Refractive Index Measurement of Lithium Ion Battery Electrolyte with Etched Surface Cladding Waveguide Bragg Gratings and Cell Electrode State Monitoring by Optical Strain Sensors
摘要: In this scientific publication, a new sensor approach for status monitoring, such as state of charge and state of health, of lithium ion batteries by using special Bragg gratings inscribed into standard optical glass fibers is presented. In addition to well-known core gratings, embedded into the anode of 5 Ah lithium ion pouch cells as a strain monitoring unit, the manufacturing of a surface cladding waveguide Bragg grating sensor incorporated into the cell’s separator, that is sensitive to changes of the refractive index of the surrounding medium, is demonstrated. On the basis of the experiments carried out, characteristics of the cell behavior during standard cyclization and recognizable marks in subsequent post-mortem analyses of the cell components are shown. No negative influence on the cell performance due to the integrated sensors have been observed; however, the results show a clear correlation between fading cell capacity and changes of the interior optical signals. Additionally, with the novel photonic sensor, variations in the electrolyte characteristics are determinable as the refractive index of the solution changes at different molar compositions. Furthermore, with the manufactured battery cells, abuse tests by overcharging were conducted, and it was thereby demonstrated how internal battery sensors can derive additional information beyond conventional battery management systems to feasibly prevent catastrophic cell failures. The result of the research work is an early stage photonic sensor that combines chemical, mechanical and thermal information from inside the cell for an enhanced battery status analysis.

Effects of Platform Pre-Heating and Thermal-Treatment Strategies on Properties of AlSi10Mg Alloy Processed by Selective Laser Melting
摘要: The AlSi10Mg alloy was processed by selective laser melting using both hot- and cold-build platforms. The investigation was aimed at defining suitable platform pre-heating and post-process thermal treatment strategies, taking into consideration the peculiar microstructures generated. Microstructural analyses, differential scanning calorimetry, and high-resolution diffraction from synchrotron radiation, showed that in the cold platform as-built condition, the amount of supersaturated Si was higher than in hot platform samples. The best hardness and tensile performance were achieved upon direct aging from cold platform-printed alloys. The hot platform strategy led to a loss in the aging response, since the long processing times spent at high temperature induced a substantial overaging effect, already in the as-built samples. Finally, the standard T6 temper consisting of post-process solution annealing followed by artificial aging, resulted in higher ductility but lower mechanical strength.

Effect of ethanolamine passivation for ZnO nanoparticles in quantum dot light emitting diode structure
摘要: Aging effect of ZnO nanoparticles in quantum dot light-emitting diode (QD-LED) structure is studied. Coarsening of as-synthesized ZnO nanoparticles is observed in both solution and thin film structure, which potentially deteriorates device performance of QD-LED over time. Firstly, temperature effect on ZnO coarsening is investigated, and it reveals that ripening of ZnO nanoparticles is faster at higher temperature due to its diffusion controlled mechanism of nanoparticle coarsening. To observe aggregation of the ZnO in the film state, electron transporting part (ZnO/Al) of QD-LED structure was prepared. Current densities of the ZnO film and electron only device (QD/ZnO between two electrodes) are also measured. Resistance of the film increased as a function of aging time, which corresponds to optical microscopy observation of ZnO film. Aggregation of ZnO nanoparticles was directly measured by root-mean-square value in atomic force microscopy. Ethanolamine (EA) stabilizer is added in the ZnO solution to disperse the ZnO nanoparticles without aggregation. The effect of EA on the surface passivation of the ZnO was revealed by scanning electron micriscopy observation directly by suppressed pinhole formation. Finally, device lifetime was measured for QD-LED with EA stabilized ZnO to understand the effect of ZnO aging on long term QD-LED device operation.

Influence of aging on electrocaloric effect in Li+ doped BaTiO3 ceramics
摘要: Aging creates significant changes in the properties of the ferroelectric materials such as dielectric and piezoelectric properties. However, the influence of aging on the electrocaloric effect (ECE) has not yet been investigated. In this work, we investigate the effect of the aging on the ECE in acceptor (Li+) doped BaTiO3 ceramics. We observe that aging induced defect polarization (PD) reduces the saturation polarization of the doped samples until Tc=115 oC. Above that temperature PD loses its effectiveness and material behaves like a fresh sample. Suppression of polarization below TC due to aging effect results in a sharper slope change in the temperature dependence of electrical polarization in aged samples which causes an increase in the electrocaloric temperature change of Li+ doped BaTiO3 ceramics up to 23 % at TC. Above a critical Li doping amount, both negative and positive electrocaloric effect are observed in the same sample.

Eumelanin for Nature‐Inspired UV‐Absorption Enhancement of Plastics
摘要: In the human body, the black-brown biopigment eumelanin blocks the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In the plastics industry, additives are often added to polymers to increase their UV-absorption properties. We herein report an assessment of the biopigment eumelanin as a nature-inspired additive for plastics to enhance their UV-absorption. Since eumelanin is produced by natural sources and is non-toxic, it is an interesting candidate in the field of sustainable plastic additives. In this work, eumelanin-including films of commercial ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA), a plastic used for packaging applications, were obtained by melt-compounding and compression molding. The biopigment dispersion in the films was improved by means of the Melanin Free Acid treatment (MFA). It was observed that eumelanin amounts as low as 0.8% wt. cause an increase of the UV absorption, up to one order of magnitude in the UVA range. We also evaluated the effect of eumelanin on the thermal and photostability of the films: the biopigment proved to be double-edged, working both as UV-absorption enhancer and photo-prooxidant, as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy revealed.

Acceptance criteria for accelerated aging testing of silvered-glass mirrors for concentrated solar power technologies
摘要: Solar reflectors for Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) technologies are required to maintain their optical properties in demanding environments for more than 20 years of service-life. The durability of the commonly used silvered-glass reflectors is typically qualified by means of accelerated aging. Recently, the Spanish standardization committee UNE has published the first specific standard for this topic, which defines a set of accelerated aging tests for CSP reflectors. However, the standard does not contain pass/fail criteria. This paper proposes useful acceptance criteria for the accelerated tests defined by UNE, helping to interpret the obtained degradation results. The criteria have been determined by analyzing the collected accelerated aging data over the past 5 years in the OPAC laboratory, a joint research group of DLR and CIEMAT. Data from six different 4 mm silvered-glass manufacturers is presented, covering nearly the entire market of commercially available silvered-glass mirrors, and going way beyond the recommended testing times of the UNE standard. The data may be used to benchmark initial reflective properties (before aging) and the performance during accelerated durability testing. In addition, recommendations for improvements of the standard are given and an estimate of the acceleration factor of the Copper Accelerate Salt Spray (CASS) test with respect to a highly corrosive outdoor environment is presented.

Aging of a Vanadium Precursor Solution: Influencing Material Properties and Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation Performance of Solution-Processed BiVO <sub/>4</sub> Photoanodes
摘要: Metal–organic decomposition is an easy way to fabricate BiVO4 (BVO) photoanodes; however, it often experiences a reproducibility issue. Here, the aging duration of a vanadium precursor solution, vanadyl acetylacetonate in methanol, is identified as a factor that profoundly affects reproducibility. Substantial changes in structural, optical, and electrical properties of BVO films are observed upon varying aging time of vanadium precursor solutions, which subsequently impacts photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation and sulfite oxidation reactions. With the optimum number of aging days (3 d), some deficiency of oxygen is observed, which is accompanied by an increase in carrier concentration and a reduced charge transfer resistance in the PEC device, which produces the highest PEC performance that is comparable to the state-of-the-art undoped BVO photoanodes. The findings point to the importance of understanding solution chemistry and demonstrate that utilization of the understanding of fine adjustment of the composition of BVO films can produce highly reproducible and efficient BiVO4 photoanodes.

Time stability of carbon nanotube gas sensors
摘要: In this communication, we report on the long-term stability of a carbon nanotube (CNT) thin-film based NH3 gas sensor. These sensors were fabricated with a reproducible, large-scale, low-cost spray deposition process and are examined in terms of NH3 sensitivity and long-term stability. The devices are measured directly after fabrication; 1-year and 4-years post fabrication while being stored in ambient conditions without further encapsulation. The retainment of up to 96% of response demonstrates the stability of such CNT-based devices. Hence, it solves a critical issue for stepping beyond the proof of concept stage. Not only can CNT-based gas sensors be utilized for years, but such sensors also do not require any special recalibration over the years.

Synthesis and characterization of a series of new green solar heat-reflective pigments: Cr-doped BiPO4 and its effect on the aging resistance of PMMA (Poly(methyl methacrylate))
摘要: A series of new green Cr-doped BiPO4 materials were synthesized by hydrothermal method and first used as solar heat-reflective pigments. XRD, FTIR, FE-SEM and HR-TEM analyses confirm that the phase structure was transformed from low-temperature monoclinic phase (LTMP) to hydrated hexagonal phase (HP), the particle size decreased and the morphology changed from irregular prism-shaped to rod-shaped, which all attributed to the incorporation of Cr3+ ions. Moreover, the valance of chromium ions was also confirmed by XPS. Color and ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV–Vis–NIR) analysis indicate that different hues of green were obtained in these solid solutions and they possessed high NIR reflectance (> 83%) and solar reflectance (> 86%) in total NIR region. Meanwhile, the reason of decrease in NIR reflectance of doped samples was also analyzed, which mainly due to the decrease of free carrier concentration. TG-DTA and corrosion resistance tests prove that these pigments have excellent thermal and chemical stability. Compared with pure PMMA and the existing reports on pigmented PMMA, the NIR reflectance of PMMA pigmented with Cr-doped BiPO4 pigments have been greatly improved and have good coloring performance. The NIR solar reflectance of PMMA colored with Bi0.85Cr0.15PO4 in shortwave NIR region reaches up to 77.83%, an increase of nearly 52%. Heat aging test shows that Cr-doped BiPO4 pigments significantly improve the aging resistance of PMMA. In conclusion, these pigments have potential to become plastic colorants to increase the NIR reflectance and aging resistance of plastics.

Flicker Sensitivity in Normal Aging—Monocular Tests of Retinal Function at Photopic and Mesopic Light Levels
摘要: PURPOSE. Aging can affect many aspects of visual performance. In general, the effects become more significant in those older than 40 to 50 years, with increased intersubject variability and stronger dependence on ambient illumination. This study aimed to establish how healthy aging of the retina affects the detection of 15-Hz flicker under photopic and mesopic lighting. METHODS. We investigated 71 participants aged 20 to 75 years. Thresholds were measured for detection of 15-Hz flicker at the fovea (0°) and at an eccentricity of 4° in each of the four quadrants. The background luminance ranged from 0.6 to 60 cd/m2 and pupil size was measured continuously. Participants were excluded if they had signs/history of ocular disease, substantial interocular differences in flicker thresholds, or were unable to detect 100% flicker modulation in the high mesopic range. RESULTS. Mesopic and photopic flicker thresholds were used to calculate an index, the health of the retina index, to determine the limits of flicker sensitivity in healthy aging. Log flicker thresholds changed bilinearly with age; they remained stable until 40 to 50 years, with a linear decline with increasing age. This bilinear pattern of the change in flicker thresholds with age is consistent across photopic and mesopic light levels. CONCLUSIONS. The health of the retina index captures the lowest threshold, usually obtained under photopic conditions, as well as the loss of flicker sensitivity with decreasing light level. The established limits of healthy aging may benefit from future studies in patients with ocular hypertension and/or glaucoma that are known to experience loss of flicker sensitivity.
