  • Broadband multi-resonant circular dichroism in metal-VO2 hybrid dagger-like plasmonic structure for switching application

    摘要: Metallic and metal-VO2 hybrid dagger-like novel chiral plasmonic structure is proposed and demonstrated numerically using finite difference time domain (FDTD) computation to realize broadband multi-resonant circular dichroism (CD). CD switching is realized in the hybrid system that can be actively controlled externally. Dagger-like structure is considered where asymmetry is introduced in both the arms of a dagger structure to break in-plane rotational symmetry making the structure in-planar chiral. Multi-resonant broadband CD between visible to infrared frequencies is observed in pure asymmetric metallic dagger-like structure (MDLS) made of gold, as well as, in asymmetric metal-VO2 hybrid dagger-like structure (MVHDLS). Interestingly, multi-resonant CD in MVHDLS vanishes completely when VO2 phase changes from semiconducting to metallic phase. Dynamic control of VO2 phase externally enables us to realize CD switching action in MVHDLS. The proposed structure opens up the possibility of switching based plasmonic and photonic CD applications.

  • Modeling the Impact of High Energy Laser Weapon on the Mission Effectiveness of Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles

    摘要: With the rapid development of high energy laser weapons (HELWs), the integration of HELW on unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) has become a hot research topic. To study the impact of HELW on UCAV mission effectiveness, this paper proposes a 4-level design framework based on the system-of-system (SoS) oriented design. To validate the framework, the impact of HELW is analyzed in four aspects: the strike capability, the stealth performance, the vulnerability, and the defense capability, where the UCAV design constrains are noted. Simulation experiments of penetration scenario are carried out using agent-based modeling and simulation. The simulation results show that the integration of HELW can increase the survivability and mission effectiveness rate (MER) of the UCAV, especially for UCAVs with high speed and stealth performance. But the MER of the UCAV does not increase with the increase of HELW output power in most cases, indicating the importance of balancing the HELW and UCAV performances in concept design.

  • Novel thermodynamic efficiency indices for choosing an optimal location for large-scale photovoltaic power generation

    摘要: Sustainable energy is a current key priority across the globe. Hence, renewable energy sources have been widely accepted as potential substitutes for fossil fuels in the existing energy infrastructures. A recent report showed that photovoltaic power generation constituted around 100 GW out of 2378 GW of the global renewable power capacity installed in 2018. Consequently, various researchers are investigating how the increasing utilisation of photovoltaics can be handled in order to reduce future environmental impacts; whilst leveraging their operational zero-emission. From a circular economic paradigm, recycling, reuse and reduction strategies are often adopted to improve the sustainability of systems. This study proposes novel thermodynamic ef?ciency indices as a resources reduction strategy. By selecting an optimal location for large-scale photovoltaic power generation (LSPPG), the same amount of resources (such as land space, materials, energy) will achieve higher utilisation ef?ciency. In this study, actual two-year solar radiation and temperature data were sourced from Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Abuja. A probability distribution modeling was used to generate statistical mean values for solar radiation and temperature based on the classical almost sure central limit theory. Then, Photovoltaic modeling and simulation code was used to simulate the power generation characteristics of the LSPPG. Comparative analyses of the results for a 5 MW (MW) LSPPG showed that statistical mean value of power generation, energy ef?ciency index and exergy ef?ciency index range from 0.76 to 0.99 MW, 1.315 to1.254 and 1.298 to1.237, respectively, across the locations studied. Overall, the thermodynamic ef?ciency indices can complement the current laboratory-based rating of the photovoltaic modules in order to establish the environmental, economic and policy rationales for sitting a LSPPG. This would ultimately improve the cradle-to-cradle management of LSPPG installations based on resources reduction strategy.

  • First-principles investigation on the interlayer doping of SnSe2 bilayer

    摘要: Using density functional theory calculations, we systematically investigated the effects of numbers and types of transition metals (TM) on the magnetic property of SnSe2 bilayer nanosheet. Our results revealed that, when one TM is introduced into the interlayer, the magnetic moment induced by the Co and Ni is tiny while it is largely strengthened with the doping of V, Cr, Mn, and Fe. When two TMs are inserted into the interlayer, Vand Cr make the system change into a weak antiferromagnetism (AFM) state while Mn-, Fe-, Co-doped systems display a weak ferromagnetism (FM) ground state. These FM states have the magnetic moments which double those of the one TM–doping systems. With the TM numbers further increasing to four, the robust AFM and FM features appear with the doping of Fe and Mn, respectively. Ni cannot induce any magnetism whatever the numbers of Ni are filling in. Interestingly, with the increase of the numbers of dopants, transitions from FM to AFM and AFM to FM are predicted to be realized on Fe-SnSe2 and Cr-SnSe2 systems, respectively. This kind of transition may be important for the applications in spintronic devices.

    摘要: Photovoltaic (PV) panel is used to convert solar energy into electricity. Increase in collection of solar radiations by Photovoltaic (PV) panel rises electricity output from it. By tracking the movement of sun, PV panel can be always positioned in such a way that it can collect maximum amount of solar radiations. This paper presents MATLAB simulation model of Dual Axis Solar Tracking System (DASTS), in which the PV panel can be rotated along two axes of rotation to track both east to west and north to south movement of sun. East to west angle selector and north to south angle selector provide particular angles to PV panel according to particular illuminance level at particular time of the day to rotate and position PV panel in such a way that it can always faces the sun. Readings of voltage, current and power obtain from PV panel with Dual Axis Solar Tracking System are taken at different times of the day and they are compared with readings of voltage, current and power obtain from fixed PV panel at different times of the day.
