  • Fast global orbit feedback system in PLS-II

    摘要: The transverse position of the electron beam in the Pohang Light Source-II is stabilized by the global orbit feedback system. A slow orbit feedback system has been operating at 2 Hz, and a fast orbit feedback (FOFB) system at 813 Hz was installed recently. This FOFB system consists of 96 electron-beam-position monitors, 48 horizontal fast correctors, 48 vertical fast correctors and Versa Module Europa bus control system. We present the design and implementation of the FOFB system and its test result. Simulation analysis is presented and future improvements are suggested.

    摘要: At the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) X-ray free-electron laser, a laser “heater” is used to generate an uncorrelated 20-keV energy spread on an electron beam to suppress the microbunching instability in downstream bunch compressors. Here we describe an alternative approach using emittance partitioning, where the increase in energy spread is generated by moving phase space volume from the transverse dimensions into the longitudinal dimension. For LCLS-relevant beam parameters, about a factor of six reduction in the product of both transverse emittances is feasible with the same amount of induced energy spread, with additional improvements possible with an optimized setup.

  • Dephasingless Laser Wakefield Acceleration

    摘要: Laser wakefield accelerators (LWFAs) produce extremely high gradients enabling compact accelerators and radiation sources but face design limitations, such as dephasing, occurring when trapped electrons outrun the accelerating phase of the wakefield. Here we combine spherical aberration with a novel cylindrically symmetric echelon optic to spatiotemporally structure an ultrashort, high-intensity laser pulse that can overcome dephasing by propagating at any velocity over any distance. The ponderomotive force of the spatiotemporally shaped pulse can drive a wakefield with a phase velocity equal to the speed of light in vacuum, preventing trapped electrons from outrunning the wake. Simulations in the linear regime and scaling laws in the bubble regime illustrate that this dephasingless LWFA can accelerate electrons to high energies in much shorter distances than a traditional LWFA—a single 4.5 m stage can accelerate electrons to TeV energies without the need for guiding structures.

  • Operation and performance of the JUNGFRAU photon detector during first FEL and synchrotron experiments

    摘要: JUNGFRAU is a hybrid pixel photon detector developed at the Paul Scherrer Institut for free electron laser (FEL) and synchrotron applications. A charge integrating detector, JUNGFRAU features three automatically switching gains per pixel which adjust the amplification factor to the amount of deposited charge. This enables single photon sensitivity, while ensuring a dynamic range over four orders of magnitude. Each detector module consists of eight 256 × 256 pixel ASICs bump-bonded to a single 320 μm thick silicon sensor, resulting in half a million pixels of 75 μm pitch arranged in 1024 × 512 arrays for a sensitive area of approximately 8 × 4 cm2. Modules can be combined in various configurations to produce larger systems. These proceedings present the required steps, both operational and in terms of data processing, necessary to perform experiments with the JUNGFRAU detector. This includes the calculation and application of pedestal and gain corrections and the geometric arrangement of the recorded image. Examples of these techniques in action will be presented from the first experiments performed with JUNGFRAU detectors; the pilot experiment of the SwissFEL Bernina beamline and proof-of-principle macromolecular crystallography measurements from the X06SA beamline of the Swiss Light Source. Successful operation and data processing methods from FEL and synchrotron facilities will be compared and contrasted, and experience of overcoming challenges in the two scenarios will be shared. Finally, the capability of JUNGFRAU for FEL and synchrotron applications will be demonstrated.

    摘要: An innovative double-sided tubular linear induction motor is presented, and its optimal design in terms of thrust force is discussed. A dedicated semi-analytical model of the device is developed allowing for fast and accurate evaluation of all the electromechanic quantities in the device, including the thrust force, back-electromotive force, distribution of the induced current, and average magnetic flux density in the teeth. This provides a basis for the design optimization, which has been performed by a novel evolutionary algorithm based on the self-organizing maps. Using the semi-analytical formulation, the characterization of the machine is greatly facilitated, thus allowing a fast evaluation of the cost function and design constraints. Finally, the obtained optimal design is validated by comparison with finite elements method analysis.

  • Hard X Rays from Laser-Wakefield Accelerators in Density Tailored Plasmas

    摘要: Betatron x-ray sources from laser-plasma accelerators reproduce the principle of a synchrotron at the millimeter scale. They combine compactness, femtosecond pulse duration, broadband spectrum, and micron source size. However, when produced with terawatt class femtosecond lasers, their energy and flux are not sufficient to compete with synchrotron sources, thus limiting their dissemination and its possible applications. Here we present a simple method to enhance the energy and the flux of betatron sources without increasing the laser energy. The orbits of the relativistic electrons emitting the radiation were controlled using density tailored plasmas so that the energetic efficiency of the betatron source is increased by more than one order of magnitude.

  • Tilted Snowplow Ponderomotive Electron Acceleration With Spatio-Temporally Shaped Ultrafast Laser Pulses

    摘要: We propose a novel scheme for using the ponderomotive force of a tilted ultrafast laser pulse to accelerate electrons in free space. The tilt of the intensity envelope results from the angular dispersion of the pulse’s spectrum and slows down the interaction of the pulse with free electrons. The slower effective pulse velocity allows time for the electrons to accelerate from rest while remaining on the wave. We present both non-relativistic and relativistic analytic single-particle models in the adiabatic ponderomotive approximation, describing the process for an ideal infinite tilted pulse as well as a finite width beam. The analysis predicts the threshold intensity as a function of the pulse front tilt angle and shows that in the ideal case the output energy of the electrons is four times that of the ponderomotive potential at the capture threshold. Full-field simulations using the 2D OSIRIS 4.0 particle-in-cell code confirm the basic scheme. This tilted pulse acceleration scheme shows promise as a lab-scale method of accelerating electrons to the MeV level with good energy and angular resolution, to be used for ultrafast electron diffraction or injection into a second stage accelerator.
