  • Surfactant-free Exfoliation of Multilayer Molybdenum Disulfide Nanosheets in Water

    摘要: In this study, we report a potentially scalable method for producing multilayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets. The addition of a small amount of ammonia solution can improve the exfoliation of MoS2 nanosheets in water. The surface charge induced by spontaneous adsorption of hydroxyl ions on MoS2 surfaces favors the exfoliation process. The edge charge generated by the ionization of edge-attached groups facilities the dispersion of exfoliated nanosheets in water. It is also found that smaller MoS2 nanosheets show an improved photocatalytic performance, which stems from enhanced edge effects and a reduced flake thickness. This work opens a new vista on preparation and application of multilayer MoS2 nanosheets.

  • Metal Catalysts for Layer Exchange Growth of Multilayer Graphene

    摘要: Metal-induced layer-exchange growth of amorphous carbon (a-C) is a unique technique for fabricating high-quality, uniform multilayer graphene (MLG) directly on an insulating material. Here, we investigated the effect of transition metal species on the interaction between metals and a-C in the temperature range of 600–1000 °C. As a result, metals were classified into four groups: (1) layer exchange (Co, Ni, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ru, Ir, and Pt), (2) carbonization (Ti, Mo, and W), (3) local MLG formation (Pd), and (4) no graphitization (Cu, Ag, and Au). Some layer-exchange metals allowed for low-temperature MLG synthesis at 600 °C, whereas others allowed for high-quality MLG with a Raman G/D peak ratio of up to 8.3. Based on the periodic table, we constructed metal selection guidelines for growing MLG on an insulator, opening the door for applications that combine advanced electronic devices with carbon materials.

  • Transparent Electronics Using One Binary Oxide for All Transistor Layers

    摘要: A novel process is developed in which thin film transistors (TFTs) comprising one binary oxide for all transistor layers (gate, source/drain, semiconductor channel, and dielectric) are fabricated in a single deposition system at low temperature. By simply changing the flow ratio of two chemical precursors, C8H24HfN4 and (C2H5)2 Zn, in an atomic layer deposition system, the electronic properties of the binary oxide (HfxZn1?xO2?δ or HZO) are tuned from conducting, to semiconducting, to insulating. Furthermore, by carefully optimizing the properties of the various transistor HZO layers, all-HZO thin film transistors are achieved with excellent performance on both glass and plastic substrates. Specifically, the optimized all-HZO TFTs show a saturation mobility of ≈17.9 cm2 V?1 s?1, low subthreshold swing of ≈480 mV dec?1, high Ion/Ioff ratio of >109, and excellent gate bias stability at elevated temperatures. In addition, all-HZO inverters with high DC voltage gain (≈470), and all-HZO ring oscillators with low stage delay (≈408 ns) and high oscillation frequency of 245 kHz are demonstrated. This approach presents a novel, simple, high performance, and cost-effective process for the fabrication of indium-free transparent electronics.

  • [Springer Series in Optical Sciences] Fano Resonances in Optics and Microwaves Volume 219 (Physics and Applications) || Light-Tunable Fano Resonance in Metal-Dielectric Multilayer Structures

    摘要: Recent progress on Fano resonances exhibited by metal-dielectric multilayer structures is reviewed. The Fano resonance in the multilayer structures is caused by coupling between a surface plasmon polariton mode supported by a metal-dielectric interface and a waveguide mode supported by a system of three dielectric layers. Electromagnetic calculations of attenuated total reflection spectra demonstrate the feasibility of realizing the Fano resonance, and the predicted Fano resonance was indeed observed experimentally. Since the structure is simple, it is easy to add the photofunctionality to the structure. Incorporation of photofunctional dye molecules into the waveguide layer made it possible to tune the Fano resonance by light irradiation.

  • Kossel diffraction observed with X-ray color camera during PIXE of nano-scale periodic multilayer

    摘要: By combining Kossel di?raction with particle induced X-ray emission, we have developed a new methodology to analyze nano-scale thin ?lms. We report the Kossel di?raction generated by irradiating Pd/Y based nano-scale periodic multilayers with 2 MeV protons. The intensity of characteristic Pd Lα X-ray emission is measured as a function of the detection angle (grazing exit). An oscillation of its intensity is observed when the detection angle varies around the Bragg angle, which corresponds to the energy of the emission and the period of the multilayer. Use of the X-ray color camera enables the whole setup to be ?xed so that no angular scan is required, greatly simplifying the experimental condition. From the features of the Kossel curves, we are able to deduce that nitrided Pd/Y multilayers exhibit much less layer intermixing than the non-nitrided multilayers. The experimental results show that it is possible to distinguish by the shape of Kossel curves of multilayers with B4C barrier layers located in di?erent interfaces. This demonstrates that Kossel di?raction is structural sensitive.

  • Phase Change Behavior of Sn <sub/>20</sub> Sb <sub/>80</sub> /Si?Nano-Composite Multilayer?Thin?Films

    摘要: Nano-composite multilayer Sn20Sb80/Si thin films were studied by thermal, electrical and optical methods. Compared with Sn20Sb80, Sn20Sb80/Si film was proved to be a more promising candidate for phase change memory device applications because of its higher crystallization temperature (246?C) and larger crystallization activation energy (2.6 eV). The bandgap was broadened with the increase of Si layer thickness. The crystallization of Sn20Sb80 was restrained after the adding of more Si film layers confirmed by X-ray diffraction patterns. A smoother surface was obtained with the root-mean-square surface roughness of 0.753 nm for [Sn20Sb80(3nm)/Si(7nm)]5 thin film. The measurement using the picosecond laser technique showed that [Sn20Sb80(3nm)/Si(7nm)]5 thin film could achieve the crystalline-to-amorphous phase transform within 2.8 ns irradiated by the laser pulse.

  • Phase transitions in nanofilms of polar smectic liquid crystals with multilayer periodicity

    摘要: Optical investigations and calculation of structures were performed on ?lms of liquid crystal with the sequence of phase transitions in the bulk sample SmC??SmC??SmA?I. We investigated freestanding nano?lms with number of smectic layers from 2 to 6 with thickness commensurate, smaller, or greater than the period of SmC?d4 phases of the bulk sample. The number of phase transitions increases as the ?lm thickness increases. Under temperature change the transitions occur with conservation as well as with change of the direction of ?lm polarization with respect to the molecular tilt plane. In thick ?lms at high temperature the ?lm can be switched by electric ?eld from the state with longitudinal (parallel to the molecular tilt plane) into a state with transverse (perpendicular to the molecular tilt plane) electric polarization. In the framework of Landau theory of phase transitions, structures and phase transitions in the bulk sample and in nano?lms were calculated; values of interlayer interactions were estimated. The molecular structure was assumed to be planar with different sequences of synclinic and anticlinic orderings in nearest layers. The results of calculations are in good agreement with experiment.

  • Ge/Si Core/Shell Quantum Dots in an Alumina Matrix: Influence of the Annealing Temperature on the Optical Properties

    摘要: Structures with Ge/Si nanoparticles (quantum dots) in an aluminum-oxide matrix are of interest due to the combination of two basic semiconductors and the use of a matrix with a high permittivity and strong oxygen–metal bonding. In this study, multilayer nanoperiodic structures in the form of a substrate/Al2O3/Ge/Si/Al2O3…Al2O3 sequence of layers (with the period Al2O3/Ge/Si and the number of periods up to 20) are produced and then annealed at different temperatures. It is shown that, after annealing, the structures contain both Ge and Si crystalline particles, whose dimensions and number are defined by the deposited-layer thicknesses and the annealing temperature. The results obtained by different optical techniques suggest that the structures exhibit the quantum-confinement effect. This inference is supported by high-resolution microscopy.

  • X-ray emission from layered media irradiated by an x-ray free-electron laser

    摘要: This article presents a computational study of the x-ray ?uorescence induced by the irradiation of thin layered media by intense, short x-ray pulses. The treatment is based on a numerical solution of the Helmholtz wave equation both for the pump and for the ?uorescence signal. Consistently with a possible heating of the medium during the x-ray pulse, complex refractive indices are calculated at each time step from the results of an underlying treatment of atomic physics. In the context of an important core-hole production as a result of photoionization, we discuss the peculiarities of the resulting ampli?ed ?uorescence grazing emission and of the Bragg diffraction which can be realized at some angles inside a multilayer material or even in a perfect crystal.

  • Design of ultrathin OLEDs having oxide-based transparent electrodes and encapsulation with sub-mm bending radius

    摘要: Highly flexible ultrathin organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) hold vast potential as light sources particularly for wearable and imperceptible electronics. Most of the work demonstrated to date for highly flexible OLEDs, however, has relied on non-conventional transparent conductors such as conjugated polymers and has had no proper encapsulation or, if any, simple polymer-based encapsulation. We here demonstrate OLEDs that can be bent at a sub-mm radius even with conventional transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) and full encapsulation based on a multilayer gas barrier containing aluminum oxides, both of which are prone to strain-induced fracture. We realize such a small bending radius not only by adopting ultrathin substrates but also by exploiting the beneficial neutral plane shift toward the top of substrates identified in a system consisting of a ultrathin substrate and a multilayer device structure on its top. The proposed OLEDs exhibit stable performance after 1,000 bending iterations even at a bending radius far smaller than 1 mm and show similar reliability to that of glass-based reference devices even after two weeks in the acceleration test chamber.
