  • Effect of Substrate Temperature on Properties of Nickel Oxide (NiO) Thin Films by Spray Pyrolysis

    摘要: NiO thin films were deposited on a glass substrate and investigated for the physical properties optimized through substrate temperature (350–390°C) using a spray pyrolysis technique. The effect of substrate temperature on deposited NiO thin film was studied by thermogravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis, X-diffraction (XRD), field electron scanning electron microscopy, optical absorption and electrical measurement techniques. XRD analysis indicates that NiO thin films are of a polycrystalline cubic structure. Optical properties are calculated with help of transmittance and absorbance data in the wavelength range between 200 nm and 900 nm. The optical band gap energy values increased from 3.1 eV to 4.0 eV with substrate temperature. Further, the extinction coefficient, refractive index, and real and imaginary parts of dielectric constant and optical conductivities of NiO thin films were calculated. The electrical resistivity measurement shows conductivity of the NiO thin film increased with increase in substrate temperature.

  • Three Dimensional Structures of NiO Nanoporous/ZnO Nanoarray Film for Enhanced Electrochromic Performance

    摘要: An electrochromic device using the as-obtained NiO nanoporous/ZnO nanoarray working electrode was constructed and assembled. NiO nanoporous/ZnO nanoarray three dimensional structures was prepared on ITO glass substrate by a two-step route which combined chemical bath deposition method with hydrothermal method. NiO nanoporous/ZnO nanoarray electrode reveals noticeable improvement of electrochromism compared to unitary NiO nanoporous, including larger optical modulation (81%), higher coloration efficiency (78.5 cm2/C), faster response times (2.6 s and 9.7 s for coloring and bleaching), and favourable durability performance. Such enhancement is mainly attributed to the three dimensional structures of NiO nanoporous coated on ZnO nanoarray. Namely, (1) uniform hexagonal ZnO nanoarray loaded more amount of NiO nanoporous, (2) NiO nanoporous cross-linked with ZnO nanorods provided a loose interspace morphology, (3) stronger adhesion between ZnO nanorods and ITO rested with ZnO seed, (4) core-shell and cross-linked structures promoted electrolyte infiltration, and (5) appropriate bandgap improved the charges transfer.

  • Highly selective and sensitive xylene gas sensor fabricated from NiO/NiCr2O4 p-p nanoparticles

    摘要: Xylene is a harmful and hazardous volatile organic compound (VOC) indoors, thus selective and sensitive detection for subppm-level xylene is crucial, however a remained challenge. In this work, p-NiO/p-NiCr2O4 nanocomposites were successfully synthesized through a simple hydrothermal route and used as sensing materials. In the comparative gas sensing test, the sensor fabricated from NiO/NiCr2O4 (Cr/Ni=25 at%) nanocomposite exhibited the highest response (66.2-100 ppm) to xylene, which was 37.2 times higher than that of the pure NiO sensor. Moreover, the NiO/NiCr2O4 nanocomposite gas sensor showed not only superior xylene selectivity with low cross-responses to interfering gases such as ethanol (Sxylene/Sethanol =11.8) and acetone (Sxylene/Sacetone =10.2) but also ppb-level detection limit (1.2-50 ppb xylene) at 225 °C. The synergistic catalytic effect between NiO and NiCr2O4, optimized structural parameters and marked resistive variation due to the formation of nanoscale p-p heterojunctions were regarded as the main reasons for the ultrasensitive and selective xylene detection.

  • Fabrication of electrochemically nonporous NiO–ZnO/TiO2 nanotubes/Ti plates for photocatalytic disinfection of microbiological pollutants

    摘要: Nonporous NiO–ZnO/TiO2 nanotubes/Ti photocatalyst plates were fabricated via facile electrochemical method. The structural and morphological properties of the modified plates were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, while their photoelectrochemical (PEC) characterizations were evaluated by transient photocurrent responses and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Antimicrobial activities of the fabricated plates against Escherichia coli bacteria and Candida albicans fungi were studied under UV light irradiation. The results indicated that the photocatalytic and PEC activities of the NiO–ZnO/TiO2 nanotubes/Ti plates are much higher than those of TiO2 nanotubes/Ti, ZnO/TiO2 nanotubes/Ti and NiO/TiO2 nanotubes/Ti. The synergetic effect among NiO, ZnO and TiO2 nanotubes motivated a fast charge separation as well as a slow electron/hole recombination, thus increasing the photocatalytic performance of the nonporous NiO–ZnO/TiO2 nanotubes/Ti photocatalyst plate.

  • SO <sub/>2</sub> -sensing properties of NiO nanowalls synthesized by the reaction of Ni foil in NH <sub/>4</sub> OH solution

    摘要: Nickel oxide (NiO) is a p-type metal-oxide semiconductor with wide-ranging applications. Recent studies have focused on the gas-sensing properties of this semiconductor. This study introduces an easy process for growing NiO nanowalls on a glass substrate using Ni foil and aqueous NH4OH. The morphology and structure of the NiO nanowalls are investigated and confirmed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The gas-sensing properties of the prepared nanowalls are tested using a dynamic gas-testing system wherein the target gases are H2S, NO2, NH3 and SO2. Gas-sensing data show that the synthesized NiO nanowalls are highly responsive toward SO2. Additionally, a sensing device prepared based on the NiO nanowalls is found to be stable during measurements, exhibiting a linear variation with changes in SO2 concentration.

  • The Effects of the Content of NiO on the Microstructure and Photocatalytic Activity of the NiO/TiO2 Composite Film

    摘要: The NiO/TiO2 composite films with the NiO content of 3 %, 5 %, 10 %, 13 %, 15 % and 20 % were prepared by mechanical coating technology and subsequent oxidation process. The composition and microstructure of the films were analyzed by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The photocatalytic activity was evaluated and the effects of the content of NiO on microstructure and photocatalytic activity of the films were studied. The results show that NiO particles are dispersed in the Ti coatings, and the NiO concentration in the inner layer of the coatings is higher than in the outer layer. With the addition of NiO in the NiO/Ti coating, the ductility is deteriorated and the thickness is reduced of the NiO/Ti coatings. The films with NiO/TiO2/Ti composite microstructure are obtained by the oxidation of NiO/Ti coatings. Photocatalytic efficiency of the films is obviously enhanced with the help of the p-n junction heterostructure in the NiO/TiO2 films. The optimum content of NiO is about 13 %, and the degradation rate of methyl orange solution reaches the maximum value of 88.44 %.

  • Fast and slow interface traps in transparent NiO gated AlGaN/GaN heterostructure field-effect transistors

    摘要: In the present study, the reliability of transparent NiO gated AlGaN/GaN heterostructure field-effect transistors have been investigated. Compared with the TiN Schottky gated device, the p-NiO electrode can suppress the gate leakage and shift the threshold voltage positively. Pulse-mode and temperature-dependent current-voltage measurements demonstrate that both kinds of devices present good stability. The frequency-dependent conductance measurement confirms that only fast trap is detected for the TiN gated device while both fast and slow traps for the NiO gated one. The slow trap is ascribed to the hole trapping in the type-II staggered band configuration between NiO and AlGaN/GaN, which is also confirmed from the obvious threshold voltage instability in high frequency loop scan curves.

  • Adsorption Dynamics of Redox Active Species onto Polarized Surfaces of Sensitized NiO

    摘要: Mesoporous NiO films were deposited by means of a screen printing technique onto fluorine-doped tin oxide transparent electrodes and consequently sensitized with Erythrosin B (EryB) dye. The obtained colored NiO material was used as a working electrode in a three-electrode cell to study the evolution of the triple semiconductor/dye/electrolyte interface upon electrochemical polarization in dark conditions. The electrolyte was a solution of I3?/I? in acetonitrile, with the redox couple representing the typical redox shuttle of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The adopted electrochemical conditions were devised in order to simulate the actual electrical environment of the NiO/dye photocathode in a light-soaked DSC. The use of a benchmark sensitizer EryB and of the most widely used redox mediator I3?/I? is particularly meaningful for the study of the adsorption dynamics and the determination of possible degradative phenomena on the basis of the behavior of numerous analogue systems. Therefore, for the first time, the evolution of the NiO/EryB/I3?/I? multiple interface was investigated combining the electrochemical characterization with ex situ spectroscopic analysis by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The resulting picture shows that EryB in the immobilized state promotes the redox processes based on the I3?/I? couple. Moreover, the EryB sensitizer inhibits the phenomena of recombination between the metal oxide semiconductor and the redox couple.

  • Photoregeneration of Biomimetic Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Analogues via a Dye-Sensitized Approach

    摘要: Two-step photochemical reduction of an acridinium-based cation 2O+ to the corresponding anion 2O? was investigated using a dye-sensitized approach involving 2O+?COOH attached to the surface of a wide-bandgap semiconductor, p-NiO. The cation 2O+ and corresponding one-electron reduced radical form, 2O? were synthesized and characterized using steady-state UV/vis and electron paramagnectic resonance spectroscopy. The thermodynamics for the photoinduced hole injection from 2O+ and 2O? were evaluated and found to be favorable. Subsequent femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy was utilized to evaluate the photoinduced hole injection into NiO, starting from 2O+?COOH/NiO and 2O??COOH/NiO samples. The excitation of 2O+?COOH at 620 nm initiated fast (2.8 ps) hole injection into NiO. However, 90% of the charge-separated population recombined within ~40 ps, while ~10% of the charge-separated population exhibited lifetimes longer than the time scale of our instrument (1.6 ns). In the case of 2O??COOH/NiO, the light absorption occurs predominantly by NiO (2O??COOH absorbs at 310 nm) and is associated with the electron transfer from the conduction band of NiO to the radical. The charge-separated state in this case appears to be long-lived, based on the slow (ns) growth of the trapped carriers formed on the NiO surface. The results of this work indicate that the photochemical reduction of 2O+ to the corresponding hydride form (2OH) can be achieved, opening the possibility of using such a dye-sensitized approach for regeneration of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide analogues in enzymatic and chemical catalysis.

  • Phase separation and transformation of binary immiscible systems in molten core-derived optical fibers

    摘要: This work studies phase-separated ?bers in the CaO–SiO2 and NiO–SiO2 systems. The nature of the phase-separated microstructures and underlying phase equilibria are discussed, including dimensionality, composition, and phase formation as well as the realization of ferrimagnetic behavior in the NiO–SiO2 ?bers based on the formation of metallic Ni inclusions. In addition to understanding the composition/processing relationships in these systems, the work represents a step forward toward novel magneto-optic ?bers. It is important to understand the underlying materials science in order to advance the properties of novel optical ?bers possessing engineered heterogeneities in the core.
