  • Dynamic operation of liquid crystal cell with inherently nanogroove-featured aligned carbon nanotube sheets

    摘要: The use of a highly aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) sheet as a multifunctional constituent for liquid crystal (LC) displays and electro-optic LC applications is assessed. The CNT sheet can perform a dual function: one is an alignment layer for LCs, replacing the commonly used rubbed polyimide film, and the other is a transparent conductive layer, taking the place of indium tin oxide. The hydrophobic treatment improved the adhesion quality between aligned CNT bundles and the glass substrate, which helps to preserve the inherently aligned nanogroove morphology of transparent CNT sheets. The test LC display cells, comprising 4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl molecules sandwiched between CNT-sheet-on-glass substrates, demonstrate the operation characteristics comparable to that of the conventional cell under temperature variation and ac electric field of 1 kHz. The results offer a possibility of deploying multifunctional CNT-sheet alignment layers in LC-based devices, especially in the future flexible display applications.

  • Highly sensitive temperature sensor based on Sagnac interferometer with liquid crystal photonic crystal fibers

    摘要: We propose and investigate a temperature sensor based on Sagnac interferometer with liquid crystal (LC) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) by finite element method (FEM). LC E7 which is anisotropic under electrical field is designed to be infiltrated into the cladding air holes of PCF. The birefringent PCF is then launched into a Sagnac interferometer. The interference spectrum of the Sagnac interferometer is influenced by the thermal effect of LC E7 and thus could be used to measure the temperature. The simulation results show that the temperature measuring sensitivity and resolution reach to 15 nm/K and 6.7E?4 K in the range of 290–320 K. The measuring range and sensitivity could be modified further by optimizing the PCF structure parameters.

  • Enhancement of flexoelastic ratio of nematic liquid crystal doped with hydrogen-bonded bimesogen molecules

    摘要: We synthesized a new liquid crystal (LC) dopant 4-[7-(4′-Cyanobiphenyl-4-yl)hexyloxy]bezoic acid (CBO7OBA) which can form dimers by hydrogen-bonding. We mixed the hydrogen-bondable CBO7OBA dopants with commercial nematic liquid crystal (NLC) mixtures and investigated the change of the flexoelastic ratio of the mixture. The flexoelastic ratio of the CBO7OBA-doped NLC mixture was increased up to 4.7 C/Nm, while that of the pure NLC was 2.0 C/Nm at room temperature. The greater flexoelastic ratio of the CBO7OBA-doped NLC mixture is thought to be due to the bent-shape and the large dipole moment of the CBO7OBA molecules.

  • Zirconia Nanocolloids Having a Nanospace of Poly(cyclodextrin): Preparation and Application to Liquid Crystal Devices

    摘要: Poly(β-cyclodextrin) (PβCyD)-protected ZrO2 nanocolloids were prepared by using a microwave reactor equipped with ultrasonic nozzle mixing at 240 °C for 30 min in a tetraethylene glycol solution of zirconium (IV) ethoxide in the presence of poly(β-cyclodextrin). Particles in PβCyD-protected ZrO2 nanocolloids have an average diameter of 7.2 nm and mainly distribute within the range of about 3 to 10 nm. The nanocolloids were dispersed in 4'-pentylbiphenyl-4-carbonitrile (5CB) and practical liquid crystal to construct novel twisted nematic liquid crystal devices (TN-LCDs). The response time of this TN-LCDs in the presence of PβCyD-protected ZrO2 nanocolloids was faster than that in the absence. The threshold voltage of TN-LCDs by doping PβCyD-protected ZrO2 nanocolloids decreased. The decrease of threshold voltage can reduce power consumption, which may meet the demands of future power-saving LCDs.

    摘要: Color vision deficiency (CVD), also known as color blindness, is commonly caused by genetic disorder. Unfortunately, as of 2018, there is not yet a cure for the condition. Contact lenses and glasses with color filter are possible solutions to CVD by applying uniform changes to user’s field of view (FoV). On the other hand, optical see-through head-mounted display (OST-HMD) can provide a controllable overlay to user’s FoV, which could help for making a better solution. To calibrate colors in FoV of a user with CVD, methods that often used, such as the daltonization process, need light reduce feature, which makes calibrated color darker. However, recent commercially available OST-HMDs don’t have a controllable way to decrease the brightness of incoming light. In this paper, we present an approach for light subtraction of OST-HMD using a transmissive LCD panel. A prototype system for achieving a controllable overlay to user’s FoV with OST-HMD by using scene camera, user-perspective camera, and the transmissive LCD panel was implemented.

  • Highly polarised electroluminescence in low aspect ratio mesogenic molecules

    摘要: We have synthesised the low aspect ratio mesogenic compounds containing one fluorene and two biphenyl moieties, and investigate their mesomorphic properties and the resultant anisotropic properties in both photoluminescence and electroluminescence. We introduced pentyloxy as a terminal flexible group in order to guarantee formation of mesophase and varied the lateral flexible group from propyl to octyl to control the mesogenic transition temperature. Eventually, in spite of the low aspect ratio mesogen, high polarisation ratio (PR) was achieved by spin-coating of luminescent nematogenic molecules. Furthermore, the PR was significantly enhanced by the additional thermal annealing process.

  • The fiftieth anniversary of the liquid crystal display

    摘要: A record is given of the special meeting organised by the UK&I Chapter of the Society of Information Display held at the Royal Academy of Engineering in London, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the RCA announcement of the first Liquid Crystal Display on 28th May 1968. Coming exactly eighty years after the report of the first liquid crystal materials, this announcement sparked interest across the globe, and particularly in the UK, Switzerland and Japan. Presentations of the early LCD history from Hilsum, Schadt and Raynes give insights into both the science and also the process of invention itself. These early contributors are followed by a view from the USA from Bos and representation from the companies Sharp and Merck that helped shape the success of these fascinating and useful materials. Also reviewed are talks on the use of organic semiconductors to drive plastic LCD by Sirringhaus, reflective LCD of Folium Optics, retail signage of Displaydata, as well as a look to the future from LCD competitors from Bodle (Phase Change Material displays) and BOE (OLED).

  • Thiol-ene reaction based polymer dispersed liquid crystal composite films with low driving voltage and high contrast ratio

    摘要: In this study, polymer dispersed liquid crystal composite films are obtained via a one-step fabrication technique based on photo-initiated polymerization-induced phase separation in a thiol-vinyl ether reaction. The effects of the compositions of two vinyl monomers, curing light intensity, curing light time, liquid crystal content and thiol content on the electro-optic properties of the polymer dispersed liquid crystal films were systematically investigated. It was demonstrated that a composite film with a low driving voltage (33.7 V), high contrast ratio (228.1) and short response time (<5.0 ms) was achieved. This is of great significance for the potential applications of polymer dispersed liquid crystal composite films.

  • A polarisation-free blue phase liquid crystal lens with enhanced tunable focal length range

    摘要: A polarisation-free blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC) lens with enhanced tunable focal length range is proposed. A matched conventional glass lens is introduced on a BPLC lens to increase the range of the tunable focal length. The focal length of the BPLC lens can be switched from positive to negative, the negative lens-like phase profile can be neutralised by the conventional glass lens to get an infinity focal length and the positive lens-like phase profile can be enhanced by the conventional glass lens to get a shorter focal length. The minimum focal length can be decreased to almost half of that after the proposed method is adopted in our simulation. Moreover, the proposed BPLC lens exhibits a good polarisation-free feature and the optical effect is relatively good.

  • Adsorption of the liquid crystal molecule 5CB on graphene

    摘要: We use density functional theory to explore the stable adsorption geometries of the liquid crystal molecule 5CB on a graphene sheet. First, we calculate the dependence of the polarizability of 5CB on its geometry. Our results break down the contributions of the cyano, biphenyl, and alkyl groups to the optical properties of 5CB, confirming the biphenyl group as the most influential. Second, we quantify possible adsorption structures of 5CB on graphene. We find that 5CB can stably adsorb with its biphenyl group oriented intermediate to the armchair and zigzag crystallographic directions, in addition to adsorbing with the biphenyl oriented along those directions.
