Enhancing the performance of photo-bioelectrochemical fuel cell using graphene oxide/cobalt/polypyrrole composite modified photo-biocathode in the presence of antibiotic
摘要: Photo-bioelectrochemical fuel cell (PBFC) holds a great potential to harvest sustainable electrical energy from wastewater, but low power output limits its applications due to poor electrochemical performance of photo-biocathode. Additionally, antibiotics are ubiquitous in wastewater streams, but little is known regarding their effects on photo-biocathode performance of the PBFC. This study attempted to increase power output of PBFC through improvement of the photo-biocathode performance by modifying the biocathode with graphene oxide/cobalt/polypyrrole (GO/Co/PPy) composite in the presence of oxytetracycline. The GO/Co/PPy composite modified electrode fabricated by one-step electropolymerization method exhibited more excellent catalytic activity toward oxygen reduction compared to Co-alone and Co/PPy modified electrode. The PBFC with GO/Co/PPy composite modified biocathode produced a maximum power density of 19 mW/m2, which was almost 4-fold higher than that produced with the bare biocathode (4.9 mW/m2) due to improved bio-electrocatalytic performance of the bicathode by the GO/Co/PPy composite. The maximum power density of the PBFC was further increased 4.6 (105.5 mW/m2), 3.7 (88.7 mW/m2), 2.9 (74.6 mW/m2) and 1.9 (56 mW/m2) fold by exposure to 5, 10, 20, and 50 mg/L OTC, respectively. The further increases in power was due to reduced cathode's charge transfer resistance using degradation products of OTC as mediators and OTC-stimulated growth of species with extracellular electron transfer ability. However, the photosynthesis and growth of alga was negatively affected by OTC concentration higher than 10 mg/L, resulting performance deterioration of bicathode.

Exploring Lewis-Base Effects to Improve the Efficiency of [Co(bpy)3]2+/3+-Mediated Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells
摘要: The state-of-the-art cobalt(II/III) tris(bipyridyl) redox shuttles open a chapter for pursuing highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Previous work has demonstrated that light exposure of the Co(III) along with the Lewis base additive, tert-butylpyridine (TBP) effectively improves the solar cell efficiency. With this as platform, a new Lewis base—tert-butylpyridine N-oxide (TBP-O) is introduced as an electrolyte co-additive instead of TBP alone. The resulting D35-sensitized solar cells exhibit an efficiency of 6.6% at full solar illumination, which further increases to 8.1% by exposing the new electrolyte mixture to the light and thus outperforms typical Li+-containing DSSCs. A mechanism with regard to the interactions between Co(III) and Lewis base additives supported by electrochemical and spectroscopic studies, is suggested to explain the performance improvement. The study illustrates negative effects of TBP on the charge- and mass-transfer kinetics at the electrode/electrolyte interface and reveals that the effects are eliminated by a light-induced reaction between Co(III) and TBP-O.

The improved performance and mechanism of solution-processed blue PhOLEDs based on double electron transport layers
摘要: Performance improved solution-processed blue phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) are demonstrated by adopting a double electron transport layer (ETL) strategy, which consists of TPBi and an additional Alq3 ETL. With the help of Alq3 ETL, the performance of the optimal device with a double ETL is significantly enhanced. The maximum luminance of OLEDs is improved from 6787 cd m?2 to 13 054 cd m?2, and the maximum current efficiency is increased from 3.9 cd A?1 to 11.4 cd A?1. Furthermore, the difference of carrier injection in the two types of PhOLEDs is explored by using the transient electroluminescence measurement method. The results imply that double ETL can help to balance electron injection and carrier transport, reduce the interface charge accumulation, leading to a high efficiency. The PL decay of the emission layer with different ETL is detected to analyze the effect of the introduced second ETL layer and the interface on the exciton decay of the emission layer. The results show that the introduced interface in devices with a double ETL has an adverse effect on the exciton emission, which contributes to the serious efficiency roll-off of devices with a double ETL.
