  • Sorting of micron-sized particles using holographic optical Raman tweezers in aqueous medium

    摘要: We have constructed a holographic optical tweezers system combined with Raman spectroscopy to sort trapped particles. Our software automatically moves the trapped objects to the measurement positions to obtain individual Raman signals from multiple trapped particles. We performed the sorting by comparing their spectra with the previously measured training dataset using the correlation coefficients. We used yeast cells and polystyrene beads as test particles. This study aims to show that biological particles can be separated using single cell analysis with combined holographic optical tweezers and Raman spectroscopy system.

  • Raman profile alterations of irradiated human nasopharyngeal cancer cells detected with laser tweezer Raman spectroscopy

    摘要: Radiotherapy has been widely used for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) treatment, which causes DNA damage and alterations of macromolecules of cancer cells. However, the Raman profile alterations of irradiated NPC cells remain unclear. In the present study, we used laser tweezers Raman spectroscopy (LTRS) to monitor internal structural changes and chemical modifications in NPC cells after exposure at a clinical dose (2.3 Gy) to X-ray irradiation (IR) at a single-cell level. Two types of NPC cell lines, CNE2 (EBV-negative cell line) and C666-1 (EBV-positive cell line), were used. The Raman spectra of cells before and after radiation treatment were recorded by LTRS. The analysis of spectral differences indicated that the IR caused Raman profile alterations of intracellular proteins, DNA base and lipids. Moreover, by using the multivariate statistical analysis including principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) algorithm, an accuracy of 90.0% for classification between CNE2 cells before and after IR could be achieved, which was 10% better than that of C666-1 cells. The results demonstrated that CNE2 cells were more sensitive to IR in comparison to C666-1 cells, providing useful information for creating a treatment strategy in clinical practice. This exploratory study suggested that LTRS combined with multivariate statistical analysis would be a novel and effective tool for evaluating the radiotherapeutic effect on tumor cells, and for detection of the corresponding alterations at the molecular level.

  • Statistical sensorless short-circuit fault detection algorithm for photovoltaic arrays

    摘要: One of the main challenges for the conventional protection system of a photovoltaic (PV) array is the occurrence of light fault conditions including a low location mismatch fault, a fault with a high fault path resistance, and a fault under low solar irradiance because the fault current increment is not enough for triggering current-based protective devices. The operation of the maximum power point tracking system and utilizing blocking diodes may also result in a light fault condition. An undetected fault condition causes a potential ?re hazard and energy loss. This paper proposes a waveshape based statistical fault detection algorithm for light fault detection. The proposed algorithm quanti?es the waveshape tailedness of superimposed PV array power by the kurtosis function. The proposed algorithm is able to discriminate the light fault condition from severe partial shading and is also effective for open-circuit faults. In addition to no need for additional sensors, it does not require a training dataset and prior information about the PV array. The merits of the proposed algorithm are corroborated through several case studies on a simulation model of a test PV array considering the parameter uncertainty and the presence of noise in the signals.

  • Effect of initial surface topography during laser polishing process: Statistical analysis

    摘要: Surface finish is one of the most important quality characteristics of fabricated components. Laser polishing (LP) is one of the advanced manufacturing surface finishing techniques that has been recently developed and successfully employed for improving surface quality without deteriorating the overall structural form through surface smoothing by melting and redistributing a thin layer of molten material. This paper advances the statistical analysis of the LP process emphasizing aspects of the effect of the initial surface topography. Flat and ground initial surfaces are used for comparative statistical analysis of initial and polished profiles obtained experimentally. Their profile geometries and surface quality characteristics, such as, roughness, were compared and analyzed. In addition, LP process was experimentally investigated as a thermodynamic operator represented by a transfer function and it was examined by means of a coherence function.

  • On the application of bootstrapping to laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy data

    摘要: The analysis of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) data heavily relies on statistical approaches. Recently, the application of another well-established statistical tool has started gaining prominence in LIBS analysis: bootstrapping. In the present work, we investigate the impact of bootstrapping on LIBS data collected by various data acquisition strategies and provide some insights into the application of this powerful statistical tool. We show that bootstrapping primarily affects the standard deviation of the recorded spectra, while barely affecting the mean values. This limits the applicability of bootstrapping to specific cases which are briefly discussed.

    摘要: In Czochralski monocrystalline silicon growth, structure loss (SL) is the loss of the mono-crystalline structure. It represents a significant loss of productivity. In this work, this phenomenon is investigated by statistical analysis of production data of roughly 14000 ingots produced over a year of time at NorSun factory in ?rdal, Norway. It is found that ingots with structure loss typically have lower heater power and temperature fluctuations than ingots without structure loss after four hours of body (ca. 240 mm). Particularly, ingots without manual adjustment by furnace operator have significantly higher frequency of structure loss than ingots for which the operator has increased the temperature one or more times. Most ingots with structure loss are also found to have a higher pull speed on average than ingots without structure loss, and that there is a threshold below which no ingots had structure loss. A binary logistic regression was used for classification of ingots with and without structure loss and 30% of the data was used to comparison of predictions of the model. Using only the standard deviation of the temperature fluctuations around a moving average provided a prediction accuracy of 99.6%, for ingots that have passed six hours of body (ca. 360 mm).

What is an essential difference between the expert movement and the novice one at where the movement plays important role such as dancing, playing darts, or preparing tea at Japanese tea ceremony? We would like to figure out it from the movement of the human joints at an activity. Which will give us a hint how to improve our behavior. In our study, Structure Sensor, a Kinect-like 3D sensor, is used to track and record 3-dimensional positions of the human joints during an action. The device is portable and does not require any sensors nor markers attached to observed persons. We then investigate the effectiveness of a statistical approach. Results of preliminary experiments established for dancing will be reported.

    摘要: POF commercial active devices present a variety of designs in which fibre coupling is achieved by different connector types. The particular characteristics and tolerances of transmitter and receiver designs are behind the variability of the fibre input and output angular power distributions, and consequently, we suggest that they are the cause of the high standard deviation usually found in POF measurements. Our aim here is to quantify the impact of the variability of the fibre coupling at the injection and the detection ends on transmission parameters of a POF link. We analysed two different source types and proposed a detector model whose parameters are based on experimental measurements. The standard deviations of power loss and frequency response are calculated using the propagation matrix model for the fibre, and also extracted from experimental measurements, revealing the contribution of both launching and detection conditions.

    摘要: Diabetic foot complications are a major cause of concern for diabetic patients as it affects mobility and quality of life. Any computer aided diagnosis system would be very useful in the early detection and hence treatment and cure. For such a system, the surface temperature distribution patterns in the plantar region of the foot of both healthy and diabetic subjects have to be analyzed to detect any abnormality. In this paper we have analyzed the infrared thermal images of 62 diabetic and 20 healthy subjects to identify the temperature distribution patterns capable of detecting diabetic foot complications. The images were taken using Fluke TiX560 thermal imager. Image processing and analysis was done in MATLAB.
