  • Ultrashort waveguide tapers based on Luneburg lens

    摘要: In integrated photonic circuits, silicon-on-insulator waveguides with different geometries have been employed to realize a variety of components. Therefore, efficient coupling of two different waveguides is crucial. In this paper, focusing property of the Luneburg lens is exploited to design waveguide tapers. The Luneburg lens, truncated in a shape of a parabolic taper with reduced footprint, is utilized to connect a 10 μm-wide waveguide to a 0.5 μm one with the same thickness with an average coupling loss of 0.35 dB in the entire O, E, S, C, L, and U bands of optical communications. The proposed compact taper with the length of 11 μm is implemented by varying the thickness of the guiding layer and compared with three conventional tapers with the same length. However, designing a coupler to connect waveguides with different thicknesses and widths is more challenging. By applying quasi-conformal transformation optics, we flatten the Luneburg lens and consequently increase the refractive index on the flattened side. As a result, we are able to couple two waveguides with different thicknesses and widths. The numerical simulations are used to evaluate the theoretically designed tapers. To our knowledge, this is the first study presenting ultrashort tapers based on truncated Luneburg lens.

  • Direct Chip-to-Waveguide Transition Realized with Wire Bonding for 140 GHz to 220 GHz G-Band

    摘要: This work presents a method to realize a direct chip-to-waveguide transition by means of commercial wire-bonding tools. A straight E-field probe is formed by a freely suspended bondwire and mounted to a standard RF pad on-chip. In contrast to conventional approaches, no additional dedicated substrate or large integrated radiating structure are necessary. A preliminary analysis is performed to illustrate the basic feasibility and a WR-05 prototype module, with dedicated test chip, is designed and optimized for a frequency range of 140 GHz to 220 GHz (G-Band). The measured return loss of a back-to-back configuration is above 10 dB, while the deembedded absolute loss of a single transition is between 0.4 dB and 1 dB, both within the complete waveguide bandwidth of 80 GHz. The demonstrated performance is very well suited to ultra-wideband communication systems or general-purpose mm-wave components.

  • Femtosecond laser additive and subtractive micro-processing: enabling a high-channel-density silica interposer for multicore fibre to silicon-photonic packaging

    摘要: Great strides have been made over the past decade to establish femtosecond lasers in advanced manufacturing systems for enabling new forms of non-contact processing of transparent materials. Research advances have shown that a myriad of additive and subtractive techniques is now possible for flexible 2D and 3D structuring of such materials with micro- and nano-scale precision. In this paper, these techniques have been refined and scaled up to demonstrate the potential for 3D writing of high-density optical packaging components, specifically addressing the major bottleneck for efficiently connecting optical fibres to silicon photonic (SiP) processors for use in telecom and data centres. An 84-channel fused silica interposer was introduced for high-density edge coupling of multicore fibres (MCFs) to a SiP chip. Femtosecond laser irradiation followed by chemical etching (FLICE) was further harnessed to open alignment sockets, permitting rapid assembly with precise locking of MCF positions for efficient coupling to laser written optical waveguides in the interposer. A 3D waveguide fanout design provided an attractive balancing of low losses, mode-matching, high channel density, compact footprint, and low crosstalk. The 3D additive and subtractive processes thus demonstrated the potential for higher scale integration and rapid photonic assembly and packaging of micro-optic components for telecom interconnects, with possible broader applications in integrated biophotonic chips or micro-displays.

    摘要: This paper presents a substrate integrated waveguide Butler matrix with a modi?ed hybrid coupler, operating from 28 to 32 GHz. The modi?ed hybrid coupler is realized by using 90? hybrid coupler followed by a ?45? compensating phase shifter. Thus, 45?/135? output phase differences can be obtained using this type of coupler. Compared with the equal-length unequal-width phase shifter, the compensating phase shifter exhibits better phase characteristics, with only 3? phase error over 28–32 GHz. Because the phase of compensating phase shifter is not realized by taking the phase introduced by the crossover as a reference, it gives great ?exibility to the design of compensating phase shifter. Adopting the modi?ed hybrid coupler, the designed Butler matrix features the output phases with peak to peak error of 13? and wideband performance from 28 to 32 GHz. The slot array fed by the Butler matrix can radiate four slanted beams with acceptable measured gains, in the range of 9.7~12 dBi for port 1 excitation and 8.4~11.1 dBi for port 2 excitation. The radiated beams can reach a wide azimuthal coverage between ±61?.

  • Circularly Polarized SIW DRA Fed by Ridge Gap Waveguide for 60??GHz Communications

    摘要: A compact planar dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is designed based on the sub-strate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology for 60? GHz communications. The pro-posed? antenna is constructed from a multilayered dielectric substrate separated by metallic sheets. A dog-bone shaped DRA is formed by perforating the upper dielectric sub-strate?with air holes surrounding the dog-bone structure. The DRA?is surrounded by metal-lic vies connecting two metal sheets above and below the substrate containing the?DRA. The DRA is fed through a slot coupled microstrip?transmission line?printed below the slot. The ridge-gap waveguide technology?(RGW) is used in the feeding layer to suppress the surface wave?surrounding the microstrip transmission line and improve the peak gain. The RGW?unit-cell structure has stop-band of 46–95?GHz. The SIW DRA introduces imped-ance bandwidth from 59.4 to 60.4?GHz (1.67% referenced to 60 GHz)?with peak gain of 6.78 dBi. The circular polarization (CP) is achieved by the rotation of the dog-bone shaped DRA by 45°?with respect to the feeding slot. It produces left-hand CP with a bandwidth of 0.22?GHz?(0.36%). A 2 × 1 SIW-DRA elements are designed with sequential rotation and phases for CP bandwidth enhancement. The peak gain increases to 9.1?dBi, and a broad-band AR of 4.8?GHz (8%) is achieved. 2 × 2 SIW-DRA elements with 90° orientation rota-tion angle and phases of 0, 90°, 180°, and 270° are designed. An improvement in the peak gain of 11?dBi is produced with wide AR bandwidth of 10.8?GHz?(18% from 54.2 GHz to 65?GHz) for 60?GHz communications.

  • Electronically controlled beam steering leaky wave antenna in nematic liquid crystal technology

    摘要: A novel nematic liquid crystal (LC) technology-based electronically controlled leaky wave antenna (LWA) with microstrip-waveguide conversion working mechanism and wide beam steering range is presented in this article. The LWA is a combination of an inverted microstrip structure and rectangular waveguide. According to the characteristics of LC materials in microwave band, a broadband microstrip-waveguide conversion device is proposed. The gradient slot leaky wave structure is combined with the microstrip-waveguide conversion device to form an electronically controlled LWA with continuous tunable beam. Simulation and experiment results show that the LWA proposed in this article has a 32° beam scanning range at 12 GHz and good impedance matching and stable gain, suggesting the great potential of nematic LC materials for extensive applications in microwave band in the future.

    摘要: In this paper, an integrated substrate gap waveguide (ISGW) bandpass filter is proposed. The filter consists of three layers of dielectric substrates, base layer, middle layer and top layer. The base layer is used to obtain substrate an integrated waveguide (SIW) filter, the middle layer is a substrate gap layer which is used for a gap layer between the top and base layer, and the top layer is used to obtain perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) layer. An ISGW filter is designed to validate the concept. The filter has a fractional bandwidth of 32.2% and two transmission zeros at 14 and 22.8 GHz, and wide passband, wide stopband and high selectivity of the passband are achieved.

  • Review on plasmon induced transparency based on metal-dielectric-metal waveguides; ??o?o? MDM ?3¢?ˉ?????-??|??-????èˉ±?ˉ?é??????????????è?°;

    摘要: Plasmon induced transparency (PIT) in the transparent window provides new insights into the design of optical filters, switches and storage, and integrated optics. The slow light effect makes PIT applicable to both sensors and slow light devices. Besides, PIT can overcome the diffraction limit of light, which makes it possible to manipulate light on a half-wavelength scale and brings good news to the miniaturization of optical devices. In this paper, we first summarize the researches of PIT phenomenon based on metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) waveguide systems and analyze the physical mechanisms of PIT including bright-dark mode interactions and phase-coupling-induced transparency. Then, we review the applications of PIT in optical sensing, optical filtering, optical switching, slow light devices and optical logic devices. At last, we outline important challenges that need to be addressed, provide corresponding solutions and predict important directions for future research in this area.

  • DUAL-BAND CIRCULAR POLARIZED SLOT ARRAY ANTENNA IN SUBSTRATE INTEGRATED WAVEGUIDE USING TWO PROPAGATION MODES FOR COMMUNICATION SATELLITES TRANSCEIVERS

    摘要: A novel dual-band circularly-polarized slot array antenna aimed at LEO satellites communications where up-link and down-link operate at di?erent frequencies is introduced. By using higher order modes, the slots can be placed at points where current distributions are null for the fundamental mode. According to this idea, at the receiver frequency band the slots are placed to be excited by mode T E10 currents distribution, and at the transmitting band slots are forced to radiate according to mode T E20 currents distribution. A matching load termination is used to generate the required travelling wave to obtain the circular polarization, introducing low dissipation losses. Additionally, in this investigation an antenna feeder is also designed. Both the feeder and the slot antenna array are designed using Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW). The use of SIW makes easier the design of the transitions from the array to the microstrip input lines and the grounded-coplanar termination as well, relaxing fabrication constraints and tolerance.
