  • A comparison of microstructure and mechanical properties of laser cladding and laser-induction hybrid cladding coatings on full-scale rail

    摘要: With the rapid development of high-speed and heavy-haul trains, the surface damages of rails are becoming more and more severe, and how to promote the surface strength of the rail and prolong its service life with high efficiency are becoming extremely important. Laser cladding (LC), with small heat affected zone (HAZ) and low dilution, is a promising novel way to hardface and repair the rail. However, there are two great barriers for the traditional LC to apply on full-scale rails: one is how to prevent the coating from cracking under the rapid heating and cooling cycle; the other is how to eliminate the martensite structure in HAZ, which may threaten the safety of railway transportation due to its high hardness and low fracture toughness and usually be forbidden in almost all the Railway Standards over the world. In this paper, laser-induction hybrid cladding (LIHC) was innovatively proposed to deposit Ni-based coatings on a full-scale rail. The cracking behaviors, microstructures and mechanical properties of the coatings and HAZs by LC, LIHC with induction pre-heating (pre-LIHC) and LIHC with induction post-heating (post-LIHC) were studied systemically. The results indicate that the cracking and martensite transformation occurred in the HAZ can only be prevented by post-LIHC, where fine pearlite with smaller pearlite block size and lower interlamellar spacing formed instead. Therefore, the abrupt change of microstructure and mechanical properties in the HAZ could be avoided by post-LIHC, and the hardness, strength and toughness of the rails can be improved significantly. The post-LIHC technology shows the potentiality to hardface and repair the full-scale rail.

  • Multi-scale ordering in highly stretchable polymer semiconducting films

    摘要: Stretchable semiconducting polymers have been developed as a key component to enable skin-like wearable electronics, but their electrical performance must be improved to enable more advanced functionalities. Here, we report a solution processing approach that can achieve multi-scale ordering and alignment of conjugated polymers in stretchable semiconductors to substantially improve their charge carrier mobility. Using solution shearing with a patterned microtrench coating blade, macroscale alignment of conjugated-polymer nanostructures was achieved along the charge transport direction. In conjunction, the nanoscale spatial confinement aligns chain conformation and promotes short-range π–π ordering, substantially reducing the energetic barrier for charge carrier transport. As a result, the mobilities of stretchable conjugated-polymer films have been enhanced up to threefold and maintained under a strain up to 100%. This method may also serve as the basis for large-area manufacturing of stretchable semiconducting films, as demonstrated by the roll-to-roll coating of metre-scale films.

  • An Insight into the Mechanisms of the Scale Inhibition. A Case Study of a Novel Task-specific Fluorescent-tagged Scale Inhibitor Location on Gypsum Crystals

    摘要: Scaling in reverse osmosis facilities, boilers, heat exchangers, evaporation plants, and oilfield applications is a serious problem worldwide. In order to provide a new insight into the mechanism of the scale formation and inhibition, a novel fluorescent-tagged 1-hydroxy-7-(6-methoxy-1,3-dioxo-1H-benzo[de]isoquinolin-2(3H)-yl)heptane-1,1-diyl-di(phosphonic acid), (HEDP-F) was synthesized and applied for the fluorescent microscope visualization of gypsum crystals formation in supersaturated aqueous solutions. The visualization of HEDP-F location at gypsum crystals, has demonstrated that the bisphosphonate molecules do not act as they are expected to do according to the current scale inhibition theory. At ambient temperature the gypsum macrocrystals are found to form, and then to grow without visible sorption of bisphosphonate on the crystal edges or any other gypsum crystal growth centers. A tentative nonconventional mechanism of scale inhibition in the bulk supersaturated aqueous solutions of gypsum is proposed.

  • Large-scale fabrication of highly elastic conductors on a broad range of surfaces

    摘要: Recently, a great stretchability progress has been witnessed in elastic electronics. However, such electronics are either costly, toxic, or cannot pattern on a broad range of substrates which limit their large-scale fabrications and applications. Here, to overcome those limitations, an ink comprising liquid metal particles and desirable polymer solutions is developed. The polymer solutions in our ink can be adjusted to print on different surfaces and avoid toxic organic solvents in most cases. The ink can be sintered by small strain (~10%) in room temperature. Using our ink, conductors with high stretchability (380,000 S/m at a strain of 1000%) can be printed in low consumption (liquid metal consumption 3.27 mg/cm2), in large area (bestrew entire surface of a T-shirt) and in high throughputs (~105 cm2 per hour). The ink can be printed on a T-shirt to achieve a smart wearable platform that integrates electronics for strain/electrophysiology/electrochemistry detection, and temperature monitoring/controlling.

  • Wafer-scale Fabrication of Nitrogen-doped Reduced Graphene Oxide with Enhanced Quaternary-N for High-Performance Photodetection

    摘要: We demonstrated a simple and scalable fabrication route of nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) photodetector on 8-inch wafer-scale. The N-rGO was prepared through in-situ plasma-treatment in an acetylene-ammonia atmosphere to achieve n-type semiconductor with substantial formation of quaternary-N substituted into the graphene lattice. The morphology, structural, chemical composition and electrical properties of the N-rGO was carefully characterized and being used for the device fabrication. The N-rGO devices were fabricated in a simple metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) structure with unconventional metal-on-bottom configuration to promote high-performance photodetection. The N-rGO devices exhibited enhanced photoresponsivity as high as 0.68 A W?1 at 1.0 V, which is about two orders of magnitude higher compared to a pristine graphene and wide-band photo-induced response from visible to near-infrared (NIR) region with increasing sensitivity in the order of 785 nm, 632.8 nm and 473 nm excitation wavelengths. We also further demonstrated a symmetric characteristic of photo-induced response to any position of local laser excitation with respect to the electrodes. The excellent features of wafer-scale N-rGO devices suggest a promising route to merge the current silicon technology and two-dimensional materials for future optoelectronic devices.

    摘要: Efficiency, distinctiveness and robustness are three main goals for feature extractors in application of texture classification. In this paper, a new feature extractor is designed which aims to achieve these three goals simultaneously. The contributions are threefold. Firstly, a tree-shaped multi-scale sampling structure is proposed to acquire points distributed along two circles and one octagon. Secondly, four histogram vectors are obtained by quantizing the sampling values through a hybrid strategy. In order to suppress the noise, mean filtering is used as a preprocessing step and the four vectors are concatenated to form the discriminant vector. Thirdly, experiments are conducted on different datasets with several well-known feature extractors. The results show that the proposed method improves the classification accuracy effectively and robustly, while has a moderate complexity.     摘要: Although the digital camera is readily available and the price is decreasing, many users still consider it an expensive device that can be dispensed with by using a smartphone camera. However, both the digital camera and the smartphone need to be calibrated to extract three dimensional (3D) space information from (2D) and to obtain accurate results. This study used close range photogrammetry to calibrate two high resolution digital cameras and a Samsung Galaxy smartphone to find whether any one of them give high accuracy 3D coordinates of the retro-reflective targets that were determined using the self-calibration bundle adjustment method in two phases. The first phase is during walking when 3 trials are conducted. The same three cameras are used for each trial. The second phase is during standing when one trial is conducted. Each of the camera types is placed in front of the platform. The results showed that arguably, the Samsung Galaxy S6 camera is most significant than other cameras in term of accuracy. In addition, this study provides information on how to calibrate one board from other board that has already been calibrated.

    摘要: This paper provides experimental results of a utility-scale (500 kW) solar PV inverter during simulated grid disturbances. This device was tested using simulations of system voltage during simulated distribution and transmission faults, and voltage records that were collected during the Blue Cut Fire Event. The methods used for testing the three different scenarios of grid disturbances are detailed and the test setup is described. Additionally, the test results for each of the grid events are provided and an analysis of the test results is given. The test results show that the tested PV inverter's response to grid disturbances depends in part on the fault-induced phase shift and harmonic content of the system voltage. These factors can impact the inverters ability to accurately calculate system frequency and can cause erroneous tripping on miscalculated frequency. The information provided in this paper can inform utilities, manufacturers, developers, and system planners of the potential performance of solar PV inverters during grid events.

  • Multi-source Remote Sensing Image Registration Based on Contourlet Transform and Multiple Feature Fusion

    摘要: Image registration is an indispensable component in multi-source remote sensing image processing. In this paper, we put forward a remote sensing image registration method by including an improved multi-scale and multi-direction Harris algorithm and a novel compound feature. Multi-scale circle Gaussian combined invariant moments and multi-direction gray level co-occurrence matrix are extracted as features for image matching. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on numerous multi-source remote sensor images with noise and illumination changes. Extensive experimental studies prove that our proposed method is capable of receiving stable and even distribution of key points as well as obtaining robust and accurate correspondence matches. It is a promising scheme in multi-source remote sensing image registration.

  • Performance Evaluation of Short Parabolic Trough Collectors Integrated with a Small-Scale Solar Power and Heating System

    摘要: An investigation is presented on the performance of a small-scale solar power and heating system with short parabolic trough collectors (PTCs). The steady-state model of the short PTCs is evaluated with outside experiments. The model mainly contains the heat loss of the receiver, the peak optical efficiency and the incident angle factor consisting of incident angle modifier and end loss. It is found that the end loss effect is essential in this model when the length of the PTCs is less than 48 m, especially in the winter. The standard deviation of the steady-state model is 1.4%. Moreover, the potential energy efficiency ratio of the solar power and heating system is considerably larger than the coefficient of performance (COP) of general air-source heat pumps, and increases with the decrease of the condensation temperature. An overall system efficiency of 49% can be reached. Lastly, the existence of a water storage tank improves the flexibility of heating the building, and the volume of the water storage tank decreases with the increase of the heating water temperature.
