    摘要: This paper proposes, for the ?rst time, an optically lossless light emitting diode (LED) bandwidth extension technique based on the adoption of negative impedance converters applied in the context of high capacity visible light communication systems. The proposed technique aims to achieve bandwidth extension by offsetting the bandwidth-limiting effect of the LED diffusion capacitance through the introduction of a parallel negative capacitance. With the proposed technique, we predict up to 200% improvement in the LED modulation bandwidth with studies based on a veri?ed LED equivalent model.

    摘要: Harmonic stability problems caused by the resonance of high-order ?lters in power electronic systems are ever increasing. The use of passive damping does provide a robust solution to address these issues, but at the price of reduced ef?ciency due to the presence of additional passive components. Hence, a new method is proposed in this paper to optimally design the passive damping circuit for the LCL ?lters and LCL with multituned LC traps. In short, the optimization problem reduces to the proper choice of the multisplit capacitors or inductors in the high-order ?lter. Compared to existing design procedures, the proposed method simpli?es the iterative design of the overall ?lter while ensuring the minimum resonance peak with a lower damping capacitor and a lower rated resistor. It is shown that there is only one optimal value of the damping resistor or quality factor to achieve a minimum ?lter resonance. The passive ?lters are designed, built, and validated both analytically and experimentally for veri?cation.

  • Solar Engineering of Thermal Processes, Photovoltaics and Wind || Design of Photovoltaic Systems

    摘要: This chapter is an anomaly in that the processes it treats are not primarily thermal in nature. However, the equations that are encountered in design of many photovoltaic (PV) systems are very similar to those describing passive heating processes, and design methods based on utilizability concepts have been developed that are analogous to those in Chapter 22 for passive heating. Radiation calculations developed for thermal processes are directly applicable to PV converters. This chapter includes a brief description of PV converters (solar cells), models that describe their electrical and thermal characteristics, a short treatment of models of batteries and other components in the systems, and notes on applications. These serve as introductions to the design method and to comments on simulation of PV systems.

    摘要: This paper presents the topology, modelling and control strategy for a single-phase grid-connected converter for photovoltaic (PV) applications based on the series-resonant dual active bridge (DAB). A state-space large-signal model is derived for phase-shift based modulations, and a linearized model is presented for control design. A multi-loop control strategy is presented where a current-control loop regulates the current that the converter injects in-phase with the grid voltage, while a slower loop regulates the PV array voltage for MPPT. To verify the model and control strategy, simulation and experimental results are presented.

    摘要: Large power transformers (LPTs) have been a major concern of the electric power sector as a failure of a single unit can lead to temporary service interruption and utility damages. Replacement of such large and heavy transformer units is a challenging job as LPTs are custom-designed and hence entail long lead times due to its intricate manufacturing process and transportation. On the other hand, solid-state-transformer (SST) technology has evolved as an alternate option for the conventional line-frequency transformers, which offers comparatively reduced size and weight with the enhanced power quality features. With the advancement in wide-bandgap devices such as silicon carbide (SiC) and advanced power electronic converters, SSTs are able to deploy in medium voltage applications. Consequently, the utilization of SiC-SSTs for large power applications can mitigate some of the existing concerns of LPTs. In this paper, challenges and concerns associated with the existing LPTs are discussed. Possible SST modules/cells enabled by SiC devices, which can be connected in a modular structure to achieve multi-cell flexible large power SSTs (FLP-SST) are presented. The effectiveness of the discussed SST cells is validated using appropriate simulations and experimental results of the scaled SST prototypes.

    摘要: Design approaches for power electronics are typically focused on efficiency and power density; however, these strategies do not guarantee cost optimality in any well-defined sense. To overcome this shortcoming, we propose a design framework that yields circuit parameters that minimize the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of a generation system. LCOE serves as a meaningful metric since it captures total lifetime costs — including hardware, balance of system, and maintenance costs — and includes the impacts of power conversion efficiency and revenue from harvested energy. To obtain a tractable design problem, we formulate an approximate LCOE improvement model that quantifies the changes in LCOE resulting from a candidate converter design. We apply this framework to a multilevel cascaded topology for low-voltage dc to medium-voltage ac conversion without line-frequency transformers. An example 200 kW commercial-scale system is studied and the solution yields a design with 15 cascaded stages, 98.01% efficiency, and an LCOE reduction of 2.0%.

  • Spectral converters for photovoltaics – What’s ahead

    摘要: The effective incorporation of photovoltaic (PV) elements into the urban environment, specifically in buildings, is a challenging process. Apart from the aesthetic limitations of having black and opaque PV cells when installed in building fa?ades, they are not optimally positioned for high-efficiency electric energy generation because of shadowing effects due to neighboring trees and buildings. Emphasis is given to luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) that have emerged as an appealing solution for concentrating a large area of sunlight into a small beam of high field intensity. The coupling of PV cells to the edges of LSCs also presents an exciting strategy to PV urban integration. Here, we outline the mechanistic framework for LSCs, review the current experimental state of the art involving optically active centers in various geometrical device configurations, and discuss the performance quantification of LSCs currently in development. For the sake of completeness, a brief discussion of the other spectral converters suitable for PV applications is also reported.

  • A Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithm for Photovoltaic Systems under Partially Shaded Conditions

    摘要: This paper shows a modification of the traditional ‘perturb and observe’ algorithm used to the maximum power point tracking in photovoltaic systems. The proposal is justified by the need of algorithms to track the global maximum power point in solar panels connected in series under partially shaded conditions. The proposal tracks the global maximum power point avoiding the previous iterative search in local maximums. The algorithm performance is evaluated by simulations in the software PSIM and its behavior is compared with the traditional perturb and observe algorithm. The results show the outstanding performance of the modified algorithm in the tracking of the global maximum power point under different non uniform conditions of temperature and irradiance in the solar array.

  • An overview of energy efficient solid state LED driver topologies

    摘要: LED lamps are projected as prospective successors of incandescent lamps with high efficiency and a long lifetime. Therefore, there is a need to develop energy efficient LED driver topologies for achieving constant current regulation, despite the effects of temperature on the LED V‐I characteristics. This paper presents the salient features of various LED driver topologies with a focus on power density, multi‐string operation, renewable energy utilization, soft switching, optical wireless communication, reliability and size. The performance of the above topologies is analysed in terms of the number of components, converter switching frequency, galvanic isolation, power rating and efficiency. This paper takes a look at efficiency improvement methods while dwelling on aspects of lifetime and reliability prediction of LED drivers. The paper will anticipate some of the future trends associated with the adaptation of wide bandgap power semiconductor materials, smart LED lighting for the internet of things (IoT) and programmable LED lamp drivers. This detailed technology review is extremely useful for researchers, designers and engineers in choosing the right topology.

  • Symmetric-component decoupled control of grid-connected inverters for voltage unbalance correction and harmonic compensation

    摘要: In this paper, a strategy is investigated for control of distributed generators to additionally support the local grid on top of conventional electricity generation. The strategy decouples unbalance and harmonic compensation in the phase sequences and the frequency domain for a grid-connected inverter with local unbalanced and distorting loads. Unlike conventional control schemes for grid-connected converters, the proposed strategy is designed to be sequence-asymmetric for the purpose of unbalanced and harmonic local voltage correction. A frequency-domain Norton equivalent model is derived to illustrate the working principle of the strategy. Accordingly, it is shown that following a frequency-domain decoupled method the fundamental positive-sequence, the harmonic symmetrical sequence, the fundamental zero-sequence and the fundamental negative-sequence components can be regulated independently. Consistent to the model analysis, experiments validate the reduction of the local voltage total harmonic distortion and unbalanced factor when the converter is programmed for both harmonic sinking and voltage unbalance correction.
