摘要: We experimentally demonstrate a microring-type magneto-optical (MO) switch with a-Si:H waveguides on a garnet substrate. By controlling the direction of the external current induced magnetic field, an extinction ratio of 9 dB was achieved.

摘要: We report a high-linearity silicon electro-optic modulator based on single ring-assisted Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI). The best spurious-free dynamic range of third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3) is 109 dB·Hz2/3. The linearity is comparable to the commercial lithium niobate modulators. The device can find potential applications in microwave photonic systems.

Hyperuniform disordered waveguides and devices for near infrared silicon photonics
摘要: We introduce a hyperuniform-disordered platform for the realization of near-infrared photonic devices on a silicon-on-insulator platform, demonstrating the functionality of these structures in a flexible silicon photonics integrated circuit platform unconstrained by crystalline symmetries. The designs proposed advantageously leverage the large, complete, and isotropic photonic band gaps provided by hyperuniform disordered structures. An integrated design for a compact, sub-volt, sub-fJ/bit, hyperuniform-clad, electrically controlled resonant optical modulator suitable for fabrication in the silicon photonics ecosystem is presented along with simulation results. We also report results for passive device elements, including waveguides and resonators, which are seamlessly integrated with conventional silicon-on-insulator strip waveguides and vertical couplers. We show that the hyperuniform-disordered platform enables improved compactness, enhanced energy efficiency, and better temperature stability compared to the silicon photonics devices based on rib and strip waveguides.

The usage of integrated microwave photonics in optically supported wireless networks can provide a high-capacity mobile system based on the micro-wave and millimeter-wave frequency bands.

Combining Harmonic Laser Beams by Fiber Components for Refractivity-Compensating Two-Color Interferometry
摘要: A perfect spatial overlap with multiple beams of different wavelengths is a prerequisite for multi–wavelength interferometry. Beam combination with the help of ?bers seems to be an interesting method for this. We investigated three different types of ?ber components, multi–mode wavelength division multiplexers (MM–WDMs), single–mode wavelength division multiplexers (SM–WDMs) and endlessly single–mode polarization maintaining photonic crystal ?bers (PM–PCFs). All three seem potential candidates for a perfect spatial overlap of laser beams separated by an octave, i.e. fundamental and harmonic beams. We performed an experimental study on the impact of these components on polarization, wavefront, and coherence. These properties are essential for high–accuracy interferometry. As a test system, we used the fundamental and second harmonic beam of a Nd:YAG laser system at 1064 nm and 532 nm as a popular system in two–color interferometry for intrinsic refractive index compensation. The experimental results show the potential of PM–PCFs for this challenging application.

摘要: Silicon photonics has attracted much attention because of the CMOS compatibility, high integrated density, etc. However, silicon is not a good option for active photonic integrated devices due to its indirect-bandgap structure. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as graphene and black phosphorus (BP), exhibit excellent optical and electronic properties, and thus provide a potential option for realizing active photonic integrated devices on silicon. In this paper, we present our recent works on silicon/2D-materials photonic integrated devices for photodetection and thermal-tuning.

Opportunities for photonic integrated circuits in optical gas sensors
摘要: In this article, the potential of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for modern gas sensing applications is discussed. Optical detection systems can be found at the high-end of the currently available gas detectors, and PIC-based optical spectroscopic devices promise a significant reduction in size and cost. The performance of such devices is reviewed here. This discussion is not limited to one semiconductor platform, but includes several available platforms operating from the visible wavelength range up to the long wavelength infrared. The different platforms are evaluated regarding their capabilities in creating a fully integrated spectroscopic setup, including light source, interaction cell and detection unit. Advanced spectroscopy methods are assessed regarding their PIC compatibility. Based on the comparison of PICs with state-of-the-art bulk optical devices, it can be concluded that they can fill the application space of compact and low cost optical gas sensors.
