  • Novel High Gain, High Efficiency DC–DC Converter Suitable for Solar PV Module Integration With Three-Phase Grid Tied Inverters

    摘要: This paper proposes a novel configuration for high gain, high efficiency dc–dc converter comprising a single switch, two intermediate capacitors, and a coupled inductor for low voltage solar PV module fed applications. The high voltage gain is achieved by charging the intermediate capacitors through the coupled inductor in parallel and discharging in series. In a two winding coupled inductor, considered in the presented work, maximum two intermediate capacitors can be integrated with the secondary winding. A passive lossless clamped circuit is also provided in the converter, which recovers the leakage energy to improve the efficiency and alleviate large voltage spike. The structure of the circuit is such that the power device voltage stress is reduced thereby increasing the efficiency. The maximum power point tracking at various irradiation levels is implemented in the proposed converter. Laboratory prototype of a 300-W system with 30–45-V input and 700-V output was built to validate the theoretical claims. All the detailed analysis, simulation, and experimental waveforms are presented. A maximum converter efficiency of around 95% is achieved.

  • Evaluation of the reliability of solar micro-grids in emerging markets – Issues and solutions

    摘要: One of the most important technical features of a power system is its ability to deliver electricity reliably to the customers. Based on interviews with 12 energy service companies (ESCO) currently operating solar micro-grids in northern rural India, this study identified important factors related to technical design, customer behaviour and operations and management (O&M) that may result in contingencies in service. In addition, the study presents companies' innovative solutions to overcome these problems. Initially, the interview method allowed only a rough qualitative comparison of different reliability levels as the availability of comparable data was limited. We found that a more descriptive method for reliability assessment would create equally valuable information on renewable off-grid energy projects. We propose a simple framework for assessing reliability that highlights the particular features of off-grid areas in developing countries.

  • Modeling of photovoltaic power uncertainties for impact analysis on generation scheduling and cost of an urban micro grid

    摘要: In electrical systems, the main objective is to satisfy the load demand at the least cost without having imbalance between generation and consumption. Thus, the uncertainty of photovoltaic (PV) power production must be considered in generation planning of a power system. In this paper, we develop a modeling method of this uncertainty to consider it into the generation scheduling. The optimal generation scheduling in an urban microgrid is made by taking in consideration the operating reserve provision under stochastic characteristics of PV power prediction. By considering a prescribed risk level of unbalancing, a dynamic programming algorithm sets the operational planning of conventional generators by solving a non-convex mixed-integer nonlinear programming model, so that the operational cost and available operating reserve can be calculated. Then, the effect of PV power uncertainty into the unit commitment is analyzed by considering PV forecast intervals with a 95 % confidence level. The unit commitment is then recalculated with new generator set points and the same criteria. Finally, variations of the targeted minimized costs and obtained OR is analyzed according to the uncertainty.

  • Direct Current and Alternative Current Based Solar Micro-Grid in Rural Energy Infrastructure

    摘要: In India kerosene uses as primary source of lighting- 43% of rural and 7.1% of urban households, even most populated African countries (Uganda, Ethiopia, and Kenya) more than 60% of the population relies on kerosene as the primary lighting fuel. Though they have access to grid electrification the unreliable supply leaves them in complete darkness and hence compelling them to think of alternatives. Poor electrification and unreliable supply lead to usage of kerosene based lighting devices such as kerosene lamps, which not only provides lowly quality illumination but also results in hazardous smoke. Off-grid electrification can provide an alternative solution for many low demand users at lower cost than grid extension and market growth of rural energy service. Costs of off-grid technologies have decreased significantly over the last few years hence making it affordable. Morden micro grid has come up with a way to make lighting system accessible to most of the rural households. Solar based renewable energy technologies extensively development in the last decade, the Solar photo voltaic cell converts light energy into direct current using the photovoltaic effect. Battery devices storing the extra power generated at day time and used during nights. Inverters and power Store Electronic Systems are used to convert direct current power generated by solar photo voltaic systems to alternative current, and utilization of direct current /alternative current in renewable energy power system at higher capital cost. But the internal rate of interest makes it superior to other system. This paper a latest researcher’s review of assessment of Direct current (DC) and Alternative current (AC) based Solar Micro-grid in rural community. The paper is therefore structured as follows: overview of micro-grid AC and DC system with case studies. Sensibility analysis in Compression with decentralized Diesel Genset (DG) based on Net present value (NPV) Internal rate of interest (IRR) for DG set 92% (not included as environmental economics), the IRR for solar micro-grids 50% and solar micro-grids with Government subsidy 80%. Opportunities and challenges involved in the implementation of solar mini grid in rural energy infrastructure.

  • Islanding detection method of multi-port photovoltaic DC micro grid based on harmonic impedance measurement

    摘要: DC Grid does not transmit reactive power, nor does it offer frequency and phase issues. This results in malfunction of conventional islanding detection methods (IDMs) that rely on the above quantities. At present, the DC IDMs proposed in literatures are mostly active power injection methods based on DC/DC converters. However, in a multi-photovoltaic (PV) DC system, the synchronization of the injection of converters is difficult to guarantee, which may lead to detection failure. This paper proposes an impedance measurement IDM for multi-PV DC micro grid based on the analysis of high-frequency impedance model of power electronic devices. The impedance of DC converters is constant at high frequency and the harmonic impedance of the system changes significantly after islanding, so that islanding operation can be accurately detected. The harmonic impedance change directly reflects the structural changes of the system, and its calculation requires less disturbance intensity, which avoids the requirement of synchronous injection. Therefore, the method uses a DC/DC converter for injection, without the need for additional injection equipment. The method has little influence on power quality and theoretically has no none detection zone. Simulation results show that the method can perform accurately islanding detection in multi-PV DC micro grid.

    摘要: A large number of distributed photovoltaic power generations that are connected to the distribution network will have a serious impact on the power quality of the distribution network and load power security. Integrating energy storage and photovoltaic cells into the micro-grid can effectively improve the power quality of distribution network and the reliability of load consumption. This paper is a research on the seamless switching control strategy for micro-grid integrating photovoltaic and energy storage (MIPES). Firstly, it analyzes the boundary conditions of MIPES seamless switching control of grid-connected/islanded modes and studies the output characteristics of photovoltaic cells over a day. The DC bus voltage can be stabilized within a certain range to meet the requirements for MIPES seamless switching of grid-connected /islanded mode. Secondly, this paper analyzes the working characteristics of silicon controlled rectifier (SCR). The results show that when SCR is turned off naturally, the load voltage will rise sharply, affecting the safety of local load. Therefore, a control strategy for SCR switch forced shutdown is proposed to solve the problem of sharp rise of load voltage during grid-connected/islanded conversion of MIPES and to ensure the load security. Finally, relevant simulation studies are carried out to verify the rationality and effectiveness of the proposed control technology.

  • Approach for dimensioning stand-alone photovoltaic systems

    摘要: The intermittent nature of renewable energy sources has attracted much interest for integrating storage devices towards the deployment of micro-grid systems. In fact, these devices could be deployed into the system by decoupling energy production from consumption mainly by storing the extra produced energy from RES during the day for eventual usage at night. However, for standalone systems, computing the optimum size of energy production systems and storage devices is required for continuous electricity supply. In this paper, a micro-grid system is modeled, sized, and experimented according to a given consumption profile using a deployed prototype at our EEBLab.

    摘要: Micro-grid is one of the most effective ways to utilize renewable energy. It is of great significance to study how to realize the energy management of micro-grid and optimize the utilization of energy. Micro-grid is a system unit composed of distributed power generation, energy storage device, energy conversion device, load, control and protection device, etc. It is an autonomous system that can realize self-control, protection and management. Most of the power sources in the micro-grid are distributed power sources, such as wind turbine, photovoltaic power generation, micro gas turbine, fuel cell, super-capacitor, flywheel battery and other energy storage devices. Connecting them to the user end has the characteristics of low cost, low voltage and low pollution, and is the mainstream development direction of the current power system. This paper introduces the composition and control technology of micro-grid, as well as the energy management and simulation of optical storage micro-grid in island and grid-connected mode. In this paper, two modes of island and grid connection are simulated by Simulink. The results show that the optical storage micro-grid system with switching mechanism can effectively improve the utilization rate of photovoltaic power, realize the efficient integration and utilization of distributed power supply, and carry out load side operation management autonomously by switching switch.

  • Effects of battery technology and load scalability on stand-alone PV/ICE hybrid micro-grid system performance

    摘要: This study investigates the performance of hybridised micro-grids based on solar PV supplemented by Internal Combustion Engines (ICE). Three different battery technologies (lead acid, lithium-ion, and vanadium redox flow) as well as the effects of load demand scalability are considered. The optimisations are based on Cost of Energy (COE) but the analyses consider several performance indicators including Excess Energy (EE), Renewable Penetration (RP), and Duty Factor (DF). Optimisations are done using the software tool HOMER (Hybrid Optimisation Model for Electric Renewable) and consider systems spanning 10 to 50 houses (210kWh/yr to 1050kWh/yr) and subject to modelling featuring hourly temporal resolution. A sensitivity analysis is also conducted to see the effects of various input parameters on the Cost of Energy.

    摘要: Renewable energy based rural electrification system experiences fluctuation in generation efficiency due to various unpredictable dynamic changes such as solar irradiation levels, rainfall, dust accumulation, vegetation, etc. Due to these fluctuations the system experiences frequent power quality issues such as low voltage, power interruptions, operating the degradation of the performance and reliability of these solar micro grid systems. In this paper micro grid cluster interconnection methodology is proposed to improve the efficiency of the system. To develop real-time decisions on energy management and micro grid interconnections, we have designed an IoT system that is capable to monitor and learn the dynamic changes in power quality to control the subsystems for improving the quality of service. In this work we have analysed the need of such a system in one of the rural community having solar micro grid deployment in South India. Based on the needs we have designed and developed an end-to-end system consisting of perception layer, network layer and application layer. Detailed experimentation and laboratory and the evaluation was performed performance results are discussed in this paper.
