  • Rela??es empíricas entre características dendrométricas da Caatinga brasileira e dados TM Landsat 5

摘要: The objective of this work was to adjust models to estimate dendrometric characteristics of the Brazilian dry tropical forest (Caatinga) from Landsat 5 TM sensor data. Measures for tree diameter and height were taken in 60 inventory plots (400 m2), in two municipalities of the state of Sergipe, Brazil. Basal area and wood volume were estimated using an allometric equation and form factor (f = 0.9). Explanatory variables were taken from the TM sensor, after radiometric and geometric correction, having considered, in the analysis, six spectral bands, with 30 m spatial resolution, besides the indexes of simple ratio (SR), of normalized difference vegetation (NDVI), and of soil-adjusted vegetation (Savi). To choose the best explanatory variables, the coefficient of determination (R2), the root mean square error (RMSE), and the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) were considered. The basal area per hectare did not show a significant correlation with any of the explanatory variables used. The best models were adjusted to tree mean height per plot (R2 = 0.4; RMSE = 13%) and to wood volume per hectare (R2 = 0.6; RMSE = 42%). The metrics derived from the Landsat 5 TM sensor have great potential to explain variation in the mean height of trees and in the wood volume per hectare, in remaining areas of the tropical dry forest in the Brazilian Northeast.

  • Estimation of Aboveground Biomass Using Manual Stereo Viewing of Digital Aerial Photographs in Tropical Seasonal Forest

摘要: The objectives of this study are to: (1) evaluate accuracy of tree height measurements of manual stereo viewing on a computer display using digital aerial photographs compared with airborne LiDAR height measurements; and (2) develop an empirical model to estimate stand-level aboveground biomass with variables derived from manual stereo viewing on the computer display in a Cambodian tropical seasonal forest. We evaluate observation error of tree height measured from the manual stereo viewing, based on field measurements. RMSEs of tree height measurement with manual stereo viewing and LiDAR were 1.96 m and 1.72 m, respectively. Then, stand-level aboveground biomass is regressed against tree height indices derived from the manual stereo viewing. We determined the best model to estimate aboveground biomass in terms of the Akaike’s information criterion. This was a model of mean tree height of the tallest five trees in each plot (R2 = 0.78; RMSE = 58.18 Mg/ha). In conclusion, manual stereo viewing on the computer display can measure tree height accurately and is useful to estimate aboveground stand biomass.

  • Combined Use of Optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar Data for REDD+ Applications in Malawi

摘要: Recent developments in satellite data availability allow tropical forest monitoring to expand in two ways: (1) dense time series foster the development of new methods for mapping and monitoring dry tropical forests and (2) the combination of optical data and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data reduces the problems resulting from frequent cloud cover and yields additional information. This paper covers both issues by analyzing the possibilities of using optical (Sentinel-2) and SAR (Sentinel-1) time series data for forest and land cover mapping for REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) applications in Malawi. The challenge is to combine these different data sources in order to make optimal use of their complementary information content. We compare the results of using different input data sets as well as of two methods for data combination. Results show that time-series of optical data lead to better results than mono-temporal optical data (+8% overall accuracy for forest mapping). Combination of optical and SAR data leads to further improvements: +5% in overall accuracy for land cover and +1.5% for forest mapping. With respect to the tested combination methods, the data-based combination performs slightly better (+1% overall accuracy) than the result-based Bayesian combination.

  • Estimation of Voxel-Based Above-Ground Biomass Using Airborne LiDAR Data in an Intact Tropical Rain Forest, Brunei

摘要: The advancement of LiDAR technology has enabled more detailed evaluations of forest structures. The so-called “Volumetric pixel (voxel)” has emerged as a new comprehensive approach. The purpose of this study was to estimate plot-level above-ground biomass (AGB) in different plot sizes of 20 m × 20 m and 30 m × 30 m, and to develop a regression model for AGB prediction. Both point cloud-based (PCB) and voxel-based (VB) metrics were used to maximize the efficiency of low-density LiDAR data within a dense forest. Multiple regression model AGB prediction performance was found to be greatest in the 30 m × 30 m plots, with R2, adjusted R2, and standard deviation values of 0.92, 0.87, and 35.13 Mg·ha?1, respectively. Five out of the eight selected independent variables were derived from VB metrics and the other three were derived from PCB metrics. Validation of accuracy yielded RMSE and NRMSE values of 27.8 Mg·ha?1 and 9.2%, respectively, which is a reasonable estimate for this structurally complex intact forest that has shown high NRMSE values in previous studies. This voxel-based approach enables a greater understanding of complex forest structure and is expected to contribute to the advancement of forest carbon quantification techniques.
