  • Cellular Internalization-Induced Aggregation of Porous Silicon Nanoparticles for Ultrasound Imaging and Protein-Mediated Protection of Stem Cells

    摘要: Nanotechnology employs multifunctional engineered materials in the nanoscale range that provides many opportunities for translational stem cell research and therapy. Here, a cell-penetrating peptide (virus-1 transactivator of transcription)–conjugated, porous silicon nanoparticle (TPSi NP) loaded with the Wnt3a protein to increase both the cell survival rate and the delivery precision of stem cell transplantation via a combinational theranostic strategy is presented. The TPSi NP with a pore size of 10.7 nm and inorganic framework enables high-efficiency loading of Wnt3a, prolongs Wnt3a release, and increases antioxidative stress activity in the labeled mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which are highly beneficial properties for cell protection in stem cell therapy for myocardial infarction. It is confirmed that the intracellular aggregation of TPSi NPs can highly amplify the acoustic scattering of the labeled MSCs, resulting in a 2.3-fold increase in the ultrasound (US) signal compared with that of unlabeled MSCs. The translational potential of the designed nanoagent for real-time US imaging–guided stem cell transplantation is confirmed via intramyocardial injection of labeled MSCs in a nude mouse model. It is proposed that the intracellular aggregation of protein drug–loaded TPSi NPs could be a simple but robust strategy for improving the therapeutic effect of stem cell therapy.

  • Enhancing the Reliability of Protection Scheme for PV Integrated Microgrid by Discriminating between Array Faults and Symmetrical Line Faults using Sparse Auto Encoder

    摘要: The ever increasing power demand and the stress on reducing carbon footprint have paved the way for widespread use of PV integrated microgrid. However, the development of a reliable protection scheme for PV integrated microgrid is challenging because of the similar voltage-current profile of PV array faults and symmetrical line faults. Conventional protection schemes based on pre-defined threshold setting are not able to distinguish between PV array and symmetrical faults, and hence fail to provide separate controlling actions for the two cases. In this regard, a protection scheme based on sparse auto-encoder and deep neural network (SAE-DNN) approach has been proposed to discriminate between array faults and symmetrical line faults in addition to performing the tasks of mode detection, fault detection, classification and section identification. The voltage and current signals retrieved from relaying buses are converted into grayscale image dataset, which is fed as input to the SAE to perform the unsupervised feature learning. The performance of proposed scheme has been evaluated through reliability analysis and compared with ANN, SVM and DT based techniques under both islanding and grid-connected mode of the microgrid. The scheme has been also validated for field applications by performing real-time simulations on OPAL-RT digital simulator.

  • Protective effect of RIPK1-inhibitory compound in in vivo models for retinal degenerative disease

    摘要: Receptor interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1) plays a key role in necroptosis, which is a type of programmed necrosis that is involved in ocular diseases, including glaucoma and dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We previously introduced RIPK1-inhibitory compound (RIC), which has biochemical characteristics and a mode of action that are distinct from those of the prototype RIPK1 inhibitor necrostatin-1. The intraperitoneal administration of RIC exerts a protective effect on retinal ganglion cells against a glaucomatous insult. In this study, we examined the protective effect of RIC on retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) against sodium iodate (SI) insult, which is associated with dry AMD pathogenesis. The eye drop administration of RIC that reached on the retina prevented RPE loss in SI-induced retinal degeneration. RIC consistently demonstrated retinal protection in the funduscopy and electroretinogram analyses in SI-injected rabbits and iodoacetic acid-treated mini-pigs. Moreover, the in vivo protective effects of RIC were superior to those of ACU-4429 and doxycycline, which are other medications investigated in clinical trials for the treatment of dry AMD, and RIC did not induce retinal toxicity following topical administration in rats. Collectively, RIC displayed excellent retinal penetration and prevented retinal degeneration in the pathogenesis of dry AMD with a high in vivo efficacy.

  • Assessment of image quality and exposure parameters of an intraoral portable X rays device

    摘要: Objective: To evaluate the exposure parameters, radiation protection, absorbed dose and radiographic image quality of the DIOX? intraoral portable radiography device. Materials and methods: The exposure parameters were measured using the Xi UNFORS detector. Operator exposure to secondary radiation was measured using the 1800cc ionization chamber coupled to the electrometer. The absorbed dose (D) in the patient was calculated using TLD-100H positioned in the Alderson RANDO anthropomorphic simulator. The quality of the radiographic digital image was assessed by comparing radiographic images obtained from two convencional devices (CS 2200- Carestream Health?; Heliodent plus- Sirona Dental Systems GMbH?) with the radiological simulator of the upper molar region (RMI) (Radiation Measurements Instruments), using three acquisition sensors : Kodak RVG 5000? and Kodak PSP?, Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester, NY, USA; EVO Micro Image?, Brazil. Results: The DIOX intraoral portable radiographic device demonstrated reliability in relation to the performance of the standard evaluated parameters, except for the diameter of the radiation field (5.8mm) less or greater. No evidence of device head radiation was detected. The Pb lead protection of the apparatus attenuates the secondary radiation, thus protecting the operator. However, it was observed that the region of the operator’s gonads was the most exposed during the measurements. In the Alderson RANDO anthropomorphic simulator, the highest value of D was in the region corresponding to the submandibular and lingual glands of the left side (0.568mGy). The image quality of the DIOX portable radiographic apparatus presented quality standards equivalent to those produced by the two conventional radiographic devices. Conclusion: The DIOX? intraoral portable radiography device demonstrated reliability in relation to the quality control and radioprotection criteria, according to international standards. Results obtained demonstrated the safe use of the DIOX? intraoral portable radiography device and indicated the need for debate and change in international sanitary oversight standards regarding the use of portable XR devices in dentistry.

  • A dose monitoring system for dental radiography

    摘要: Purpose: The current study investigates the feasibility of a platform for a nationwide dose monitoring system for dental radiography. The essential elements for an unerring system are also assessed. Materials and Methods: An intraoral radiographic machine with 14 X-ray generators and five sensors, 45 panoramic radiographic machines, and 23 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) models used in Korean dental clinics were surveyed to investigate the type of dose report. A main server for storing the dose data from each radiographic machine was prepared. The dose report transfer pathways from the radiographic machine to the main sever were constructed. An effective dose calculation method was created based on the machine specifications and the exposure parameters of three intraoral radiographic machines, five panoramic radiographic machines, and four CBCTs. A viewing system was developed for both dentists and patients to view the calculated effective dose. Each procedure and the main server were integrated into one system. results: The dose data from each type of radiographic machine was successfully transferred to the main server and converted into an effective dose. The effective dose stored in the main server is automatically connected to a viewing program for dentist and patient access. conclusion: A patient radiation dose monitoring system is feasible for dental clinics. Future research in cooperation with clinicians, industry, and radiologists is needed to ensure format convertibility for an efficient dose monitoring system to monitor unexpected radiation dose.     摘要: Biometrics is commonly used in many automated verification systems offering several advantages over traditional verification methods. Since biometric features are associated with individuals, their leakage will violate individuals’ privacy, which can cause serious and continued problems as the biometric data from a person are irreplaceable. To protect the biometric data containing privacy information, a number of privacy-preserving biometric schemes (PPBSs) have been developed over the last decade, but they have various drawbacks. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of the existing PPBSs and give guidance for future privacy-preserving biometric research. In particular, we explain the functional mechanisms of popular PPBSs and present the state-of-the-art privacy-preserving biometric methods based on these mechanisms. Furthermore, we discuss the drawbacks of the existing PPBSs and point out the challenges and future research directions in PPBSs.

    摘要: Currently, self-healing is one of the most important functions in the smart grid. Meanwhile, fault detection, isolation, and restoration of feeder automation systems dominate the self-healing function in power distribution systems. The steps of the aforementioned function depend on the fault ?ag status of the feeder terminal unit. The conditions for setting this ?ag are judged by the feeder terminal unit overcurrent detecting curve. This paper found an ef?cient approach to calculate this curve via a half-interval method. Versatile application software with the curve plotting capability was also developed and deployed on the web server of the information-management department of Taiwan Power Company and is running successfully.

    摘要: This paper deals with those measures against overvoltage taken when protecting buildings occupied by people or animals. Such overvoltages can appear in the case of ground fault if the grounding system of the building is located within a potential funnel of a transmission tower's grounding system. This paper presents an entire concept regarding protection against any potential rise within the building. Computations of electrical potential on the grounding system having been performed using data obtained by measurements. This includes equipotential bonding, overvoltage protection of the building, and a transformer substation with metal–oxide varistors and gas-discharge arresters installed on the low-voltage line. A simulation model for the entire overvoltage protection based on known mathematical models has been merged within this paper. Adequate overvoltage protection elements were selected for protection against potential rises in the grounding systems of buildings on the basis of computation results.

    摘要: This paper presents a novel security architecture for protecting the integrity of iris images and templates using watermarking and visual cryptography (VC). The proposed scheme offers a complete protection framework for the iris biometrics which consists of two stages: the first stage is for iris image protection, while the second is for the iris template. First, for protecting the iris image, a watermark text which carries personal information is embedded in the middle band frequency region of the iris image using a novel watermarking algorithm that randomly interchanges multiple middle band pairs of the discrete cosine transform. Second, for iris template protection, the binary iris template is divided into two shares using VC, where one share is stored in the database and the other is kept with the user on a smart card. In addition, the SHA-2 hash function is utilized to maintain the integrity of the stored iris template in both the database and smart card. The experimental and comparison results on the CASIA V4 and UBIRIS V1 iris databases demonstrate that the proposed framework preserves the privacy of the iris images and templates and retains robustness to malicious attacks, while it does not have a discernible effect on the recognition performance.
