  • Vancomycin functionalized WO3 thin film-based impedance sensor for efficient capture and highly selective detection of Gram-positive bacteria

    摘要: In this study, we report a facile, reusable, and highly sensitive label-free impedance sensor for discriminating Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The impedance sensor was fabricated using gold interdigitated electrodes onto a tungsten oxide thin film. X-Ray diffraction confirmed the formation of polycrystalline tungsten oxide. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy revealed that tungsten oxide has a porous structure. Tungsten oxide was functionalized with vancomycin, a glycopeptide antibiotic known to have a specific interaction with the peptidoglycan layer of Gram-positive bacteria. fourier transform infrared microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were employed to test the morphological coating of vancomycin on interdigitated electrodes/ tungsten oxide sensor. The functionalized tungsten oxide sensor was highly efficient in the capture of Gram-positive bacteria. The impedance measurement was also sensitive to differentiate between viable and non-viable Gram-positive bacteria. Limit of detection 102 colony forming unit/ml, linear dynamic range 102 - 107 colony forming unit/ml under physiological conditions and reusable nature of this vancomycin coated impedance sensor provide a label-free strategy for quick, sensitive and highly selective detection of Gram-positive bacteria.

  • Near-Infrared, Light-Triggered, On-Demand Anti-inflammatories and Antibiotics Release by Graphene Oxide/Elecrospun PCL Patch for Wound Healing

    摘要: Very recently, significant attention has been focused on the adsorption and cell adhesion properties of graphene oxide (GO), because it is expected to allow high drug loading and controlled drug release, as well as the promotion of cell adhesion and proliferation. This is particularly interesting in the promotion of wound healing, where antibiotics and anti-inflammatories should be locally released for a prolonged time to allow fibroblast proliferation. Here, we designed an implantable patch consisting of poly(caprolactone) electrospun covered with GO, henceforth named GO–PCL, endowed with high ibuprofen (5.85 mg cm?2) loading, used as anti-inflammatory and antibiotic models respectively, and capable of responding to near infrared (NIR)-light stimuli in order to promptly release the payload on-demand beyond three days. Furthermore, we demonstrated the GO is able to promote fibroblast adhesion, a key characteristic to potentially provide wound healing in vivo.

  • Efficacy of a novel ultraviolet light-emitting diode device for decontamination of shared pens in a health care setting

    摘要: Shared pens and styluses are a potential source for transmission of health care?associated pathogens and respiratory viruses in health care facilities. A novel ultraviolet light-emitting diode device was effective in reducing bacteria and viruses inoculated on pens and in reducing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus transferred to pens by colonized patients. The device could be useful in reducing the risk of transmission of pathogens by shared writing utensils.
