  • Polarization-controlled and single-transverse-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with eye-shaped oxide aperture

    摘要: We presented a single-transverse-mode and single-polarization vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) with an eye-shaped oxide aperture, obtained by enhanced anisotropic oxidation of oxide layer. For apertures with dimensions of 2 ' 4.6 and 3 ' 6 μm2, the orthogonal polarization suppression ratio (OPSR) of the VCSEL was 22 and 19 dB, respectively. A single-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of more than 25 dB at an output power of 0.5 mW was also achieved for the VCSEL with aperture dimension of 2 ' 4.6 μm2. We believe that the proposed method to realize the mode and polarization control of VCSELs has great potential in future applications. ? 2018 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

  • Sub-milliampere-threshold continuous wave operation of GaN-based vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with lateral optical confinement by curved mirror

    摘要: The continuous wave operation of a gallium-nitride-based vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (GaN-based VCSEL) that uses boron ion implantation for lateral current confinement and a curved mirror for lateral optical confinement was investigated. The threshold current was 0.25 mA (Jth = 3.5 kA cm?2) for a 3 μm diameter current aperture at room temperature and the lasing wavelength was 445.3 nm. This is the lowest threshold current recorded for a GaN-based VCSEL. This result is considered to be a milestone for the further miniaturization of GaN-based VCSELs by the implementation of lateral optical confinement due to the incorporation of a curved mirror.

    摘要: In this paper, we propose a novel ARROW VCSEL structure with an antiresonant oxide island placed inside the resonant cavity with the use of planar oxidation technique. The oxidized island does not only improve single-mode emission, which is one of the most desired effects in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), but also has a strong impact on modal loss associated with each lateral mode and affects the shape of their profiles. In this work, we investigate the physical basis of this impact and show how the dimensions of oxidized island determine optical properties of the ARROW VCSEL, leading to the strongest modal discrimination.

  • Surface plasmon resonance on blue GaN-based VCSEL with Al-grating

    摘要: Based on the research of surface plasmon (SP) applied to Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSEL), we proposed a new 465 nm GaN-based VCSEL to enhance illumination by deposit Al rectangular grating onto p-i-n layer. Meanwhile, an increase in the e?ective radiated power was obtained by the control of a surface plasmon mode, which depends strongly on the structural parameters such as material, period, depth and dipole location. Compared to conventional structure, we have a 30% improvement in e?ective radiated power. Such advantages make surface Al-grating be an alternative low-cost and simple technique used in SP-coupled VCSEL for the blue range.

  • High spatial resolution identification of hematoma in inhomogeneous head phantom using broadband fNIR system

    摘要: This paper presents a novel method for early detection of hematomas using highly sensitive optical fNIR imaging methods based on broadband photon migration. The NIR experimental measurements of inhomogeneous multi-layer phantoms representing human head are compared to 3D numerical modeling over broadband frequencies of 30–1000 MHz. A finite element method (FEM) simulation of the head phantom are compared to measurements of insertion loss and phase using custom-designed broadband free space optical transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) modules that are developed for photon migration at wavelengths of 670 nm, 795 nm, 850 nm, though results of 670 nm are discussed here. Standard error is used to compute error between 3D FEM modeling and experimental measurements by fitting experimental data to the a√frequency + b . Error results are shown at narrowband and broadband frequency modulation in order to have confidence in 3D numerical modeling. A novel method is established here to identify presence of hematoma based on first and second derivatives of changes in insertion loss and phase (?IL and ?IP), where frequency modulated photons sensitive to different sizes of hematoma is identified for wavelength of 670 nm. The high accuracy of this comparison provides confidence in optical bio-imaging and its eventual application to TBI detection.

  • Error correction for short-range optical interconnect using COTS transceivers

    摘要: Nowadays, quantities of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) optical transceivers are widely equipped in both exiting and abuilding data centers. As data centers are becoming larger and containing more servers, the method to ensure longer and steady transmission with COTS optical transceivers becomes one of the key issues. Meanwhile, variations in the manufacturing of COTS optical transceivers bring in fluctuation of packet error rate (PER) in communication. In this paper, we present an application layer adaptive forward error correction (AL-AFEC) coding scheme for COTS optical transceivers in optical interconnect to solve the problems mentioned above and test its performance in a 10 Gbps Ethernet (10GbE) link using 10GBASE-SR SFP+ modules. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme enables longer transmission distance and the instability introduced by manufactural variations is well settled. Since our scheme requires no extra hardware on optical transceivers, it is a considerable low-cost alternative to improve system reliability and achieve longer transmission distance for COTS optical transceivers.

    摘要: We experimentally demonstrated both 400G multi-mode (MM) and single-mode (SM) optical engines based on Silicon interposer to hybrid integrate laser dice, optics, and fiber arrays. The interposer realized by Silicon bulk micro-machining makes the engine very compact and easily assembled by the built-in Silicon precision. Clear optical eyes with TDECQ of 1.7dB and of 2.7 dB are obtained for 50Gb/s VCSEL in MM optical engine and 100Gb/s EML in SM one, respectively.

  • Novel optical biosensor method to identify human blood types using free space frequency modulated wave of NIR photon technology

    摘要: Background: The free-space broadband frequency-modulated near-infrared (NIR) photon transmission and backscattering mode technique has been used in this paper as an optical biosensor method. Purpose: The purpose is to measure, identify, and extract the optical properties of different blood types. Patients and methods: The method depends on the measurements of broadband frequencies ranging from 30 up to 1,000 MHz to predict two important parameters related to the incident-modulated signal. Blind samples collected from 30 patients were examined using the optical NIR transmission mode system, and an additional 40 blood samples from random patients were examined using the optical NIR reflection mode system. The study is divided into two stages: The first stage is dedicated to measuring the insertion loss and insertion phase over 30–1,000 MHz in a transmission mode to characterize the behavior of modulated photons as they interact with the blood samples. The second stage is dedicated to performing noninvasive backscattering measurements using the optical band developed to match the first stage results. Results: In this paper, we have created an indexed database using optical transmission mode measurements, and then mapped it to a reflection noninvasive measurement to identify the blood types. Then for the purpose of device accuracy, we randomly selected 480 new human subjects to measure the false-negative error percentage. This method is novel in terms of using an optical system to measure and identify blood types without collecting blood samples. Conclusion: The novel approach shows a highly accurate method in identifying different blood types instantaneously using optical sensing for both in vitro and in vivo procedures, thereby saving time and effort.

  • Experimental Study of Multistability in a Multimode Vertical-Cavity Laser

    摘要: The coexistence of various spatial distributions of laser intensity in a multimode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) at ? xed DC values was experimentally demonstrated. Their structures were characterized by different integrated intensities, polarization states, and sets of wavelengths. Spatial multistability was shown to lead to the appearance of multistability in the laser intensity and polarization multistability and was characterized by a strong local dependence of the laser intensity hysteresis behavior on the pump current. The effect of the diode-laser temperature on the manifestation of multistability was also investigated.
