  • Enhanced Second Harmonic Generation from Ferroelectric HfO <sub/>2</sub> -Based Hybrid Metasurfaces

    摘要: Integrated nonlinear metasurfaces leading to high-efficiency optical second harmonic generation (SHG) are highly desirable for optical sensing, imaging, and quantum photonic systems. Compared to traditional metal-only metasurfaces, their hybrid counterparts, where a non-centrosymmetric nonlinear photonic material is incorporated in the near field of a metasurface, they can significantly boost SHG efficiency. However, it is difficult to integrate such devices on-chip due to material incompatibilities, thickness scaling challenges and the narrow band gaps of nonlinear optical materials. Here, we demonstrate significantly enhanced SHG in on-chip integrated metasurfaces by using nanometer thin films of ferroelectric Y:HfO2. This material has the merit of CMOS compatibility, ultra-violet transparency up to 250 nm and significant scalability down to sub 10 nm when deposited on silicon. We observe a twenty times magnitude enhancement of the SHG intensity from the hybrid metasurface compared to a bare ferroelectric HfO2 thin film. Moreover, a 3-fold SHG enhancement is observed from the hybrid metasurface compared to a control structure using non-ferroelectric HfO2, demonstrating a major contribution to the SHG signal from ferroelectric Y:HfO2. The effective second-order nonlinear optical coefficient χ(2) of Y:HfO2 is determined to be 6.0 ± 0.5 pm/V, which is comparable to other complex nonlinear photonic oxide materials. Our work provides a general pathway to build an efficient on-chip nanophotonic nonlinear light source for SHG using ferroelectric HfO2 thin films.

  • Synthesis of Pyridazine Derivatives by Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling Reaction and Evaluation of Their Optical and Electronic Properties through Experimental and Theoretical Studies

    摘要: A series of π-conjugated molecules, based on pyridazine and thiophene heterocycles 3a–e, were synthesized using commercially, or readily available, coupling components, through a palladium catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. The electron-deficient pyridazine heterocycle was functionalized by a thiophene electron-rich heterocycle at position six, and different (hetero)aromatic moieties (phenyl, thienyl, furanyl) were functionalized with electron acceptor groups at position three. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to obtain information on the conformation, electronic structure, electron distribution, dipolar moment, and molecular nonlinear response of the synthesized push-pull pyridazine derivatives. Hyper-Rayleigh scattering in 1,4-dioxane solutions, using a fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm, was used to evaluate their second-order nonlinear optical properties. The thienylpyridazine functionalized with the cyano-phenyl moiety exhibited the largest first hyperpolarizability (β = 175 × 10?30 esu, using the T convention) indicating its potential as a second harmonic generation (SHG) chromophore.

  • Nonlinear Plasmonic Sensing for Label-Free and Selective Detection of Mercury at Picomolar Level

    摘要: We present the concept of a nonlinear plasmonic sensing approach for rapid, sensitive, and label-free detection of mercury. Nonlinear plasmonic sensing of mercury relies on a systematic combination of nonlinear optics (NLO) with well-known concepts of amalgamation chemistry and plasmonic properties of gold nanorods. Exploiting the extreme sensitivity of the NLO process toward Hg-induced change in the local electric field of plasmonic nanorods, we succeed in improving the limit of detection (LOD) of mercury by 2?3 orders of magnitude as compared to the commonly used linear localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) based sensing. Using our method, an LOD of as low as 58 pM (11 ppt) has been achieved with high selectivity. Nonlinear plasmonic sensing approach is found to work excellently for detecting mercury in real samples like blood plasma.

  • Maturation of the Meniscal Collagen Structure Revealed by Polarization-Resolved and Directional Second Harmonic Generation Microscopy

    摘要: We report polarization-resolved Second Harmonic Generation (p-SHG) and directional SHG (forward and backward, F/B) measurements of equine foetal and adult collagen in meniscus, over large field-of-views using sample-scanning. Large differences of collagen structure and fibril orientation with maturation are revealed, validating the potential for this novel methodology to track such changes in meniscal structure. The foetal menisci had a non-organized and more random collagen fibrillar structure when compared with adult using P-SHG. For the latter, clusters of homogeneous fibril orientation (inter-fibrillar areas) were revealed, separated by thick fibers. F/B SHG showed numerous different features in adults notably, in thick fibers compared to interfibrillar areas, unlike foetal menisci that showed similar patterns for both directions. This work confirms previous studies and improves the understanding of meniscal collagen structure and its maturation, and makes f/B and p-SHG good candidates for future studies aiming at revealing structural modifications to meniscus due to pathologies.

  • Novel report on structural, optical and electrical investigation into brucinium 4-methyl-3-nitrobenzoate 0.5 hydrate single crystal: a promising material for high-power laser, ultrahigh cooling, sensor and detector applications

    摘要: A new brucinium 4-methyl-3-nitrobenzoate 0.5 hydrate (B4M3NB0.5H) NLO single crystal was harvested from saturated solution by solvent evaporation method. Crystal system and symmetric type of B4M3NB0.5H compound were analyzed by structure analysis. Linear optical parameters of title compound were discussed in detail by UV–visible analysis. Lifetime values of the molecule were quanti?ed by ?uorescence study, and it con?rms the good crystalline perfection of the grown crystal. The SHG ef?ciency is 5.11 times superior to the KDP material. By utilizing Nd:YAG laser as an input, SLDT measurement of the crystal was done. The grown crystal has good crystalline nature which is analyzed by HRXRD study. Dielectric behavior of B4M3NB0.5H crystal was discussed in detail. With the help of theoretical approach, few of the solid-state parameters were calculated and listed. Piezoelectric charge coef?cient and piezovoltage were calculated to be 4.5 p C/N and 0.0417 p V m/N, respectively. The TGA and DTA spectrum con?rms that the title compound is thermally stable up to 101 °C.

  • Photo-induced meta-stable polar conformations in polystyrene microspheres revealed by time-resolved SHG microscopy

    摘要: Photo-induced second harmonic generation (SHG) was observed in centrosymmetric polystyrene (PS) microspheres using 1064 nm, sub-nanosecond laser-pulse irradiation. The SHG signal gradually increased upon stationary laser-pulse irradiation. After stopping the irradiation, the increased SHG signal disappeared in approximately 30 min. When the PS bead was irradiated by laser pulses again, the SHG signal reappeared with similar temporal behavior, which was attributed to the probable growth and contraction of meta-stable polar conformations of PS chain segments under periodic photo-thermal stimuli.

  • Enhancement of the second harmonic signal of nonlinear crystals by self-assembled gold nanoparticles

    摘要: In second harmonic generation (SHG), the energy of two incoming photons, e.g., from a femtosecond laser, can be combined in one outgoing photon of twice the energy, e.g., by means of a nonlinear crystal. The SHG efficiency, however, is limited. In this work, the harvested signal is maximized by composing a hybrid system consisting of a nonlinear crystal with a dense coverage of plasmonic nanostructures separated by narrow gaps. The method of self-assembled diblock-copolymer-based micellar lithography with subsequent electroless deposition is employed to cover the whole surface of a lithium niobate (LiNbO3) crystal. The interaction of plasmonic nanostructures with light leads to a strong electric near-field in the adjacent crystal. This near-field is harnessed to enhance the near-surface SHG signal from the nonlinear crystal. At the plasmon resonance of the gold nanoparticles, a pronounced enhancement of about 60-fold SHG is observed compared to the bare crystal within the confocal volume of a laser spot.

  • A Report on Growth And Spectroscopic Studies on The L-Tartaric Acid Doped Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate Non-Linear Optical Single Crystals

    摘要: In recent years study of non-linear optical (NLO) materials is gaining rapid momentum due to their needs in several device applications. Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate (KDP) is a well-known NLO material, whose non-linearity is enhanced by doping with amino acids. In this present study, single crystal of L-Tartaric acid doped potassium Dihydrogen phosphate (LTKDP) have been grown by slow evaporation method at room temperature. Good quality transparent crystals were obtained with 27-30 days. The crystallinity and cell parameters were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), the shifts in frequency assignments of various functional groups of KDP due to the addition of L-Tartaric acid was analysed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Fourier transform Raman spectroscopic studies. The dielectric constant and the dielectric loss of the single crystals were studied as a function of frequency. Kurtz- Perry power technique was employed to determine the Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) efficiency of LTKDP single crystal.

  • Investigation on growth, physico-chemical properties, density functional theory and anti-microbial studies of a new organic acentric NLO crystal: Bis (2-aminobenzimidazolium) phthalate

    摘要: Highly transparent NLO crystal bis (2-aminobenzimidazolium) phthalate (B2ABP) was successfully grown by solvent evaporation method. The lattice parameters and crystalline nature were confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies. The FT-IR and Raman spectrum were used to assert the various functional groups present in title compound. NMR studies evidently portray the molecular structure of the grown crystals. A UV study shows the high transmittance range of B2ABP crystal. Photoluminescence study shows sharp emission peak. The mechanical stability of the grown crystal was investigated by Vickers microhardness test. Etching studies were carried for the grown crystal. The dielectric studies have been carried out as a function of frequency at different temperatures. SHG efficiency was found to be 1.9 times greater than that of standard KDP. Laser damage threshold value for B2ABP was found to be 2.2 GW/cm2. Melting point of B2ABP was studied by means of TG-DTA studies. HOMO-LUMO energy gap and first order hyperpolarizability value was theoretically predicted. The anti-microbial activity of B2ABP was determined.

  • Nonlinear Optical Properties of CdS Semiconductor nanowires

    摘要: In this work, we report on the nonlinear optical properties in single Cadmium sulfide nanowires (CdS NWs). The high qulity growth of CdS semiconductor nanowires were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The as-obtained products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) , Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the energy dispersive X-ray spectrom (EDS) was used to determine the specific elemental distribution and show purity of the CdS semiconductor nanowires . The excitation of femtosecond laser(800 nm, 50 fs, 80 MHz) was used to study the nonlinear optical properties of CdS nanowires, such as the Second Harmonic Generation(SHG) and optical waveguide effect. CdS NW has a second harmonic generation with a blue emission bands at a wavelength of 400 nm . Finally, based on the dark field image of the CCD taken and combined with the spectrum, it is proved that CdS NW has an optical waveguide effect.
