Coincident molecular auxeticity and negative order parameter in a liquid crystal elastomer
摘要: Auxetic materials have negative Poisson’s ratios and so expand rather than contract in one or several direction(s) perpendicular to applied extensions. The auxetics community has long sought synthetic molecular auxetics – non-porous, inherently auxetic materials which are simple to fabricate and avoid porosity-related weakening. Here, we report, synthetic molecular auxeticity for a non-porous liquid crystal elastomer. For strains above ~0.8 applied perpendicular to the liquid crystal director, the liquid crystal elastomer becomes auxetic with the maximum negative Poisson’s ratio measured to date being -0.74 ± 0.03 – larger than most values seen in naturally occurring molecular auxetics. The emergence of auxeticity coincides with the liquid crystal elastomer backbone adopting a negative order parameter, QB = -0.41 ± 0.01 – further implying negative liquid crystal ordering. The reported behaviours consistently agree with theoretical predictions from Warner and Terentjev liquid crystal elastomer theory. Our results open the door for the design of synthetic molecular auxetics.

Pursuing High Quality Phase-Only Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) Devices
摘要: Fine pixel size and high-resolution liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) backplanes have been developed by various companies and research groups since 1973. The development of LCoS is not only bene?cial for full high de?nition displays but also to spatial light modulation. The high-quality and well-calibrated panels can project computer generated hologram (CGH) designs faithfully for phase-only holography, which can be widely utilized in 2D/3D holographic video projectors and components for optical telecommunications. As a result, we start by summarizing the current status of high-resolution panels, followed by addressing issues related to the driving frequency (i.e., liquid crystal response time and hardware interface). LCoS panel qualities were evaluated based on the following four characteristics: phase linearity control, phase precision, phase stability, and phase accuracy.

Spray Deposition of Ag Nanowire–Graphene Oxide Hybrid Electrodes for Flexible Polymer–Dispersed Liquid Crystal Displays
摘要: We investigated the effect of different spray-coating parameters on the electro-optical properties of Ag nanowires (NWs). Highly transparent and conductive Ag NW–graphene oxide (GO) hybrid electrodes were fabricated by using the spray-coating technique. The Ag NW percolation network was modi?ed with GO and this led to a reduced sheet resistance of the Ag NW–GO electrode as the result of a decrease in the inter-nanowire contact resistance. Although electrical conductivity and optical transmittance of the Ag NW electrodes have a trade-off relationship, Ag NW–GO hybrid electrodes exhibited signi?cantly improved sheet resistance and slightly decreased transmittance compared to Ag NW electrodes. Ag NW–GO hybrid electrodes were integrated into smart windows based on polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) for the ?rst time. Experimental results showed that the electro-optical properties of the PDLCs based on Ag NW–GO electrodes were superior when compared to those of PDLCs based on only Ag NW electrodes. This study revealed that the hybrid Ag NW–GO electrode is a promising material for manufacturing the large-area ?exible indium tin oxide (ITO)-free PDLCs.

Effective permittivity of liquid crystal nanodispersions and composites with different pore structure
摘要: The volume filling fraction dependence of the effective permittivity of the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4’-cyanobiphenyl embedded in different porous membranes and dispersed with aerosil nanoparticles was determined using broadband dielectric spectroscopy in the frequency range from 106 to 109 Hz. The experimental data were analyzed and compared with some existing theories based on the effective medium approximation and their modifications. The obtained effective permittivities as a function of the volume filling fraction lie between the lower limits of the Wiener and Hashin–Shtrikman bounds. The observed shift of the experimental points reflects the changes in the structure of the investigated composites.

Synthesis and mesomorphic properties of the nematic mesophase benzoxazole derivatives with big twist angle of difluoro-biphenyl unit
摘要: Modifying the position and numbers of lateral fluorine substituent is a common method to design and adjust the mesophase of liquid crystal compounds. Here, a series of 2-(2,2?-difluoro-4?-alkoxy-1,1?-biphenyl-4-yl)-5-substituted benzoxazole with both non-polar (H, CH3) and polar (NO2) groups (coded as nPF(2)PF(2)Bx) is synthesised and characterised. All of the compounds show a conspicuous inter-ring twist angle of 38° compared with corresponding reference compounds I and II which are calculated by density functional theory method, and it is interesting to note that the final compounds nPF(2)PF(2)Bx show only nematic mesophase during heating or cooling. Meanwhile, the UV-vis absorption bands and photoluminescence emission peaks both display remarkable blue-shifted. The aforementioned results reveal that lateral difluoro substituents play a key role to stable the nematic mesophase by increasing the dihedral angle of biphenyl.

B7 liquid crystal filament growth in the presence of carbon nanotubes
摘要: Liquid crystal phases formed from bent-core mesogens have attracted much interest of the liquid crystal research community, due to the manifestation of chirality effects from achiral molecules. One of the most elusive of the bent-core phases is the B7 phase, which at its early stage often forms in a helical filament fashion. We investigate the growth of such filaments in the presence of single-walled nanotubes to elucidate possible effects on the growth dynamics and helicity of B7 helical filaments. It is found that the filament width slightly decreases in comparison to the neat B7 material, suggesting a more tightly bound structure around the nanotubes, with the nanotubes likely acting as the core of the helical filament. No effects on pitch or periodicity of the helical superstructure is observed. The filament growth velocity quickly decreases as nanotubes are added to the B7 phase, indicating that a more tightly bound structure needs a longer time of formation. An observed buckling instability is of interest as a microscopic example for the study of nonlinear dynamics theories of filaments. The present investigation is thus of general importance for nanoparticle directed growth of filaments, which has applications in biomolecular growth and high tensile strength fibres.

Label-free protein quantitation by dielectric spectroscopy of dual-frequency liquid crystal
摘要: A dual-frequency-liquid-crystal (DFLC)-based biosensor was developed and its frequency-dependent dielectric properties were exploited to detect and quantitate a protein standard, bovine serum albumin (BSA). By analyzing the dielectric spectra of DFLC in the presence of BSA at various concentrations, we found that the difference in dielectric permittivity between the high- and low-frequency regimes is correlated to BSA concentration, thereby permitting a DFLC-based protein quantitative method. The dielectric properties of DFLCs are fundamental in the design of liquid crystal displays and fast-switching devices. Results from this study demonstrate the extended potential of the frequency-revertible dielectric anisotropy of DFLC in biosensing and protein quantitation.

Dispersion of fluorescent dye in the nematic liquid crystal: Enhanced photoluminescence and high birefringence
摘要: In the present investigation optical, electro-optical and dielectric properties have been measured for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) material 1550C which is consisted of 4’-(trans, trans-4-alkylbicyclohexyl) carbonates and 4’-(4-(trans,trans-4-alkyl)-4-cyanobicyclohexane, dispersed with fluorescent dye (Benzo 2,1,3 Thiadiazole) in two different concentrations. Photoluminescence has been enhanced for dye dispersed system which is the key finding of this investigation. UV absorbance study has also been performed and found to be increased for composite system. Enhanced birefringence after dispersion of dye into pure NLC is also a prominent result of this investigation. Relative permittivity, threshold voltage and dielectric anisotropy have also been measured and found to be increased. The outcome of the present work may be very useful in the construction of liquid crystal displays (LCDs).

Numerical Modeling of the Static Electric Field Effect on the Director of the Nematic Liquid Crystal Director
摘要: A two-dimensional model of the Frederiks effect is used to investigate the static electric field effect on the orientation of the nematic liquid crystal (LC) director in a side-electrode cell. The solutions are obtained by the standard finite-difference methods. The programs for the numerical solution of a two-dimensional parabolic partial differential equation are developed both in FORTRAN and C/C++. The Frederiks transition threshold for the central part of the cell and the dependences of the director’s orientation distribution on a high electric field are obtained. The results of the calculation are compared with the experimental data.
