  • Evaluation of solar factor using spectral analysis for CdTe photovoltaic glazing

    摘要: Solar and luminous light transmission control using Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) based PV glazing systems (15cm × 15 cm × 0.6 cm) were evaluated in this work. Indoor spectral characterisation showed that average solar transmission for investigated three different CdTe glazing systems were 5.77% (CdTe1), 9.54% (CdTe2) and 12.34% (CdTe3). Spectral behaviour of reflections in the range of solar and visible wavelengths was similar for these three different transparent CdTe glazing. Near infrared (NIR) reflection was higher compared to luminous reflection after 1500 nm for all three glazing systems. Solar factor (SF) for CdTe1, CdTe2 and CdTe3 glazing were 0.23, 0.28, 0.26. CdTe3 is the best candidate for glazing application as it has 113% higher luminous transmission while SF only increases by 21% compared to CdTe1.

  • Nickel Selenide Nanoparticles as a Cheap Alternative for Pt-Counter Electrode in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

    摘要: Colloidal nickel selenide nanocrystals (NCs) of two different compositions i.e., Ni3Se2 and Ni3Se4, where one is Ni-rich while another is Se-rich are synthesized using the hot injection method by merely changing the injection and growth temperature while keeping the rest of the reaction conditions like solvent, ligands, amount of precursors and reaction time identical. These nanocrystals exhibit electrocatalytic activity in the reduction of triiodide (I?3) to iodide (3I?), therefore employed as counter electrodes (CE) in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The DSC based on nickel selenides displays an efficiency of 6.4%, comparable to the Pt-based cells prepared by us.

  • Design of an intermediate Bragg reflector within triple-junction solar cells for spectrum splitting applications

    摘要: We investigate the use of distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) within triple-junction solar cells (TJSC) for spectrum splitting photovoltaics. An optical model of a lattice-matched (LM) GaInP/GaInAs/Ge TJSC with intermediate DBR is developed, in good agreement with measured reflectance. By modifying the DBR layer number, composition and thickness to broaden the reflectance band, we show that a DBR can provide suitable 900–1050 nm reflectance for spectrum splitting from the LM TJSC to a Si cell, resulting in a more efficient 4-junction receiver. For better practicality and cost effectiveness, we propose that the buffer layers in metamorphic (MM) TJSCs could additionally function as a DBR for spectrum splitting applications. We propose several DBR designs to achieve a suitable spectrum-splitting reflectance band from MM TJSCs to a Si cell, again resulting in a more efficient 4-junction receiver. Finally, we show that our intermediate DBR approach to spectrum splitting has the advantage of a greatly reduced angle-of-incidence dependence compared to a discrete dielectric filter.

Optical models for both commercial lattice-matched (LM) and metamorphic (MM) GaInP/GaInAs/Ge triple-junction solar cells (TJSCs) are developed, in good agreement with measured reflectance. Integrating a suitable DBR structure into a TJSC has the potential to provide the required IR reflectance for spectrum splitting from the LM and MM TJSC to a Si cell. We show that the intermediate DBR approach to spectrum splitting has the advantage of a greatly reduced angle-of-incidence dependence compared to a discrete dielectric filter.

    摘要: T-lymphocytes are the principle coordinators of the immune defense system and play a major role in the protection of our body against infections, intruders of non-self, and malignancies. To mount an immune response, T-cells need to be effectively employed to tissue sites of infection or in?ammation and establish contacts with antigen-presenting cells (APCs) or malignant cells. Understanding how T-cells navigate toward their recruitment sites would offer new therapeutic opportunities. Advancement in the hardware and software upgrades of microscopy technology has created several ef?cient and easy-to-operate live cell imaging platforms. In this protocol, we present a generalized and simple-to-follow protocol for live cell imaging of migrating T-cells, which can also be adopted to visualize real-time tracking of intracellular signaling events.

    摘要: This paper presents a method for the determination of optimal curing conditions for the imaging of single lung cancer cells by atomic force acoustic microscope (AFAM). The cellular morphology, height and surface roughness of the cells treated with different concentrations of paraformaldehyde and methanol and durations were observed using an AFAM. The experimental results showed that the A549 cells solidified with 4% paraformaldehyde for the period from 30min to 60min were close to the profiles of living cells. The cells solidified with 4% paraformaldehyde for 10min were beneficial to obtain subsurface structures.

  • Inspecting human colon adenocarcinoma cell lines by using terahertz time-domain reflection spectroscopy

    摘要: Techniques to inspect and analyze human colorectal cancer cell lines by using terahertz time-domain attenuated total reflection spectroscopy (THz TD-ATR) were investigated. The characteristics of THz absorption spectra of two colorectal cancer cell lines DLD-1 and HT-29 in aqueous solutions with different concentrations were studied. Different spectral features were observed compared to normal cell line. Identification results based on different parameters including absorption coefficient, refractive index, real and imaginary parts of complex permittivity, dielectric loss tangent were discussed. This research may be promising for quick and instant inspection of liquid samples by using THz time-domain spectroscopy in medical applications.

  • Survival and functionality of xeno-free human embryonic stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelial cells on polyester substrate after transplantation in rabbits

    摘要: Purpose: To study immunogenic properties of human embryonic stem cell–derived retinal pigment epithelium (hESC-RPE) and to evaluate subretinal xenotransplantation of hESC-RPE on porous polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in rabbits. Methods: Human ESC-RPE cells were characterized by morphology, transepithelial electrical resistance (TER), protein expression and photoreceptor outer segment phagocytosis in vitro. Expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) proteins was assessed in conventionally or xeno-free produced hESC-RPE with interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) stimulation (n = 1). Xeno-free hESC-RPE on PET with TER < 200 Ω·cm2 or PET alone were transplanted into 18 rabbits with short-term triamcinolone with extended tacrolimus immunosuppression. Rabbits were monitored by spectral domain optical coherence tomography. After 4 weeks, the eyes were processed for histology and transmission electron microscopy. Results: Upon in vitro IFN-γ stimulation, xeno-free hESC-RPE expressed lower level of MHC-II proteins compared to the conventional cells. Outer nuclear layer (ONL) atrophy was observed over the graft in most cases 4 weeks post-transplantation. In 3/4 animals with high TER hESC-RPE, but only in 1/3 animals with low TER hESC-RPE, ONL atrophy was observed already within 1 week. Retinal cell infiltrations were more frequent in animals with high TER hESC-RPE. However, the difference was not statistically significant. In three animals, preservation of ONL was observed. Weekly intravitreal tacrolimus did not affect ONL preservation. In all animals, hESC-RPE cells survived for 4 weeks, but without tacrolimus, enlarged vacuoles accumulated in hESC-RPE (n = 1). Conclusions: Xenografted xeno-free hESC-RPE monolayers can survive and retain some functionality for 4 weeks following short-term immunosuppression. The preliminary findings of this study suggest that further investigations to improve transplantation success of hESC-RPE xenografts in rabbits should be addressed especially toward the roles of hESC-RPE maturation stage and extended intravitreal immunosuppression.

  • Visualize Embryogenesis and Cell Fate Using Fluorescent Probes with Aggregation-Induced Emission

    摘要: Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and fluorogen-dextran conjugate are tracers extensively used for injection-based lineage tracing. However, HRP is sensitive to proteolytic digestion while the high-molecular-weight dextran may have antigenicity. Small molecular tracers can overcome these problems, but they usually diffuse from labeled cells, causing inaccurate information. Herein, we developed a small-molecular-weight fluorogen with aggregation-induced emission (AIEgen) for embryonic cell tracing with strong signals against tracer dilution caused by cell division. Once injected into the ancestor cells, the AIEgen can be entrapped in the cells without leakage because of the two hydrophilic and neutral arms. Consequently, it can specifically trace the progenies of the treated ancestor cells. More importantly, the operating concentration of AIEgen can be much higher than those of fluorogens with aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ), which provides bright signals in daughter cells during embryonic cell tracing, thus overcoming the problem of fast signal degrading typically encountered with the use of traditional cell tracers.

  • Real-time profiling Anti-EpCAM Based Immune capture, from Molecules to Cells using MP-SPR

    摘要: Antibodies of epithelial cell-adhesion-molecule (anti-EpCAM)-based interfaces have proven to be highly efficient at capturing circulating tumor cells (CTCs). To achieve the bonding of anti-EpCAM to the interface, biotin and streptavidin are used to modify the surface. These processes are critical to subsequent cell-capture efficiencies. However, quantitative research on the interactions between biotin, streptavidin and biotinylated anti-EpCAM on the interface is lacking. In this work, the thermodynamics and kinetics of biomolecular interactions were determined by using surface plasmon resonance. The equilibrium binding affinities for biotinylated anti-EpCAM to streptavidin and streptavidin to biotin (illustrated by biotin-PEG400-thiol) were found to be 2.75×10^6 M^-1 and 8.82×10^6 M^-1, respectively. Each streptavidin can bind up to 2.30 biotinylated anti-EpCAM under thermodynamic equilibrium. The findings provide useful information to optimize the modification of anti-EpCAM and improve the capture efficiency of CTCs.
