A Novel Combined Light-Based Treatment of Acne Vulgaris With 1,450-nm Diode Laser and 450-nm Blue Light
摘要: BACKGROUND Nonablative 1,450-nm diode laser (DL) and visible blue light (BL) have been effectively used for acne with superior safety pro?les. OBJECTIVE To evaluate synergistic effects of sequential DL and BL application for acne. METHODS A 20-week, randomized split-face study was conducted to compare clinical courses between 2 facial sides either receiving sequential application of DL and BL or BL alone in 24 patients with mild to moderate facial acne vulgaris. Patients were scheduled to receive 3 consecutive sessions at 4-week intervals. Objective assessments, including revised Leeds grades, lesion counts, and sebum output measurements, and patients’ subjective satisfaction were investigated. RESULTS Both combination and BL sides demonstrated steady improvement of in?ammatory acne lesions with 62.3% and 35.2% decreases at the 12-week follow-up visit compared with baseline respectively. For nonin?ammatory lesions and seborrhea, only combination regimen demonstrated improvement. Patients’ subjective assessments paralleled objective ?ndings. For safety pro?les, no severe adverse effect was observed on both sides, and mild symptoms resolved spontaneously within a day. CONCLUSION The combination regimen demonstrated synergistic ef?cacies for acne and seborrhea, with satisfactory safety pro?les. Therefore, a few sessions of these light-based applications would be a viable option for acne treatments.

Antifungal Effect of Blue LED Irradiation on the Blue Mold, <i>Penicillium italicum</i>, in Satsuma Mandarin Fruits
摘要: The antifungal effect of blue LED (light emitting diode: maximum emission wavelength 465 nm, 80 μmol?m-2?s-1) irradiation on the blue mold, Penicillium italicum, in satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.) fruits after harvesting was investigated. Blue LED irradiation for 6 days after inoculation with Penicillium italicum significantly reduced symptom development in the fruits compared to that observed with dark treatment. The sporulation and mycelium area were markedly reduced by blue LED irradiation. On the other hand, blue LED irradiation for 6 days before inoculation reduced symptom development when the inoculum dose was low. Blue LED irradiation did not affect the fruit quality, except for the citric acid concentration and moisture loss. These results indicate that blue light irradiation could directly inhibit fungal growth in satsuma mandarin fruits and induce an antifungal response against the blue mold.

Photoinduced Antibacterial Activity of the Essential Oils from Eugenia brasiliensis Lam and Piper mosenii C. DC. by Blue Led Light
摘要: The objective of this work was to evaluate the phytochemical composition and the antibacterial and antibiotic-modulating activities of the essential oils of Eugenia brasiliensis Lam (OEEb) and Piper mosenii C. DC (OEPm) singly or in association with blue LED (Light-emitting diode) light. The antibacterial and antibiotic-modulatory activities of the essential oils on the activity of aminoglycosides were evaluated to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC, μg/mL) in the presence or absence of exposure to blue LED light. The chemical analysis showed α-pinene and bicyclogermacrene as major constituents of OEPm, whereas α-muurolol was the main compound of OEEb. Both OEEb and OEPm showed MIC ≥ 512 μg/mL against the strains under study. However, the association of these oils with the blue LED light enhanced the action of the aminoglycosides amikacin and gentamicin. In conclusion, the association of aminoglycosides with the blue LED light and essential oils was effective against resistant bacteria.

Red/blue light ratio strongly affects steady-state photosynthesis, but hardly affects photosynthetic induction, in tomato ( <i>Solanum lycopersicum</i> )
摘要: Plants are often subjected to rapidly alternating light intensity and quality. While both short- and long-term changes in red and blue light affect leaf photosynthesis, their impact on dynamic photosynthesis is not well documented. It was tested how dynamic and steady-state photosynthetic traits were affected by red/blue ratios, either during growth or during measurements, in tomato leaves. Four red/blue ratios were used: monochromatic red (R100), monochromatic blue (B100), a red/blue light ratio of 9:1 (R90B10) and a red/blue light ratio of 7:3 (R70B30). R100 grown leaves showed decreased photosynthetic capacity (maximum rates of light-saturated photosynthesis, carboxylation, electron transport and triose phosphate use), leaf thickness and nitrogen concentrations. Acclimation to various red/blue ratios had limited effects on photosynthetic induction in dark-adapted leaves. B100 grown leaves had a ~15% larger initial NPQ transient than the other treatments, which may be beneficial for photoprotection under fluctuating light. B100 grown leaves also showed faster stomatal closure when exposed to low light intensity, which likely resulted from smaller stomata and higher stomatal density. When measured under different red/blue ratios, stomatal opening rate and photosynthetic induction rate were hardly accelerated by increased fractions of blue light in both growth chamber-grown leaves and greenhouse-grown leaves. However, steady-state photosynthesis rate 30 min after photosynthetic induction was strongly reduced in leaves exposed to B100 during the measurement. We conclude that varying red/blue light ratios during growth and measurement strongly affects steady-state photosynthesis, but has limited effects on photosynthetic induction rate.

Can routine outpatient follow-up of patients with bladder cancer be improved? A multicenter prospective observational assessment of blue light flexible cystoscopy and fulguration
摘要: The aim of this prospective cohort study was to determine the feasibility of incorporating blue light flexible cystoscopy (BLFC) and biopsy/fulguration into routine outpatient follow-up of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer patients. The study included patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) who were scheduled for routine follow-up. Hexaminolevulinate was instilled in the outpatient department, and the bladder was examined under white light and then with BLFC. Biopsies were taken from all suspicious lesions. Small tumors and suspicious lesions were fulgurated on site; patients with larger lesions were referred to the operating room for resection. The study included 69 patients, with a mean age of 70 years (range 33–89 years) and a mean duration since NMIBC diagnosis of 8 years. Most patients had high-grade cancer at initial diagnosis (52/69) and were at high risk of recurrence (48/69). Two patients per hour could be assessed using outpatient BLFC. Preparation and instillation of hexaminolevulinate took less than 10 minutes per patient, and patients had an additional waiting time of 45–60 minutes following instillation, while the hexaminolevulinate solution was retained in the bladder before examination. Eleven patients had histologically confirmed tumors that were identified using both white light flexible cystoscopy and BLFC. An additional three patients had tumors that were identified by BLFC only: two with Ta tumors and one with carcinoma in situ. Of the 14 patients with confirmed tumors, 11 could be managed on site with fulguration, whereas three were referred to the operating room. No adverse events attributable to BLFC were reported. Routine outpatient management of patients with NMIBC using BLFC and on-site biopsy/fulguration is feasible, despite the additional time required for hexaminolevulinate instillation, and appears to allow early detection of recurrent lesions, which can be fulgurated without the need for hospitalization.

Novel Protective Effects of Cistanche Tubulosa Extract Against Low-Luminance Blue Light-Induced Degenerative Retinopathy
摘要: Background/Aims: Blue light-emitting diode light (BLL)-induced phototoxicity plays an important role in ocular diseases and causes retinal degeneration and apoptosis in human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. Cistanche tubulosa extract (CTE) is a traditional Chinese medicine with many beneficial protective properties; however, few studies have examined the ocular protective roles of CTE. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms underlying the effects of CTE on BLL-induced apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. Methods: RPE cells were applied in the current in vitro study and cell viability was determined by an 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. Apoptosis-related protein expression was determined by western blot analysis and immunofluorescence staining. Brown Norway rats were used to examine exposure to commercially available BLL in vivo. Hematoxylin and eosin staining, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL), and western blot assays were used to examine retinal morphological deformation. Results: CTE significantly inhibited hydrogen peroxide-, tert-butyl hydroperoxide-, sodium azide-, and BLL-induced RPE damage. Further, CTE reduced the expression of apoptotic markers such as cleaved caspase-3 and TUNEL staining after BLL exposure by inactivating apoptotic pathways, as shown via immunofluorescent staining. In addition, CTE inhibited the BLL-induced phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase, extra signal-related kinases 1/2, and p38 in RPE cells. In vivo, the oral administration of CTE rescued 60-day periodic BLL exposure-induced decrements in retinal thickness and reduced the number of TUNEL-positive cells in the brown Norway rat model. Conclusion: CTE is a potential prophylactic agent against BLL-induced phototoxicity.

Surface grafting modification of titanium dioxide by silane coupler KH570 and its influences on the application of blue light curing ink
摘要: A series of reactive TiO2 pigments with olefinic double-bonds were prepared by grafting modification of silane coupler KH570 to be covalently anchored in the blue-light curing film, which improved the color fastness to crocking of the printed fabrics significantly. Effects of KH570 concentrations on particle size, surface wettability and dispersing stability of KH570-TiO2 pigments, photo-polymerization of KH570-TiO2 bule-light curing inks and tensile properties of curing films were investigated. Color fastness to crocking of KH570-TiO2 pigment on cotton fabric was explored. Results showed that compared to the native TiO2, all the properties of KH570-TiO2 improved. With the increases of KH570 concentrations, the grafting degrees of KH570-TiO2 had gradual increase. The surface hydrophobicity and dispersion stability of KH570-TiO2 pigments, photo-polymerization of KH570-TiO2 blue-light curing ink and tensile properties of curing films enhanced, especially those of 12KH570-TiO2~20KH570-TiO2 the best. Within the concentrations of KH570 12~20 wt %, the printed fabrics had dry/wet color fastness to crocking no less than 4 grades.

Wireless, battery-free, flexible, miniaturized dosimeters monitor exposure to solar radiation and to light for phototherapy
摘要: Exposure to electromagnetic radiation can have a profound impact on human health. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun causes skin cancer. Blue light affects the body’s circadian melatonin rhythm. At the same time, electromagnetic radiation in controlled quantities has beneficial use. UV light treats various inflammatory skin conditions, and blue light phototherapy is the standard of care for neonatal jaundice. Although quantitative measurements of exposure in these contexts are important, current systems have limited applicability outside of laboratories because of an unfavorable set of factors in bulk, weight, cost, and accuracy. We present optical metrology approaches, optoelectronic designs, and wireless modes of operation that serve as the basis for miniature, low-cost, and battery-free devices for precise dosimetry at multiple wavelengths. These platforms use a system on a chip with near-field communication functionality, a radio frequency antenna, photodiodes, supercapacitors, and a transistor to exploit a continuous accumulation mechanism for measurement. Experimental and computational studies of the individual components, the collective systems, and the performance parameters highlight the operating principles and design considerations. Evaluations on human participants monitored solar UV exposure during outdoor activities, captured instantaneous and cumulative exposure during blue light phototherapy in neonatal intensive care units, and tracked light illumination for seasonal affective disorder phototherapy. Versatile applications of this dosimetry platform provide means for consumers and medical providers to modulate light exposure across the electromagnetic spectrum in a way that can both reduce risks in the context of excessive exposure and optimize benefits in the context of phototherapy.

Comparison of Intraocular Straylight in Patients with Clear and Photochromic Intraocular Lenses
摘要: Purpose: To compare visual acuity and intraocular straylight after implantation of clear and photochromic intraocular lenses (IOLs) in a mesopic lighting condition. Methods: Clear IOLs were implanted in 95 eyes of 72 patients (clear IOL group), and photochromic IOLs were implanted in 22 eyes of 16 patients (photochromic IOL group). Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was measured indoors before surgery and 1 month after surgery. Straylight values were measured indoors before surgery and 1 and 2 months after surgery using the C-quant straylight meter (Oculus GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany). Results: There were no significant differences between the 2 groups in BCVA at 1 month postoperatively (p = 0.587). Mean straylight values of clear and photochromic IOL groups were 2.76 ± 1.89 log (s) and 2.88 ± 2.04 log (s) preoperatively, 1.39 ± 0.84 log (s) and 1.32 ± 0.26 log (s) at 1 month postoperatively, and 1.43 ± 0.92 log (s) and 1.45 ± 0.50 log (s) at 2 months postoperatively. There were no significant differences between the 2 groups in indoor straylight values (p = 0.778, 0.709, 0.929, before surgery, 1 and 2 months after surgery respectively). Repeated-measure analysis of straylight values also showed no significant difference between the 2 groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions: There were no significant differences in BCVA and straylight values between clear and photochromic IOL groups under a mesopic light condition. Therefore, photochromic IOL could be suitable choice for cataract patients who spend significant time under mesopic conditions.
