  • Benefits, problems and challenges of plant factories with artificial lighting (PFALs): a short review

    摘要: The benefits and problems to be solved and challenges for plant factories with artificial lighting (PFALs) are discussed. The benefits include high resource-use efficiency, high annual productivity per unit land area, and production of high-quality plants without using pesticides, regardless of weather. A major problem to be solved is high initial investment and operation costs. Challenges for the next-generation smart PFALs include the introduction of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence with the use of big data, genomics and phenomics (or methodologies and protocols for noninvasive measurement of plant-specific traits related to plant structure and function).

  • A review on smart application of supplemental lighting in greenhouse fruiting vegetable production

    摘要: Different spectra of light trigger different plant growth processes. Therefore, the optimum light spectrum for various plant physiological and growth processes may be different. For greenhouse fruiting vegetables, such as tomatoes, it is important to optimize light spectrum to promote canopy growth to increase light interception during the early stage of plant growth. Once the plants reach full canopy, the focus should be moved to optimizing vertical light distribution because most greenhouse fruiting vegetables are tall crops and the growth processes along the vertical profile are different; most of the canopy growth occurs in the top and middle canopy while fruit growth occurs in the middle and bottom canopy. Because the fruit, not the leaf, is the economic product, the optimized light spectral composition should enhance leaf carbon export and translocation to fruit to improve fruit yield and quality. Therefore, a research project was initiated in 2013 to identify proper light spectral composition and vertical distribution regimes for greenhouse fruiting vegetable production. Different overhead light sources (high-pressure sodium light with or without far-red light-emitting diode (LED) light, plasma light and different spectral compositions of LEDs) and several intra-canopy spectral compositions provided by LEDs were evaluated over four winters on tomatoes, mini-cucumbers and sweet peppers. The effects of light spectrum on whole-plant net carbon exchange and leaf carbon export using 14C-isotype tracing were also investigated. The vertical light regimes resulted in significant differences in leaf photosynthetic rate, leaf size, fruit yield and fruit quality in greenhouse tomatoes, mini-cucumbers and sweet peppers. Proper vertical light regimes were identified for hybrid light systems (overhead high intensity discharge light + intra-canopy LEDs) and for pure LED light systems (overhead + intra-canopy LEDs). This review clearly demonstrates that optimized vertical light regimes can be developed for improving both plant growth and fruit yield and quality in year-round greenhouse fruiting vegetable production.

    摘要: The article focuses on the further verification of the software goniophotometer in the BUILDING DESIGN computational program in terms of the possibility of calculating the radiation of the liminous flux flowing into the upper half- space from public lighting systems [1]. Software goniophotometer was tested by the previous verification for the accuracy of calculations of the direct and indirect component of luminaire luminous flux. The superstructure was conceived as the possibility of inserting a network of calculating points in the shape of a sphere. We can imagine the points showing normal illuminance towards the centre of the sphere as a lux meter sensor. The system thus designed duplicates the function of a real goniophotometer, a photometric laboratory instrument that measures luminous intensity or luminous intensity curves. The principle of a goniophotometer is that it allows to measure the luminous intensity in different planes and at different angles, which can be easily interpreted by a sphere with a network of calculation points. The density of the calculation points can be entered in an angular step according to the standard luminaire measurement plan C, γ. The goal of implementing such a network of calculation points is to extend the possibilities of a computational program for modelling the luminous intensity curves of existing luminaires as well as newly composed luminaires. The main goal is calculating the radiation of the liminous flux flowing into the upper half-space from the outdoor lighting systems. It will be the basis for further astronomical calculations that focus on distracting light and increased sky luminance. Based on the testing, it will be possible to create model of lighting system in some city or district of the city by inserting LDT data of real luminaires, thus creating a real lighting system with real building models. From the resulting model, it will be possible to quantify the proportion of the direct and indirect luminous flux flowing into the upper half-space.

  • Advances in automotive interior lighting concerning new LED approach and optical performance

    摘要: Automotive interior lighting has to follow general trends in lighting and will therefore evolve toward hundreds and even thousands of RGB LEDs per car. Creating mood at day and night, pixelated sign-like information, and theater-like effects like welcome and goodbye messages are examples for outstanding user experience. Furthermore, safety features such as warnings and driving state are a must for autonomous cars. It requires new concepts for the whole interior lighting system to reach premium quality such as data rate (beyond today's bus standard for lighting), support for safety rules, compensation of temperature effects, daylight performance (including huge dimming range for night drive), uniformity in terms of luminance and color along the light guide, and mixing of red, green, and blue (RGB) with white. We report a new automotive RGB light-emitting diode (LED) system that fulfills the above requirements and saves effort as well as cost by calibration before integration. Extensive studies were performed for daylight threshold evaluation with subjects and methods for judging on uniformity for direct-lit RGB light guides based on the contrast sensitivity function and Gaussian fit of the LED luminance profile.

  • Tunable spectrum resemblance of LED lights for improving the photosynthetic action of Chinese Cabbages

    摘要: To increase efficiency, and reduce energy loss and waste, we propose to improve the photosynthetic action spectrum resemblance (SRPAS) of LED light with the absorption spectra of the fresh leaf, for accelerating the growth of Chinese Cabbages. Eight spectral LED lights were adopted to irradiate Chinese Cabbages under 150 μmol·m-2·s-1 for a 16 hd-1 photoperiod. Of these, under the irradiation of blue + broad red + more yellow (BRY2) light with high spectrum resemblance of 75%, the fresh weight and dry weight are 5.1times and 3.0 times, respectively, and the leaf area and leaf number are 1.7 times, as high as under the blue light. The results demonstrate that the optimized LED light can be presumed to have the highest spectrum resemblance (SRPAS) with the absorption spectra of Chinese Cabbages, and the highest energy-conversion efficiency. These conclusions may be of great benefit to further assess and find either an ideal light applied for plant growth or design of better light sources for growing different plants.

  • Speed breeding short-day crops by LED-controlled light schemes

    摘要: Key message A simple and rapid speed breeding system was developed for short-day crops that enables up to five generations per year using LED lighting systems that allow very specific adjustments regarding light intensity and quality. Abstract Plant breeding is a key element for future agricultural production that needs to cope with a growing human population and climate change. However, the process of developing suitable cultivars is time-consuming, not least because of the long generation times of crops. Recently, speed breeding has been introduced for long-day crops, but a similar protocol for short-day crops is lacking to date. In this study, we present a speed breeding protocol based on light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that allow to modify light quality, and exemplarily demonstrate its effectiveness for the short-day crops soybean (Glycine max), rice (Oryza sativa) and amaranth (Amaranthus spp.). Adjusting the photoperiod to 10 h and using a blue-light enriched, far-red-deprived light spectrum facilitated the growth of short and sturdy soybean plants that flowered ~ 23 days after sowing and matured within 77 days, thus allowing up to five generations per year. In rice and amaranth, flowering was achieved ~ 60 and ~ 35 days after sowing, respectively. Interestingly, the use of far-red light advanced flowering by 10 and 20 days in some amaranth and rice genotypes, respectively, but had no impact on flowering in soybeans, highlighting the importance of light quality for speed breeding protocols. Taken together, our short-day crops’ speed breeding protocol enables several generations per year using crop-specific LED-based lighting regimes, without the need of tissue culture tools such as embryo rescue. Moreover, this approach can be readily applied to a multi-storey 96-cell tray-based system to integrate speed breeding with genomics, toward a higher improvement rate in breeding.

  • Three-Legs Interleaved Boost Power Factor Corrector for High-Power LED Lighting Application

    摘要: In this article, a three-leg interleaved boost Power Factor Corrector (IBPFC) converter for energy-efficient LED lighting systems connected to the main grid was discussed. This IBPFC circuit presented features 60 kHz of commutation frequency and up to 3 kW of power rating. The controlled rectifier front-end boost PFC supplied a DC/DC converter to drive power LEDs suitable for street lighting or a lighting system for a stadium, etc. The IBPFC operated in continuous current mode (CCM). The ripple impact of the IBPFC converter was analyzed and a novel methodology of inductance design was presented. In the proposed design approach, the derivative calculation of the current ripple peak compared with the derivative of the input current was used to define a critical inductance value to ensure the CCM condition. Experimental validation was provided on a 3kW prototype.

  • Correspondence: Disturbance of vision by after-images from LED light sources

    摘要: Modern LED-lighting for roads and tunnels causes difficulties for authorities and for users. The causes differ from the usual disturbance caused by glare, dazzle and flicker. Based on casual real world observations, it is felt that a cause might be the occurrence of after-images. After-images are, of course, a well-known and well-established visual phenomenon going back more than two centuries to the times of Goethe, Fechner and Helmholtz. After-images persist for a period that may, depending on the circumstances, amount to many minutes and even to hours. They are either positive or negative, and they may exhibit colour phenomena. Under road and street lighting using traditional gas-discharge light sources, after-images may be disregarded because of their limited duration and severity. However, modern LED lighting is different.
