategy to fine-tune the model. This method sets a feature concatenate layer of RGB and depth images in the CNN structure, using depth information to promote the performance of gesture recognition. Finally, on the American Sign Language (ASL) Recognition dataset, the authors compared their method with other traditional machine learning methods, CNN algorithms, and the RGB input only method. Among three groups of comparative experiments, the authors’ method reached the highest accuracy of 91.35%, reaching the state-of-the-art currently on ASL dataset.

    摘要: Mixed reality (MR) has proven to be an efficient tool for finding solutions to problems in different areas. This paper presents the implementation of an interactive application with Microsoft HoloLens head mounted display, which enables spatial interaction with synthetically generated 3D objects. 3D manipulations, such as positioning, scaling and rotating are also included in the functionality. The application discussed here works with 3D rigid objects that physically behave properly within the VR environment. The study discusses the methods used to build a user-friendly application and the main steps for its creation.
