  • Photon-photon interactions in dynamically coupled cavities

    摘要: We study theoretically the interaction between two photons in a nonlinear cavity. The photons are absorbed into the cavity by an effective tuning of its input-output coupling via external control of a coupling to a second, strongly output-coupled cavity mode. Such “dynamically coupled” cavities, which can be implemented using bulk χ (2) and χ (3) nonlinearities, enable incoming photon wave packets to be absorbed into the cavity with high ?delity when the duration of the control is similar to that of the wave packets. Further, this con?guration can be used to avoid limitations in the photon-photon interaction time set by the delay-bandwidth product of passive cavities and enables the elimination of wave-packet distortions caused by dispersive cavity transmission and re?ection. We consider three kinds of nonlinearities, two arising from χ (2) and χ (3) materials and one due to an interaction with a two-level emitter. To analyze the input and output of few-photon wave packets, we use a Schr?dinger-picture formalism in which traveling-wave ?elds are discretized into in?nitesimal time bins. We suggest that dynamically coupled cavities provide a very useful tool for improving the performance of quantum devices relying on cavity-enhanced light-matter interactions such as single-photon sources and atomlike quantum memories with photon interfaces. As an example, we present simulation results showing that high-?delity two-qubit entangling gates may be constructed using any of the considered nonlinear interactions.

  • Spontaneous phase symmetry breaking in a gas coupled-cavity ring laser

    摘要: A theoretical model is proposed that describes the lasing dynamics in a gas ring laser (GRL) with coupled cavities. The conditions are found under which spontaneous phase symmetry of counterpropagating waves is broken in the GRL with an antiphase optical coupling of the cavities. It is shown that in the case of spontaneous phase symmetry breaking, two branches appear on the GRL frequency characteristic. In some region of frequency non-reciprocity of a ring cavity, both branches can exist under the same conditions. In this case, radiation bistability appears in the GRL, and hysteresis phenomena can be observed.

  • Frequency characteristics of a gas coupled-cavity ring laser

    摘要: Based on a theoretical model describing the lasing dynamics in a gas ring laser (GRL) with coupled cavities, we have investigated the frequency characteristics of radiation. The conditions are found under which an increase in the scale factor is the largest. The regime of frequency locking of counterpropagating waves is studied. It is shown that the lock-in region in a GRL with an antiphase optical coupling of the cavities remains the same as without an additional cavity. The conditions are determined under which multistability of the radiation characteristics arises in a coupled-cavity GRL. In the numerical solution of the equations of the considered theoretical model, three branches of the frequency response are found.

  • Passive synthesis rules of coupled-cavity quantum cascade lasers

    摘要: A new approach to passive electromagnetic modelling of coupled–cavity quantum cascade lasers is presented in this paper. One of challenges in the rigorous analysis of such eigenvalue problem is its large size as compared to wavelength and a high quality factor, which prompts for substantial computational efforts. For those reasons, it is proposed in this paper to consider such a coupled-cavity Fabry-Perot resonant structure with partially transparent mirrors as a two-port network, which can be considered as a deterministic problem. Thanks to such a novel approach, passive analysis of an electrically long laser can be split into a cascade of relatively short sections having low quality factor, thus, substantially speeding up rigorous electromagnetic analysis of the whole quantum cascade laser. The proposed method allows to determine unequivocally resonant frequencies of the structure and the corresponding spectrum of a threshold gain. Eventually, the proposed method is used to elaborate basic synthesis rules of coupled–cavity quantum cascade lasers.

  • Single coupled cavity filter design with dielectric resonators posts for millimeter‐wave applications

    摘要: In this work, a single coupled cavity has presented for millimeter-wave applications. The cavity is modeled to study the effect on the quality factor by adding cylindrical posts to coupled cavity resonator. This cavity model demonstrates a higher quality factor result and better performance compare to empty substrate integrated waveguide (ESIW) filter. The concept of enhancing the quality factor by adding posts is achieved. Based on this concept, the coupled cavity and bandpass filter are presented to show the feasibility of the fabrication process for building an ESIW filter where cylindrical posts is placed in middle on the planar substrate. The introduced cavity offers very good performance around (1%) fractal bandwidth at 24.7 GHz center frequency with Q-factor of 2236. A cavity prototype is fabricated and measured where measurements agree well with simulation.
